After helping the Bird-dog to get RAIDed up and back on-line .... he gave me a 75Gig Raptor to go with the one I already have (cheers m8!)

Start looking here. What did you say the overclock was on your quad? Might explain your flightgear problems too B

I'm still not sure what us uptight Brits didn't do that would be considered normal in JP-land? Run about like headless chickens? Band together for a hearty rendition of "Nearer my god to thee"? Throw our sandwiches into the air? Please expound. Confused, of Teignmouth.

Asas, Please post the logfile that HijackThis creates after it scans your PC. Chances are, one of us may recognise what's going on and be able to bring a little clarity. PS. The sneakiest trojan I ever saw was one which infected my brother-in-law's rig a few years ago. He got it by clicking a link in an unsolicited e-mail and the only visible result was a new icon which appeared on his desktop.... SEX, it said, in large bold capitals, black on a bright yellow background - and like most married men might do he quickly deleted the offending sign. At which point all hell broke loose on his rig, which rebooted itself several times while various items were installed. These included a fake web browser, a keylogger, an e-mail redirection tool and literally dozens of entries all over the hard drive, rewriting various registry settings. The poor guy was almost in tears after several hours of attempts to clear the thing - principally because the only extant draft of his degree dissertation was in there. To cut a long story short, I managed to retrieve the document and his email addresses before formatting and wiping the drive. Then I installed the OS again and he started from scratch with a whole new attitude to web security. B

Did you try the utility "Hijack This" yet? Available HERE Just removing the virus file is not enough as it will have spread all over. Running Hijack this, and submitting the logfile will let experts find all the infection. Remember that Window's System Restore is NOT your friend in cases like this, as the virus will get stored there too. Anyway, HT will get the beast for you as long as you follow the instructions. B

Icon settings are changed by adding scripts to the .rcu file in the game's root folder. I use an application called Iconscript that gives me a choice of many different scripts. Here's a typical example: @set iconfdot 7 @set iconfrange 0.00.1 @set iconftype 0.00.1 @set iconfid 1 @set iconfname 0.00.1 @set iconfcolor 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------above the line is friendlies

The main problem here is the CPU. The 9500 doesn't easily overclock beyond 2.4GHz and , as the Perfesser says, Win 7 has a lot of background processes running and the game only uses one core. So the graphics performance is CPU-bound. A faster quad-core would give better results. There are some adjustments that could be done in conf.ini. Where did that come from? You can select a specific core to run the game on using this line - but the selection is limited to ProcessAffinityMask=0 or =1, =2, =3. I'm not sure what effect, if any, =15 would have? If you want to try balancing it across all cores replace the semi-colon at the beginning of the line - ;ProcessAffinityMask=0 At the moment I am using the =1 setting. I'll replace the ; later and see if it alters results. Secondly, I would consider switching Water=4 for a less demanding setting such as Water=2. I don't run nVidia, so I can't tell you how to set up the card, but I've seen a few reports of people struggling with the =4 setting @Perfesser Do you have a link to that, P? B

I'll take a look in the morning. You did say your card is a 9800GT?

On the odd occasion that the British have risen up against their Government (last time being the Poll Tax riots in 1990) the violence has been restricted to damage to public property, some arson, and some instances of looting. How it would have played out if the citizenry and the police had been armed doesn't bear thinking about. Just for the record the rising achieved its limited aims and more, leading both to the end of poll tax and the displacement of Margaret Thatcher from her role as PM. Armed insurrection was of course a key feature of the Irish situation with the Republican cause being supported and supplied by, among others, the Irish community of America. Before anyone flips out, I would like to say that there were many parts of the Republican cause which I sympathised with - the occupation of the six counties being a real survival of the Georgian policies that the Americans revolted against - but the slide into indiscriminate violence, the bombings, the knee-cappings, the roadside bombs, all those things were totally gratuitous and served no cause except the escalation of hatred on either side. It also served to show others how to fight an undeclared civil war, a situation that is demonstrated in the ongoing conflict between the West and Al Quaeda and the Taliban. To me, arming civilians is a risky business. The existence of legal guns means that most criminals have easy access to them too, ensures that the police have to be heavily armed as well, and allows all those horrific massacres to take place in schools, churches and wherever. I question whether that amount of 'collateral damage' is worth the notional option of 'armed revolution'? B

I'm loving my 4890. It's fast and quiet - needing only 40% fan speed to keep the GPU at sub-48C throughout long sessions of IL2. Overclocking has been easy too, with it now at 960/1050MHz for GPU and memory, and perfectly steady. B

That is so. They seem to have started this process already as I saw the Se5 is on sale now among others. I feel I should be celebrating, as I've wanted a good WW1 sim for years, but instead I'm annoyed that they didn't organise a link to PayPal before they launched the on-line store. It's all these little niggles that are holding me from picking up a copy - I'm going to wait until this phase is past. B

4.09 beta looks like it will be going gold soon.
DD_Brando replied to Blairgowrie's topic in Jim's Place
I haven't seen any confirmation of that, sged, only that it's built using IL2 models converted and updated by a separate firm called Gaijin. This company is not a subsidiary or partner of Oleg. Oleg Maddox' crew remains working on Storm of War. No parts of the new game-engine have been released at all. B -
Well, I have vertical refresh enabled to avoid seeing tearing of the cockpit bars when I swing my head around. This keeps my fps tied to the monitor's refresh rate, so it doesn't go over 65 or so. but the cool part is that my minimum has pretty much doubled. Here's a couple of examples. First the old Radeon x1950 Pro with the AMD x2 6000+ cpu: 2009-06-18 11:24:31 - il2fb Frames: 6147 - Time: 150000ms - Avg: 40.980 - Min: 19 - Max: 63 V-Synch is On, Perfect settings but with some details dumbed down in conf.ini - note the minimum 19 Second the 4890 with the x4 955: 2009-07-26 00:53:42 - il2fb Frames: 8407 - Time: 150000ms - Avg: 56.047 - Min: 32 - Max: 65 V-Synch is On, Perfect settings turned up all the way, very playable Finally, for the total FPS-monkey : 2009-07-26 00:47:38 - il2fb Frames: 12231 - Time: 150000ms - Avg: 81.540 - Min: 32 - Max: 189 V-Synch is Off. Perfect settings as above, but AA & AF have Use application settings checked. If you don't mind tearing this is is pretty wacky I flew some more Slovenia this a.m. (Jugs this time) I have clocked the 4890 out to 960MHz GPU/ 1050MHz Memory with manual fan control @ 45%. The CPU is clocked to 3.41GHz. The secondary monitor displayed PC Probe gauges for all temps and voltages, and the Catalyst "Ati Overdrive" page was open as well as the TS display. 6 live pilots. It flew smooth as silk. The CPU temp stayed solid at 35C. The GPU temp never exceeded 46C! For the first time I am confidently able to minimise the game and mess with settings, open browsers and so on, knowing that I'll be able to jump back into the game whenever I want to. TrackIR works like it should too, and with 'Smoothing' set to 100%. Marvellous. I still can't fly worth a damn - and now I've run out of excuses!

A couple of weeks ago I did a clumsy BIOS flash and rendered the motherboard on the gaming rig U/S I happened to mention it to my wife and she replied that I'd better just get a new one - and would £700 cover it?? As I picked myself up off the floor she explained that she knew what a big part of my life the internet is and that this was my birthday present I got busy and ordered up my bits from Overclockers: Asus Crosshair III mobo AMD Phenom II Quad-core 955 Black Edition Asus Radeon 4890 PC P&C 750W PSU 2x2Gb OCZ Reaper 1333MHz RAM Hiper Anubis mid-tower case It sure can take a while to assemble a PC one-handed! But I persevered and only needed help when it came to filling up the water-cooling system. That was yesterday, and I left the system overnight to make sure that there were no leaks. Today I completed the wiring and booted straight into Windows It took a while to get all the drivers sorted...and I still have to sort out the audio side of things....and recharge the batteries in my camera...but I can safely say that I'm up and running again. The postman brought today's other great news - Valda has passed her MSc with flying colours! Tonight we're gonna get drunk Yeeeeeeha!!!!

When I wrote "two weeks" earlier I guess I was being prophetic. My chum's rig is still on the desk at my four o'clock while he moves into his new flat, but I did manage to set up his monitor and reclaim my little Samsung Syncmaster. I set it up attached to my Ati x1950Pro yesterday, using the 'extended desktop' method. The 24" screen is set at 1900x1200x32 @ 60Hz, while the 15" is at 1024x768x16 @ 75Hz. The "big screen" is assigned as primary, No 1. I have dragged various items across to the secondary display that I consider useful while flying, including the Windows taskbar. The mouse cursor goes from one screen to the other, there are no issues with that. OK, on to the in-game performance. I have only had one instance of the "half screen" display that I mentioned before. It freaked me out a bit until I discovered the simple fix. Minimising the game using the Windows key seems to be the necessary action. I did that and got the minimised game onto the taskbar on the secondary monitor. (Alt+Tab doesn't work for me) Then I clicked on the minimised game and it restored to the full screen. As easy as that. In fact it seems that this arrangement has cured all my problems with minimising in & out of the game. When minimising to the primary (only) screen it would be touch and go as to restoring the game. With the taskbar moved to the secondary screen it now works every time. B

Yes, I agree with Jabo that the first place to check is the PSU, as it's the first item in the line to suffer from a power surge. The "instant-on" that you describe could be symptomatic of that. B
