Local Connection Is Unconnecting

This has developed in the last few weeks, all seemed fine prior and I don't know what could have caused this situation.

I have two computers, both with ASUS Motherboards, one still operates on XP (32) and the other Windows 7 (64). I have a DSL ISP with Verizon (now Frontier) and hock into a Westell Model 327W Modem/Router, the thing which all the wires go in and out of. It has wireless capabilities, not in use and 4 slots for an Ethernet cable to hock up PCs.

The Problem: The old computer (XP) keeps flashing, Local Area Connection 6 A Network Cable is Unplugged

For a while I also got a notice that: Windows System Error A duplicate name exist on the network

For this I changed the computer names, had been the same and this seems to have taken care of that problem. I'm still receiving the Local Connection problem and have tried the following.

Installed a new Treadnet T10/100/1000 Copper based NIC, Installed a new Ethernet cable, moved the cable to different ports on the router, where ever its slotted it startsm losing connection, while the main, Windows 7 computer runs fine. I've flushed the DNS cache and don't know where to turn.

Have you tried bypassing your router and directly connecting your cable modem to your pc that keeps disconnecting? See if that router is the problem?

About once every two weeks my router just stops working and I have to unplug it and then plug it back in to fix it. I think it may be a signal strength problem.

This is very weird.

You've already changed all the components that could be faulty..

The only things I can think of now are:

1. Power related:

- The power supply is on its way out, it could be spiking, and thus messing up the signals on the network cable

- The power outlet to your computer is at fault? Is it connected to the same outlet the Windows 7 computer is connected to?

2. Malware?

Windows System Error                               A duplicate name exist on the network actually means that your network is working. Cause it found a duplicate name on the network.

Local Area Connection 6                  A Network Cable is Unplugged does not have to mean anything. could be that u have a BlueTooth adapter connected to your computer. 

what u have to do is:

- go to command prompt ( windows key + r, type cmd in the box and press OK )

- in the command prompt type

ipconfig

and press enter 

- resize the command prompt window so u can see all the text, right click anywhere in the window and select

Mark

- left click in the upper left corner in the window and drag the mouse to the lower right point to create a box around all the text

- press enter (that will copy everything to the clipboard)

- come back here and paste the text here 

- do that on both computers

(Ah, I get it Gec, you think both computers use the same IP address. I kinda overlooked that ... good thinkin' ...)

I did run "Whats my IP" on each machine and it does show the same IP address..

I'll give the above suggestions a go and report back here soon.

I think Gec is talking about your internal IP's Pook. Each computer should have it's own unique IP. What you searched was your external IP which will be the same for each computer.

On the run line type in:

cmd

Hit enter, you now have a command console running (black box with flashing cursor).

Now type in that:

ipconfig /all

Hit enter and copy the text as suggested by Gec.

I've found the ipconfig, did the MARK and went from top left to bottom right encasing all. Hit enter and it changed to black again, where is the clipboard, not familiar with this site.

hmm... unfortunately it is not enough info. what u could do is select all the text, hit enter, create new text document on your desktop (right click on the Desktop -> New -> Text document, and paste there. then figure out a way to post this.

When I ran the Ipconfig on the XP computer, the first time it gave me about 5 lines of data, I ran another time and more info was included. The most I can get from it now is what I've typed. I've run it over again (4 times) and get up to Physical Address 00-14-D1-1A-52-B6 and then it goes to the C; prompt.

When I first built the Windows 7 machine, I just plugged in a new Ethernet wire to the back of the router next to the existing XP PC. I don't recall any problem at first, later it started flashing the Connection loss.

If I take the XP PC off line, unhook the ethernet cable, the Windows 7 works fine, no temporary drops in connection.

I'll work on getting the rest of the config on the XP box. Pooka

Hm, I now recall a similar issue, not with a router, but with a switch.

(Basically, a router is a switch with some added functionality, like a firewall...)

The switch had a bad capacitor, which only failed if more than one computer was connected to it.

With just one computer connected to it, it would do fine.

I replaced the capacitor, and all was good...

So, in the end, yes, the router is the main suspect here...

After all the problems you have had Pooka, I would definitely invest in a new router. I have a Linksys BEFSR41 which is very reliable and quite reasonably priced. I'm on a DSL set up, the telephone line that goes into the router has a different connection (smaller) than the Ethernet line that comes out of the router and than plugs into the PC box.

So unless I'm missing something again, I'd never heard of this "clipboard " feature. Why doesn't BG tell me when these new innovations come out?

Thanks Snacko, I'm going after the Router today, sure hope this is the problem, and I'd guess it is. Connection is getting worse than it was last week, so it must be some component that is failing and continuing to do so.

I'll look this over when my new router/modem arrives in a day or two. They also concurred that the problem was probably the router. If all goes well I'll check the settings with what you've sent today.
