What's your IL2-rig?

I thought it might be interesting to know what kind of a set-up we all have, like that if we have a problem or are thinking of upgrading we'll know who else might be able to troubleshoot/ advise.

I'm a "value-rigger" (just invented that term :D): I'll buy a top of the line motherboard, but everything else will be mid-range with view to upgrading components as the latest and bestest gets superceded and drops in price.

My current rig is coming to the end of its lifecycle and will get replaced when BOB comes out:

Asus A7N8X-X (onboard SoundStorm)

AMD 1700 --> AMD 2500

512 MB PC133 --> 1 Gig PC2700 --> 1 Gig PC3200

ATI 8500 --> 9600 XT --> X850 pro

20 Gig HDD --> 20 Gig + 60 Gig HDD --> 60 + 200 Gig HDD

Logitech 5.1 Z560 speakers (I think)

Antec 300W dual fan (replaced a generic "300W" PSU which caused me no end of trouble before I realized it was the source of all my frustration).

TIR1, CH Throttle, CH pedals, MSFFB2.

My most recent purchase was the 1 Gig of PC3200, which I bought yesterday. I'm using it to overclock the 2500 to 3200 speeds (seems stable after 40 mins of continual BlackDeath track looping).

At this point I've made about all the upgrades I can with this motherboard but I may still

1) flash the X850XT bios to the x850pro card I have to unlock the 4 locked pipes.... I've never done a bios-flash so I'm a little leery to fuck around with what ain't broke-

2) get an after-market CPU heatsink+fan... I've had to add some voltage to the CPU core to get it to run at a 195 FSB, whereas the RAM should do at least 200 FSB if the CPU can... It's not as if the CPU runs too hot at the moment (48-50 degrees under load) , but I'd like to push the 2500 to the 200 FSB or further if possible.

PS- Quazi: I was incorrect in saying that the overclocking was not resulting in higher average FPS. Not only are my minimum FPS better, but my average FPS have increased approximately 7-10 as between XP2500 and XP3200 clocks... Happy to be proven wrong! :D

I started PF about 1 1/2 yrs ago, flew with many crashes (computer & plane) and after XMas put together my own setup.

MOBO ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe

CPU AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego

GPU ATI X850XT PCI-E

Memory Corsair XMS3500LL 2GB

HD Western Digital Raptor 10K 74GB

Sound Audigy 2 Zs

Things run much better now, only plane crashes, and lots of em.

Aren't all the pipes open (16) on a X850XT ??

I've got one of the x850pros that can be BIOS flashed to open the 4 remaining pipelines.

Nice rig by the way :) What are your BlackDeath.ntrk scores like?

Rig Specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium 4/3.2 GHz/800Mz FSB/Hyperthreading

RAM: 2 GB Samsung 2700 PC

Video: ATI 9800 XT/Cat 6.1 Drivers

PSU: 500 W

Audio: Audigey 2

OS: XP Pro

4 fans, 2 80MM/2 120mm. Sounds like a Hoover but can exchange interior air in less than 2 seconds.

Monitor: Needed badly. Currently using my wifes NEC FE991SB after mine lost Vertical Sync and my 17" CTL standby gave up the ghost. Her monitor has weak colorguns so the picture is all wonky. either too dark or too washed out with a tint of magenta all the time.

Doesn't affect your fine play my friend. I'll trade you my rig for some of your skills.

Rattler, go ahead and post it. then we can be in awe of how well you do with your rig and how badly we do with our ultra-uber rigs. Remember, it the man not the plane.

Attention TFT users!

I'm looking to upgrade my monitor as two CRT's have failed in as many weeks. I'm looking for a 19" screen, excellent color & color management, (I skin so I need highly accurate colors). but I am concerned about "ghosting". What brand of TFT are you using? What is the response time? What is the native resolution? What kind of FPS are you getting in game with that resolution? Would you buy another one if this one died or you were upgrading to a larger screen?

Thanks in advance.

I just upgraded my monitor. After having the "love of my life" 19" NEC FE991SB lose it's vertical sync, then having my old standby 17" CTL also bite the dust, I just got a 19" Viewsonic VA902b LCD display. 8ms response time! Under $300.00!! Nice bright picture, colors are AWESOME! Text is sharp!

-AND-

The game has never looked so good. I had to put the native resolution of 1280 X 1024 into the FB conf.ini file but I don't even notice the two small black bands top and bottom unless,,,I use the plane mirror. It gets replicated in the lower left corner in the empty area.:o

That small niggle aside, NO DEAD PIXELS! NO GHOSTING! I couldn't be happier. As Quazi would say..."Man this game is beautiful!"

My new rig is coming this week (supposedly). I'll list full stats later, but its a AMD Dual Core 4400+, 2GB RAM, Nvidea 7800 with 250GB Hard Drive. In addition to being much more of an editing machine, I am hoping it will make hosting that much smoother.

Can anyone recommend some utilities to put the PC through its paces to make sure its put together properly? For example, to make sure the memory is not defective, etc... Thanks.
