Ok. I'm up getting things going on the new machine. Finally got my Internet access working, but the Windows Live One Care that is provided by my ISP will not install. It says that I have an incompatible Operating System. What virus protection software do those of you running XP Professional x64 use?

Thank you thank you thank you Mr. Cuda :wav2: The 8 prong I had on the vid card was for the mobo. Somehow I missed plugging a second power supply to the board. Plugged it in and attached the correct power supply to the vid card and she fired right up, slicker than snot! Windows XP 64 bit is loading as I type this. Thank again to all who helped me get it going. Woo Hoo....first build ever up & running....I might have to go run naked in the snow to celebrate.

Using a Corsair 750 Watt PSU. It has both of the required connections, and both are plugged-in.

Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 X2 It requires 2 plugs from the power supply. One six pin (IDE?) and an eight pin. I tried pulling the memory and running with each one alone, but nothing different happened. Will give Gec's suggestion a try when I get home this evening. Thanks for the help so far everyone.

Well the news is.......my new rig is assembled, or so I thought. I plugged it in, turned the power on & nothing sizzled or smoked. A few lights on the mother board came on. Including a start button that slowly pulses on & off. So I press the power button on my case & she roars to life. All sorts of things light-up & the fans are running. Thus I listen for a short beep & watch the monitor.............Well, no beep & the monitor never light just stays orange. What the crap have I done wrong? Streaks is a very sad panda.

Ok got another quick question. My new rig will have 4 gigs of ram. Will windows xp recognize that, or do I still need the 64 bit version?

Due to info gathered here & some feedback from Quazi, I'll be rethinking & downsizing to stay within my budget. More mass confusion to come.

Thanks B16Enk. I Guess I could use some advise in that area too. Can I use the version of XP Home that came with my HP Laptop to get the new desktop up & running? If not, what is my best option? Remember, this is the first time I've ever tried to build a computer. I know nothing about it, but feel that a few of you here are more than capable of walking me through it. (Well I hope so anyway )

Ok, This thread is being revived now that I'm getting a tax return. Following is the list of what I have & what I'm considering getting. So could some of the more build-experienced members here chime in. I need to know if the chosen components will work together, ext. All help & suggestions welcome. I'm also looking for suggestions for how big of a PSU I'll need & what type of CPU coolers to look at. I've seen a couple around here too Bucky. One of them was just two or three miles away from our home. Also watched a mother Bobcat & her cubs playing once while sitting on a hillside during the deer hunt. Other than that we have Black Bear & Coyote round here too. BTW That is one nice specimen in the pic. I could never hunt them, but wouldn't hesitate to shoot one in self defense. Luckily the ones I've seen were trying to elude detection rather than stalking me.
