Green Smoke and missing tree textures

« on: July 06, 2010, 05:01:36 AM »

When i ran my 4.09m version of IL-2, everything works normal. However, when i run UP 2.01 the smoke from the ship's smokestack is white, then turns green at the top, also certain ships where completely gray with no other color. So, i decided to run the UPUpdator, and it downloaded a bunch of stuff. Then when i go to run IL-2 again, the smoke is still green, ships are still gray. and now certain "more detailed" trees that are placed every now and then are now black blocks in roughly a tree outline. :angry2:

Any Help?

the square trees is a prob with /files/maps/_tex/trees/alteredbush9a i got the same thing and just put a - in front of the alteredbush9a name and they are ok now, as for the ships and smoke i didn't have that prob. maybe someone else has a more elegant solution for you. sorry i cant help more

I’ve gotten them as well. I just assumed that it was something to do with the mods. If you Smart Dogz figure out a solution, please let the rest of us know. :icon_farao:

I think that the blocky stuff is best corrected by dabbling in the conf.ini file

Here's an example for high-end ATI card users - make sure that Catalyst AI is Disabled in the CCC - and you are using latest drivers.

[Render_OpenGL]

TexQual=3

TexMipFilter=2 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< can be tried at 3

TexCompress=0 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< can be set at 2 if necessary

TexLarge=1

TexLandQual=3

TexLandLarge=1

VideoSetupId=17 (use the ID number already in your conf)

These settings have worked on-line for me for several years. A friend of mine is using them on a 3870 and anything above that should be good to go.

Any setting recommended for Nvida users?

what nvida card, high end, mid or low?

Can't remember the exact card, probably a mid to low, If I remember right I spent under $200.00 on it about a year, year and a half ago. Will be able to tell you exactly tonight when I get home.

OK, here are the basic details for the card.

NVIDIA GeForce 6200, 128 MB

Bios 5.43.02.66.00

1024 by 768 pixels

Color quality 32 bit

I used to run the game with an Nvidia 6600 for ages after having cards of lower spec than the 6000 series. It ran fine but I had to accept that it wouldn't be able to run at maximum settings, more like medium to get good frames per second and visuals.

The processor has a great effect on this game. What processor do you have?

Here are 6 things you could try to optimise your graphics:

1. Open your game folder, wherever it is, and create a new folder. Call it 'Backup' if you want. Move 3 files from the game folder into it, namely 'il2_core.dll' , 'il2_corep4_dll' and 'il2setup.ini'. Replace those with the ones attached at the bottom of this post. There are a selection of these to choose from but these run fine, they help with shimmering and similar issues and also allow you to select your card in the setup (later on!).

2. Go to the Nvidia website here and download the latest drivers for your card. You will have a few to select from but I would suggest going for the version 260.99 as I can't recommend any previous ones due to the age of the card - there are earlier driver versions but they all had their own issues and habits.....I seem to remember running ones from the 169 series a few years back. The driver installation can be fully automatic if you want, just select to uninstall the previous ones during the setup. Do whatever the setup asks. It also installs 2 other programmes - 'PhysX' and sound drivers. 'PhysX' is ok and you may wish to install and use the sound drivers although I don't, I'm using the computer onboard sound fine. Once done, reboot.

3. Go into the game folder, double-click on the game settings icon to open the settings user interface. Disable the 'Intro' if you want. Select 'OpenGL' on the 'Driver' tab , and then on the 'Video' tab select 'NVidia GeForce 6XXX..9XXX/FX/4/3'. This means that the game will set itself up on the video card settings that you can put in later. Set the sound tab settings low - you can crank them up later, just match the speakers to your setup. Set the network to '56k'. Close the interface.

4. Right click on your desktop and open the 'Nvidia Control Panel'. I suggest the following settings, the others can remain default:

Ambient Occlusion - N/A

Anisotropic filtering - Application controlled

Antialiasing Gamma - On

Antialiasing Mode - Override....'

Antialiasing Setting - 4x

Antialiasing Transparency - Multisampling

Multi display.... - Single display performance mode

Texture filter anisotropic sample - off

Texture filter negative LOD bias - clamp

Texture filter quality - quality

Texture filter trilinear optimisation - off

Threaded optimisation - off

Triple buffering - on

Texture filtering - anisotropic.... - off

Vertical sync - application controlled

Click 'Apply' and close

5. Start the game. On the main page go into 'Hardware Setup'

Video Mode - Check you are using 'OpenGL' and that your resolution is correct. Try ' Attempt Stencil Buffer' on.

Video options - Select 'Simple' and select 'Excellent'. You may want to change this later and drop down the cloud and landscape settings. Trial and error, see how it runs but it is very unlikely that you will run 'Perfect' settings.

Sound setup/Radio - Disable Radio Communications.

Close the game.

6. Like 3 above, go into the settings tab. On the 'Video' tab, select 'Custom'. On the 'texture MipMap filter' select 'Trilinear'. Doing it this way means that your video card has set the majority of the game up but you have selected the anisotropic filtering ie. 'Application Controlled' in 4 above.

Close the setup and start the game. You will need to check your resolution again because it defaults back to 640 etc each time you open the setup.

It is important to note that you can only alter video settings on the 'Hardware Setup' tabs whilst the game is running - you can't alter the video card setting, you have to close the game down first to do this.

You might find the attached 'Conf description' and 'il2 setup explained' useful for reference. Also, IL2Stab is a great programme and can be found here http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=2169 . It allows you to change settings without going into the setup. Used it for years, very reliable.

Have fun!

I sure do hope you're remembering this incorrectly... an Nvidia 6200 has never cost over EUR 40.00, maybe 50.00, max!

It's truly a low-budget card, has always been, and still is... :blink:

Looks like this issue is sorted.

I researched it on Jedipedia nd got the answer that it was "Hardwareshaders=0" that was the problem. Should be set to 1 to enable my graphics card to take over doing this sort of thing.

I am now also seeing the sun reflected on water etc. FT's market Garden map looked really cool last night as well. In all the excitement I forgot to check my conf.ini for 2.1 to see if it was set in there are not. Might be a whole new game has opened up for me.......

"Thanks Jedipedia, you saved the day"

The Dangerdogz would like to point out that it can not be held responsible for all the information contained in Jedipedia and when accessing the Jedipedia site there have been some recorded incidents of the "flush" virus which prevents you from stopping the downloads from Jedipedia. Our technical experts have been looking into this virus and believe that issuing the the first level command ">PBQ" which is activates the "Please B Quiet" filter. If that does not work you may need to go "hardcore" and issue a "STFU" instruction.

Regards

Friar
