  1. I dug out a photo of me engaged in my other favourite hobby ..... I wish I had two hands to be able to do the heavy side of maintenance, but I can ride as well as the next guy with just one. B
  2. The point about the availability of the Mk XII is correct.
  3. Now that is definitely a possibility! Well thought out, Perfesser. I would certainly test this by using voice-activation for a while. B
  4. Yeah, I know what you mean! BTW. It's the OBD sub-menu, not ODB - sorry for the goof. It stands for On-Board Devices. It's the best place to disable the system as, among other reasons, it won't be affected by using System Restore. When you reboot after disabling it, Windows will not 'see' the device and therefore will not load any drivers for it. B
  5. Here's a very complete article on the Intel High Definition Audio chipset on your board. It can be disabled through the BIOS Menu - it is on the ODB Configuration page, and is listed as the HDA Controller. B
  6. It's all about training isn't it? Or lack of it. I remember being trained with the Lee-Enfield Mk 4 in live firing. I can almost recite the sergeant's instructions.... "Pull the butt back into your shoulder...harder, lad, harder...and take a breath, sight, and squeeze the trigger, don't jerk it!"
  7. While playing about in a dogfight map over the weekend, myself and a few buddies discovered that the Spitfire XIV and the 262 are a good match. The result may often be inconclusive - as in, neither kills the other, but they are well-matched for that reason. A 262 flying Jabo with a full bomb-load, or climbing to attack a bomber stream, is vulnerable to a flight of XIVs that have the altitude advantage. More so than to a flight of P51s for example. The jet can out extend the Spit in a level chase or a gentle climb, but leaches power more quickly at higher climb-rates. It's inexperienced 262 pilot who tries b'n'z on the Griffon Spit. I look forward to jet co-ops. The flame-out issues are purely related to over-zealous use of the throttle and can be overcome with a little practice. 100% throttle is very rarely required in any of them; the P80, for example, will rotate very smoothly at no higher than 92% and can be flown constantly at that setting - though easing back to 80-85% is fine for fast cruise. Dropping right back to 65% will free you from the partly-burned fuel smoke trail that makes jets so detectable at medium range. Bring it on B
  8. Until I bought my present set of Creative headphones - which comes with a long enough cable to reach around the back of the 'puter - I used the speaker jack (green plug) for sound, and put an extension on the mic (purple) jack to reach the back of the case. So a male/ female mini-jack extension would be a cheap way to sort out a working solution. I agree with Grey Knight about the improvement that an Audigy 2 will bring over an on-board chip. Provided that your Audigy is the kind that has its own APU (Look HERE for info on which card you have) then you will experience a considerable improvement in sound quality. Give us a shout when it comes to installation issues. B
  9. I didn't get that? You mean ?It must be a coincidence, but that's what I think too. Weird stuff! (but don't quote me on that.) B
  10. Just wanted to see the new-style result Ummm? Well, not so bad for midday to London, with several browser windows open, I guess. ADSL is pretty slow, but no way as bad as dial-up or satellite. A good connection across the pond is all-important
  11. Rog, Quadrant refers to the shape of the housing, a quarter-circle, rather than the number of levers it contains. It could as easily house just one lever and still be a quadrant. B
  12. Trim is set by ascribing key presses to the appropriate controls in the Controls page of the game - or it can be done in the HOTAS section if you have sliders or rotary axes to spare. You'll need to remember that not all the aircraft have trim on all the axes of flight. The I-153 & the I-16 have none - the 109s have only elevator - the Spits and Hurris have elevator & rudder - the later US planes have elevator, rudder and aileron. They are all different and you'll get to know which has what as you get to fly them. What they do is alter the airflow over the principal surfaces of the plane. Taking the rudder as an example, they enable you to fly along a straight nose-to-tail line. If the rudder is not trimmed, either by direct rudder movements or by the use of trim tabs, you will find your plane 'skids' as you proceed on your course. 'Crabbing' is another term used to describe this kind of progress, as your plane still goes forwards but at an angle to the nose-tail axis, a bit like a crab's progress along the beach. This will slow you down, especially in a combat situation, and spoil your aim when you finally latch on to a target.
  13. Failure at 60% was the clue to which stick it was Could be, if the PSU was subjected to, or caused, a power spike. B
  14. Try the with 256Mb only first
  15. You will need to enter BIOS and set your CD as 1st boot device B
  16. I always used to find that blase attitude at DFI Street too, so maybe it's rubbed off on the company. The main problem seemed to relate to over-clocking, as in if you weren't over-clocking the bejasus out of your DFI mobo then you weren't worth a response. I found it very strange. Although I really enjoyed my Lan Party NF4 Ultra!SLI - the BS that went with it was all a bit harder to take. B
  17. One Sunday, sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a State Police Officer sees a car puttering along at 22 MPH. He thinks to himself, "This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!" So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over. Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies - two in the front seat and three in the back - wide eyed and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him, "Officer, I don't understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! I always go exactly the speed limit. What seems to be the problem?" "Ma'am," the officer replies, "you weren't speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers." "Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly! Twenty-two miles an hour!" the old woman says a bit proudly. The State Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that "22" was the route number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked the officer for pointing out her error. "But before I let you go, Ma'am, I have to ask . . . Is everyone in this car OK? These women seem awfully shaken and they haven't muttered a single peep this whole time," the officer asks with concern. "Oh, they'll be all right in a minute officer. We just got off Route 119." B
  18. Well, you were correct in a way Pook - in that the sight was offset in the cockpit of the 109, and the pilot did have to shift his head to use the sight. 6DOF does allow you to move your head to the sight, or hitting gun-sight view (defaultShift+F1) will center the sight in the sim. All a tad weird - but I guess it makes the game playable for 109 pilots! B
  19. I'm sympathetic to this, Rog. A good mate just came back from Spain and asked to look at his rig that wasn't booting, so I cleaned it up, cleared CMOS, installed Windows, updated, put a few utils on, scanned, tested, etc etc.
  20. I always preferred the designation in the film BoB "Red 2 to Red leader, yellow-nosed bastards at 12 o' clock high, coming down!" If you're wearing red white and blue roundels and they're sporting black crosses, precise nomenclature is not important
  21. Well, try it before you think of a BIOS flash - it may well be fine. Bearing in mind that the 'latest' BIOS probably dates from 2000, it may very well be there already. B Edit: Bios Issue Date:2000/07/06. That's the latest. Before you swap the CPUs - boot up and look at the initial screen. The BIOS date is written there.
