The Day I Dream Of........

Recommended Posts

January 2013

One sunny day in January, 2013 an old man approached the White House from across Pennsylvania Avenue , where he'd been sitting on a park bench. He spoke to the U.S. Marine standing guard and said, "I would like to go in and meet with President Obama."

The Marine looked at the man and said, "Sir, Mr. Obama is no longer president and no longer resides here."

The old man said, "Okay", and walked away.

The following day, the same man approached the White House and said to the same Marine, "I would like to go in and meet with President Obama."

The Marine again told the man, "Sir, as I said yesterday, Mr. Obama is no longer president and no longer resides here."

The man thanked him and, again, just walked away.

The third day, the same man approached the White House and spoke to the very same U.S. Marine, saying "I would like to go in and meet with President Obama."

The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the man and said, "Sir, this is the third day in a row you have been here asking to speak to Mr. Obama. I've told you already that Mr. Obama is no longer the president and no longer resides here. Don't you understand?"

The old man looked at the Marine and said, "Oh, I understand. I just love hearing it."

The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "See you tomorrow, Sir."

No worries. In a few years you'll all be Norwegian citizens. Just watch.

Well, Norway was recently voted the BEST country in the world to live in, so becoming a Norwegian citizen doesn’t seem to be an odious burden. I can actually see some of the benefits. Norway, and for that matter all of Scandinavia, has excellent food and you have definitely figured out the secret to producing pretty women. So there are many positive things to look forward to.

I would have liked to have added Mead to the list of things that Scandinavian countries excel at. But as strange as it may sound, and meaning no offense, the best Mead that I’ve personally had was Polish Royal Mead. ;)

I’m also a bit less sure of how well some of your local Norwegian customs and traditions will go over with Texans. Texans are very resourceful, but perhaps a bit ridged in their thinking, but overall I’m hopeful that we will adapt well.

But please realize that once the Texans learn about Norwegian taxes, that there will be some friction. :terrorist:

How well the Norwegians adapt to being around Texans also remains to be seen. :riot:

I can understand why you might choose to settle initially in Wisconsin or Minnesota. After all, Viking Runes were supposedly discovered in Minnesota, so that would be a good place for you to start. But I wouldn’t count Texas out just because of the heat. The temperature in Dallas is actually about the same as it is here in Cairo. Dallas does have higher humidity than Cairo, so it can feel a bit more uncomfortable.

But you Scandinavians have been in hot climates before. The shock troops of the Byzantine Varangian Guard were Vikings, mostly Swedes, but Vikings none the less. So there is a historic precedence to you guys flourishing in hot climates.

There is also your national pride to consider.

If Robert de LaSalle :le_French: could make it all the way down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico and then eventually start a French colony in Texas, how can any self respecting Norwegian at least not try to settle in Texas. ;)

I thought 8 years with the last fool was enough. :)

I'll stand my ground, and beg to differ. (Though I won't argue the point, as I understand that we will always see things differently in these matters)

No fighting amongst Dogz allowed.

We’re family here and like family, we sometimes have to agree to disagree. Anyone who has been married knows how that works. ;)

I’ve got a sister who is practically a Bolshevik, but she’s still my sister.

As-Salam Alaikum = Peace be upon you all.

As an outsider I don't see the media spin that Americans get in the news. I see the results. I don't see that it matters who is "in power".

They all support the interests of corporations and the powerful(rich) to the detriment of the public. I guess that's who pays the bills of their campaign.

Again, as an outsider, I see American politics as corrupt as any third world dictatorship all driven by money. NAFTA, TARP etc only benefit the corporations and big business while stealing from the people.

You do know that the TARP bailouts could have paid off every mortgage in the United States right? They took they money, sold out America and invested it overseas.

I've been listening to Alex Jones (the conspiracy nut) for a few years off and on. The more the predictions comes to pass the less you can write him off as a nut.

Quite a few documentaries over the years, all free to view on youtube. He doesn't want your money, he wants to save America. You Yanks would call him a patriot though the press paints a good picture of a nutbar.

The latest is the Obama Deception. Watch it on youtube.

I challenge you to watch it with an open mind.

Over the last decade I've come to the conclusion that the corporations simply have too much power and influence NOT to be corrupt and to corrupt all they influence - government.

The only way we'll take the power away is to hit em where it hurts. Money.

I don't buy from Home Depot, Walmart, Costco, Best Buy or Pizza Hut for that matter.

I buy from the locally owned Home Hardware, Lugano's pizza(mom and pop place) Turkstra Lumber (local guy, been here for 40+ years) Alexanians carpet and flooring(since 1923) Goeman's Appliances (1948), Keiths Car Stereo(1970) .

The bigger they are the farther I stay away.

We all must accept some social responsibility to make change. As a consumer you have the power.

THIS is the only way we'll clean up the damn mess we're in. We CAN manufacture in North America though there may not be as much profit in it ..sorry, no million $ bonuses though ... tough s**t, at least I still have a job and will continue to support the local economy.

OK, sorry folks, I'm off my soap box now.

I do believe that your heart is in the right place, and I agree with you for the most part, but I don't agree that the politics is irrelevant. The current Communist/Socialist agenda that is being propagated worldwide is not for the American people and I don't see it being of any use to Canadians and Brits either. Leaving control of ............

You know, I'm not going to say any more here, I doubt that my opinion is wanted any way. I will only say that I love my country and I see my way of life passing away............

........and I only hope that I do before it does..............

The current Communist/Socialist agenda that is being propagated worldwide....

No offence BA, you're a nice bloke, but wtf are you talking about? Never mind that Communism and socialism are two very separate political philosophies, just where in the wide world is this supposed agenda being peddled?

One answer might be, in the heads of a group of press and pundits whose main intention is to incite fear in their gullible audience. We saw that when certain "experts" reported that Britain's National Health Service used "death lists" to highlight patients who (reportedly) weren't worth saving; and again when it was stated that "Professor Stephen Hawking would be dead if he had needed to rely on the NHS". Embarrassingly, it was pointed out that the good prof IS, and always has been, an NHS patient. The truth falls by the wayside in the face of good politicking however, and came too late to prevent the fear from taking hold.

Try to hold onto the idea that a social health system does not equate to socialism or Communism just because the word social is being used. Excuse my sarcasm.

I did watch the health care debate going on in the States. Rather amusing.

My daughter and I would often look at each other with wide eyes and mouths open at the fear mongering and just plain lies being told.

In our "socialist" country we have universal health care. It may not be perfect but there is a great deal of comfort knowing that when you are sick or hurt you just go to a clinic or the hospital and you will be treated - and treated pretty darned well I might add. No forms, no credit cards, no mention of payment, only "how are you feeling?".

I never even gave it any thought till I saw people being sent away from hospitals in the Sates because they had no "plan".

I'm now grateful.

The only bad part is that Ontario has 7 million people registered for health care ..... only 5 million live here. I dunno the real numbers but it's something like that.

If socialism means everyone has a responsibility to look after everyone else in some small way .... I'm in.

For the record - I love your country and it's people too BA. As for the crooks who run it - not so much and I suspect the next Prez will be just as much a lying sack of **** as this one, or the last one, or the one before that.

And I'm pretty sure it's an International Banker Cartel, not the commies.

Again, I invite you to view The Obama Deception on youtube.

No offense to you Either Brando but WTF are you talking about? I never mentioned anything about health care, and it's not relevant to anything I said. I'm quite familiar with the differences between Socialism and Communism, but since I have not read Marx, I'll not argue them. I personally see the difference as pure semantics, but I can see how you might see things otherwise.

Please stop assuming I'm stupid, Brando and come with a relevant argument and we might have something to talk about. Excuse the sarcasm .

I don't assume you are stupid BA, and I'm sorry if I come over that way. I was using the health examples to highlight my thoughts about pundits really, and to criticise the spin that is put on anything different.

And, I'll admit it, to pull you over regarding "The current Communist/Socialist agenda that is being propagated worldwide." I still don't understand what that means. When I look around Britain and the rest of the European states I can't find any trace of what I think you mean. All I see is consumerism and a desire to kickstart our economies so that we can carry on consuming.
