oh man...how freakin' corny - Flyboy movie

How is it they can spend so much money on the great CG graphics, but obviously spend nothing on a screenplay.

It's like Pearl Harbour with Ben Affleck all over again. Disgraceful in the fact so many will think it is historic - and not Hollywood crap.

Barf!

(ok...long link I know...cut and paste in and it works...unfortunately).

A long link gone short :)

That part with the Spad and the Zeppelin certainly casts doubt upon the quality that can be expected from the whole package.

I can just see it now............ "Don't worry, those new Fokker triplanes are fast sonsabitches, but our Jennys can outrun 'em".

I shiver.

I don't know. I am not nearly as pessimistic, but maybe its because I want it to be good. It could indeed stink, but I am hopeful. Why?

One, Ben Affleck is nowhere to be seen. Good start.

Two, the Producers and Director are not from Pearl Harbor. Nice follow-up.

I know, thin reeds, but I'll take them.

Maybe I am feeling good about it not because of this film itself, but the fact that they even made any film on the subject at all. Think about it. When was the last time a film based on bi-plane combat was made at all, let alone a big-budget one? Perhaps I am hopeful not about this particular film itself, but at the prospect that more like it might be made. Even if it is only a thrill ride I'll take it for now, unless I hear it is absolutely awful.

I think that the capabilites of modern CGI combined with the inherent excitement of aerial combat should be a no brainer for film makers. I've said it before and I'll say it again.

Make a big budget, 3 hour film of the Battle of Britain with a decent script, and it would be a huge success. Make one with a GREAT script which shows the stakes and the sacrifice involved and it should be a smash.

I don't know; as strange as it seems, I somehow find Flyboys a heartening sign that such a film, and more like it, will be made.

Anyone hear anything more about the Dam Busters movie?

I bloody hope its not the normal Hollywood fiasco !!

I'm fed up with people saying "WWI, WWII, whats the point in dwelling on them , lets move on , its in the past"

Maybe, but we can only "move on" in the right direction if we learn from humanities mistakes and tragedies.

Correct me if I'm wrong but there were quite a few tragedies in both of the world wars right .

My point is that an accurate, non glorifying historical tribute to the millions of people involved is the only way the "don't give a shit" young people of today are going to "learn " from history. Most of them sure as hell won't get a book out of the library will they !!

Sorry to go off on one but it's important !! I'LL wind my neck in now, before I burst a blood vessel !! LOL

SO SPEAKETH THE REVEREND PAINFULL ~S~

I completely agree with Painless....[rant]but it's too late, in our attempt to honour and remember the cruelties and sacrifices, we made history nothing more then a "cheap" snack (video games - pc games - movies)

Even my own kids....but...daddy has a 10 dvd collection with nothing but original footage, with all the horror, and it's a wake up call for them....[/rant]

About the movie....correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there not only ONE red baron who flew red colours???......I saw 'bout 5 or 6 tri-planes in that trailer in red.....and, sorry for this too, but I don't think that a black pilot in the 1st WW is accurate as well....but I could be wrong

The first black pilots I know of, flew in WW2, made up into a black squadron only (yeah, racial shiat) (they flew p-51's) escorting B-25's....they have the record of the least casualty's among themselves AND the bombers they escorted...There tail was in the colour red...check it out if ya don't believe me...there was even a "based on true events" movie made about them.......

May I point out that I was appointed Chaplain for this fine group of fighting heros.

Smite him! Smite him!

Oh, and Sged, there was a black fighter pilot in WWI. I don't know a lot about him, and I'll shut up so Enforcer or Waldo don't have to put me straight, but I know that he did exist.

Actually, I'm with Doubletap. I want it to be good and I'd be willing to overlook some things. They actually built several full scale flying aircraft (at least 4 Nieuports) for this movie so it's not all CGI. I first found out about this movie when I came across some company selling a bunch of the aircraft off. Quite impressive really. Working against it is the fact that the director, whilst a producer on the classic film "The Sting", has been working on TV shows since then (Although he did direct Untamed Heart and Crazy People which were ok).

Black US WW1 pilots...I know of at least one - Eugene Bullard. I know he survived the war and was awarded the Croix de Guerre in the French army before learning to fly. And he stayed after the war until Germany moved back in during WW2 and then he went back to the States. There was a book about him...Black Swallow something.

As for the Dr1 colour schemes, Richthofen's Jasta 11 squadron was painted red for easy identification by one another. Most of the aircraft within the squadron had personal touches but were basically red. In fact Richthofen's Dr1 for some time only had a red tail, top of fuselage and top wing - the rest was varnished clear. Later on a number of Jasta 11 were painted a solid red.

Anyway, I hope it doesn't suck. Here is link to a somewhat larger sized trailer...it looks better when you can see it

~S~ Gentlefolks,

Just watched that clip, flying sceens look awsome !! (great FX )

The "romance" angle seemed to be there, so we have two of the three basic ingredients that make up the normal Hollywood formula for success, (the other being big star names). There are of course notable exceptions to this "rule", but I'll be very pleasantly surprised if the script/story line, is as hard hitting as it needs to be .

What say you chaps ?? I'd be interested to know.

Sorry Frior, I am in no way trying to be "closer to god" than your good self M8 !! LOL

the multiple red planes is correct actually. the red barons squadron mates wanted him to change colors because it made him a target so he squad mates painted their planes in bright color like red wit subtle differences from his plane. that is how they got the name flying circus.

 ps i think that is the full story. i got it from an old book called Knights of the Sky.
