Just a quick note to say 'thanks' to Fruitbat for giving up a couple of hours flying tonight to take me thru the tweaks necessary on my rig to get the highest gfx quality I've yet seen from the game.

Also if you've missed it I'd recommend taking a look at FB's repaint of Cannons Channel map. It's seriously good stuff and compatible with Dino's Channel missions.

No worries at all, glad to of been of help Jabo :thumbsu:

I can post the settings later, but they only really apply to running il2 at max settings, which his card and processor can do no problems.

I'm sort of fairly sure that my specs should be ok for a hammering:

Win 7 64

4 gig RAM

E6850 Dual Core running at 3000 ghz

1 x Nvidia 8800GTX running latest drivers at 1650 x 1080

An owner that will shout and swear at the computer loudly if it won't do as it's told

Without these dll's you will get jaggies on the coastlines with landgeometry=3 (which i use), however, if you use landgeometry=2 with these dll's, you will get jaggies on the coastlines :confused3: , so be careful.

these dll's were part of a pack of 5 that 1C release as beta 4.09 dll's.

There was some other stuff that i suggested to jabo, but that was all mod stuff.

Its quite possible that this setup can be improved on, there may well be settings in my openGL that can be improved, some of them i have no clue what they do, but this is all info i have gleaned from other forums.

Tried your settings Fruitbat, Performance was good, looked good, but my GTX260 showed them nasty pixel-by-pixel blocky thingy black-dotted-shadows-in-the-snow-stuff.... so went back to what I used to have in Conf.ini

Haven't looked into what flag is responsible for it though.. Oh well!

Hi FT, we have 4 differences in the conf.ini, and it was indeed polygonstipple that causes those shadows on the snow.

with polygonstipple turned off (ie 0) i don't have those shadows anymore, but don't have any shadow created by those smokes on the snow, do you??, on other maps i still have shadow, just seems to be in the snow.

also, i've noticed that you have your texmip filter is set at 3, (mines 2) and from my reading up on the conf.ini settings,

TexMipFilter

0=Bilinear (fastest)

1=Trilinear (Improves quality with little sacrifice in speed)

2=anisotrophic (Best quality but slower)

So what is 3?:huh:

You also have

TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=1 whereas mine is off, again from my reading this only needs to be enable if you have S3TC compression enabled, which you don't have.

The other difference we have is visibility distance, mines 3 vs your's is 2 (3 is the max and this setting is related to object distance).

Heres some info i found on polygonstipple at mission4today,

(5) Polygon Stipple

Polygon or Line stippling is the ability to create lines or polygons made up of dotted or dashed lines. This is done when you are looking at an object from a very closed angle or long distance. The polygon lines will be more or less stippled at certain angles so that they don't saturate the object making it a big messy blob.

When used in conjunction with AA it makes the lines look more smooth.

Look at the radio wiring from Me109 for example. At certain angles it almost disappears and when AA is on it looks much smoother.

and

I don't agree with described definition of Polygon Stipple. For me, the only effect is that smoke (of fires, of ships, dust behind tanks) has shadow which is made by checker-board pattern of black. Without 'Polygon stipple' smoke has no shadow.

That is correct as Polygon stipple creates a 32X32 stipple pattern of a checkerboard type. programmatically selecting whether to perform a stencil test on a per-pixel or a per-sample basis

The last quote seems to tally with my experience.

Your source is wrong there.

0= <empty> ??

1=Bi

2=Tri

3=Ani

I tried it, used IL2Setup to change from Ani to Bi, and the value changes from 3 to 1.

Could very well be right, could also be the reason why I do have shadows on smoke with Polygonstipple off.

Just to clarify, i get shadows on smoke on all maps i tried so far, except on snow, with polygonstipple off, are you sure you get smoke shadows on snow?

I do get smoke shadows on snow... I think. Will doublecheck...

As for setting visibilitydistance lower, it does prevent the massive drops (at 3 FPS dropped from 60 to 20, or 16, and at 2 from 60 to 50/48 or so) when looking at certain parts of the city.

All buildings popup much later though, so the initial results are very good, I'm still trying to find out what the price to pay is, visibility wise I mean... it's difficult to determine whether it shows less objects now, as in, you do not see those... :rolleyes:

EDIT, just tried the march ones, no difference.

what your nvidia settings? I'm very curious to find out whats causing this.
