PapaBear Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Just about to start building a quarter scale Tiger Moth, got the scale drawings for xmas in process of ordering a load of balsa and spruce at the moment. This should keep me busy for a year or so. Quote
PropNut Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 hey PapaBear, I have some pretty good plans for the Tigermoth in 1/4 scale. How do you plan on joining the center wing section on the top wing? Quote
2. Administrators Jabo Posted January 6, 2012 2. Administrators Posted January 6, 2012 1/4 scale? Sweet Quote
PapaBear Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 Hi guys, yes Mayhem it will be R/C, in answer your question Propnut, as far as i can see after studying drawings for some time is the dummy fibreglass fuel tank is fitted to the main struts coming up from the fuselage and has a large steel rod ( 6swg ) protruding about an inch on both sides which line up with main spar on top wings and they plug into that, and two small nuts and bolts to hold each wing in place. Does not sound very stong but drawings advise the wing rigging is most important to integral strength of airframe. The lower wings are fitted to the fuselage much in the same way as full size just a few nuts and bolts. Quote
PropNut Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 That sounds similar to what I devised for the wing rigging on my 1/3rd scale Sopwith Triplane. I did, however, build the top wing in one piece for peace of mind. Good thing I had a trailer that would fit the 103" wing! Quote
PapaBear Posted January 7, 2012 Author Posted January 7, 2012 Wow Propnut thats big! what motor have you got up front ? Just looking at drawings again and it looks like there is a rear mounting rod that slides into rear spar the same as the front, this means the incidence will have to be built in spot on. Making a one piece wing for the top sounds like the way to go, its only 88" wing span that should just fit in my little van Quote
PropNut Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 I am using a Zenoah G-62, it flies it great but with limited vertical. Quote

PapaBear Posted January 8, 2012 Author Posted January 8, 2012 I am using a Zenoah G-62, it flies it great but with limited vertical. Thats a lot of aircraft to be pulling uphill. Quote

PropNut Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 The G-62 takes it off after only a very short rollout. It easily does all scale maneuvers and several not so scale, lol. But I have been flying with guys who seriously over power their planes so that was the comparison that I was making, lol. My 1/3rd scale is built light, at 34#. Quote
PapaBear Posted November 19, 2014 Author Posted November 19, 2014 Well at last here are some pics of the old moth under contruction, took ages to cut all 278 of the parts out. Could have purchased them lazer cut but decided to go the old fashioned route. 1 Quote
