  1. Sadly, this is the first time there will be no veterans of the Great War at today's service in London. Gone but not forgotten. ~S~
  2. Why does this indicate a HDD fault? I would have thought (in my ignorance) that a fault related to memory would indicate a memory fault. Jabo
  3. Don't think so Glenn, you've more likely got a stick of memory on the way out. Quick way to check (this assumes you have four memory slots and all four have memory in) 1) Remove all the memory 2) Install 1 stick in slot 1 and boot the machine. If it boots or fails to boot, power down and move the stick to slot 2. Repeat until all four slots are tested 3) If it boots in some slots but not others, then the slots where the machine fails to boot are defective - time for a new mobo. 4) If the machine fails to boot at all with the stick in any of the slots, then you have a defective stick. Go back to step 2 and try the other sticks (you may have more than one faulty stick!) 5) If this doesn't throw up any errors at all, run memcheck from the UBCD on each stick in turn until you get a fault. If still no fault, clear the error log, and install a couple of new sticks of RAM (they're pretty cheap) and keep an eye on the error log to see if the problem returns. Jabo
  4. Don't forget, you've already got the weather booked Nick
  5. While you're about it, check out the gasman song, that's lol-worthy too.
  6. Lol, reminds me of the old Flanders and Swann song - "The Song of Patrotic Prejudice (The English, the Engllish, the English are best)" - I'd continue, but I'd be likely to offend quite a number of people. It's on YT though, if anyone needs to check. Jabo
  7. Splendid, that's good enough for me!
  8. Really? I run TIR with v-sync forced off via the nvidia control panel without problems... Jabo
  9. Possible, but not ideal IMO. A better bet is to stick your HDD into a different system, copy the data off onto an external drive and start from a fresh install, that way it doesn't matter what board/processor combo you go for, and you've got a backup for the future. Win 7 and IL2 is fine, there's no problems I've been able to find, and I'm getting the same fps with 7 (64 bit) as I was with XP (32 bit). Don't know about your h/w, but if it's supported by vista then 7 should have no problems. Jabo
  10. Me too FT, hence the h/w tests first.
  11. Yep, start with UBCD DT, check mem and HDD for errors. If you get no errors on the basic scans, run the intensive ones. If you get errors, get the offending components swapped out. You don't mention if your machine is under warranty, but even if not replacing the HDD and/or memory is not all that costly. If you don't get errors, back your important files up and reinstall windows. Make sure you have av installed before you go back on the web. DL the necessary drivers beforehand and stick them on your external HDD. The BIOS hang is worrying as that means the machine is not passing the POST (power on self-test). Try the things above, and if no better, flash the BIOS, and if issues still persist, I'd be looking at mainboard/CPU faults. Jabo
  12. Regrettably the hatchet job done on Dowding's reputation by the likes of Trafford Leigh-Mallory, Sholto Douglas and Douglas Bader after the Battle of Britain was over and Dowding was unceremoniously shunted off out of the way (to the dismay of the pilots of Fighter Command) has lasted to the present day. Dowding was the true architect of the survival of the RAF during the summer of 1941, but he was too outspoken and made too many enemies. I'm afraid there won't be a plinth JP. I'm afraid my views on the uses of the fourth plinth don't really bear repeating, but at last there's something there which should be there permanently. I understand that Keith Park's statue will be moving near to the RAF Chapel in London when his six months are up - might want to add that to your list of places to visit Jim and Pook. Jabo
  13. Spitfire? Grin. Which pub was that Jedi? You're not too far from me, might be worth an expedition. Jabo
  14. Much LOL, a really good ad campaign. Good?? Spitfire is a highly splendid ale. Available on tap at selected establishments in Kent (The Two Ducks and The White Hart in Canterbury spring to mind), bottles only elsewhere in the UK (not sure about overseas). Jedi's right though, happiness is a room temperature Spitfire... Jabo
  15. Sorry Smash m8, I have a requirement for my 'spare' DVDRW drive (building a new machine for the parents), so Pooka's option might be best for now. Jabo

    Oh the pain...

Well, this particular tale has run it's course as this morning a new 500GB drive turned up from ebuyer, and as I type I'm copying all the stuff from the 500GB external drive to the new internal one so I have two copies. Thanks to everyone for the support offered and provided. Jabo

    The beta looks really good.
  18. FT's right, we've not moved from 1.1 yet, so you need to keep it for now at least. I believe you can attach to a 1.1 server when you're running 1.2 locally if you disable Zuti's moving dogfight mod. I've not tested that so I could be spouting rubbish, but it's what I've heard. If you can and if it causes no problems for the host then you could remove 1.1 but I'd still advise against
  19. ROFL, the fat, gray falcon of Malta strikes again. ~S~ JP Jabo

That's very good news indeed - I'll check the diary. Jabo
  21. I heard this on the news last night too - I think somebody may be in for a rocket.

    Holy Crap!

My friend, you have nothing to complain about. I'm getting 66kbps downstream and 25kbps upstream - another reason why I won't be hosting anytime soon. Jabo
