Wanted GTX970

Painless

Hello chaps, if anyone hears of a Nvidia GTX 970 going extremely cheaply then I would like to know. A last ditch attempt to resolve my CLOD playing issues without a new comp. Could be that my CoreDuo 3.2 CPU would still struggle but it's worth a try.

Cheers.

If I could make a suggestion Mick, you might be better off looking for a core 2 quadcore CPU. IIRC they have the same pinout as the core2 duo

+++EDIT+++ Just checked and the core2 quads use the LGA775 connection which is the same as the core2 duo and therefore should be cross-compatible (it worked for me on my rig anyway) Look for a Q9650 or Q9660 as they were the last and fastest of the CPUs in that range. Sadly I sold mine when I bought the i5 otherwise you could have had it gratis but hopefully someone here might have a spare. They're going for less than 100 on eBay too.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252781620466 - £70 (Q9660)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201843881717 - £50 (Q9650)

I ran CloD on a Q9660 and a GTX580

What issues are you having Mick?  I ran Cliffs with the same processor pretty well.

You've already got an Nvidia 680 haven't you?  That is still a decent card and should have no problems with Cliffs.

If you're having problems now I'd be very surprised if getting 970 would help.  As Jabo suggested; getting a newer processor in the multi-core range would be a better option than a new graphics card.

However if Mr P gets a 970 and there is no improvement at least he has a card that will run CloD AND DCS (also BoS)

Oh, it surely will!

That's why he's here :)

He cán try the 970, as it can be used in anorher system, I just do not think he should try the Q-processor... maybe only if it's a freebee ....

Bear in mind too Mick, if you do go for a 970, you may need a new PSU as well as your existing one may not have the correct power connectors.

Me thinks it's not worth it to try and put money of the amounts mentioned in this old a system!

Chances of significant gain in performance are limited, and not worth that kind of moneys...

I think you're right FT.   Mick does run a GTX680, no?  Check this out;

A 680 on this will run all the modern stuff just fine.  Fifty-one Squid!   A quick trip to the nearest Maplin shop to pick up one of their excellent, cheapie PSU's and it'll run anything.

Job done.:thumbsu:

Already got that CPU ... I'm good for now.

Although, my board and stuff on it is like 6 years old now. Should maybe replace it with something new. And then send the old stuff out to mr. P...  On the other hand, the thing still runs fine, and I can do without all the hassle of changing it over ... blêh ... :)

Thanks chaps, a few options to consider. I am inclined to think that my CPU is at least some of the problem. My card is a a GTX 670 btw.

A new machine would be the answer of course but that will have to wait. I can run CLOD without the terrible frame rates at the lower resolution of 1600x 1080 or something like that. Normal resolution is 1920 x1200.

Does that point to CPU or card or both ?

Well, that's just the trouble here.

It's all about balance, and either new CPU or GPU may help gain performance ... but I don't see a sure way to determine which of the two is best here ... :(

Too bad no one has showed up having a spare 970 ...

Part of the problem might be that you're running 1920x1200 rather than the more common 1920x1080. Might be pushing a 670 a bit hard. I have a spare 780 though if you want to try that. It's currently near Maidstone I think

780 will need 2x6pin power connectors and might push the PSU a bit. plus it is quite a long rascal [emoji4]

I think the one I had needed 1 8-pin and 1 6-pin

Agreed FT, I think it would fit and run fine. Will try the 780 when BB sends it. After that maybe look for the four core CPU Nick suggested. Once again thanks chaps.
