2. Administrators Jabo Posted February 10, 2009 2. Administrators Share Posted February 10, 2009 Hi guys, hopefully someone out there can assist me. I had some serious issues this evening with single figure frame rates both online and offline during frantic efforts to 'fix' (ha ha) the problem. Some of the guys online suggested posting a dxdiag and my conf.ini, for you techie bods to have a squint at, so here they are. Fingers crossed the problem will be diagnosed at least. Thanks in advance ~S~ Jabo Not sure how to attach files here, so popped them in the vault for now. Files
1. DDz Quorum FoolTrottel Posted February 11, 2009 1. DDz Quorum Share Posted February 11, 2009 The DxDiag Report looks fine to me, though I must state I'm no too familiar with the Vista ones... (Your Conf.ini I could not retrieve from the vault, it seems to be missing.) However, the way the drop happens, sounds to me like some other (not IL2 related) process has started running in the background. Maybe some Vista timed one. Or a Virusscanner update. Or defrag. Or Vista maintenance stuff... So, next time this drop occurs, alt-tab out of IL2, start the task manager, and check if there's a process eating CPU cycles... I can rule out anti-virus activity, and there doesn't seem to be anything else grabbing resources, but I'll have to check again I guess. ~S~ Jabo
1. DDz Quorum B16Enk Posted February 11, 2009 1. DDz Quorum Share Posted February 11, 2009 Dxdiag looks good, you should be able to raise Sound Hardware acceleration a notch (or even all the way up with multi-core) What we need to see is your conf.ini (just copy and paste contents here I have set post size to allow thousands and thousands of words ) Also what AA/AF settings do you have for your vid card? Perfesser
I used to have issues with choppiness (some process taking up CPU at the worst time) but I now go into task manager and set IL2FB.exe to "high" or "realtime" priority after the game starts. I set TS to "above normal". This has always made things better for me, however, a few Dogs tried that and their situation got worse. You could go through all processes to see if any others are at high priority. Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up task manager, select task, right click, set priority, ignore warning. Kinda curious why TrackIR(with Freetrack) is always at lowest priority...... I'm afraid this has made things significantly worse as now FreeTrack doesn't work in the game at all and even when I put IL2 back to it's original setting, the issue with FreeTrack remains. I'm beginning to wonder if it might not be better just to go back to XP and stop fannying around... ~S~ Jabo Oh this is just bizarre. Without shutting the game down, I've just launched the QMB again, and I'm back to my more usual 60+ frames per sec...and FreeTrack's working fine. Changed aircraft - still fine. Changed aircraft again, back to 10 fps. WTF!!! LOL alt-tab out and back into game - now 60fps. Alt-tab a second time - back to
1. DDz Quorum B16Enk Posted February 11, 2009 1. DDz Quorum Share Posted February 11, 2009 In conf.ini find: ;ProcessAffinityMask=1 remove the ; at start of line. Set affinity for Trackview etc to other cpu core, retest.
2. Administrators Jabo Posted February 11, 2009 Author 2. Administrators Share Posted February 11, 2009 Set affinity for Trackview etc to other cpu core Sorry for being dense - how do I do this? Doesn't help I'm afraid - now FreeTrack doesn't work and I'm still at 10fps I don't understand this at all - it's been working fine for a couple of weeks without any problems - now (without changing any programs, installing anything new - it's FUBAR - not happy. Worth a re-install of windows or not? Is there a Linux version of IL2? - Only partly joking
1. DDz Quorum B16Enk Posted February 11, 2009 1. DDz Quorum Share Posted February 11, 2009 Right click task bar > Task Manager. Click processes tab. Find process belonging to track view, right click > set affinity and select the core to assign it to. IL2 should be running only on core 0 (that is what the conf.ini change did). I would do the same with TeamSpeak too, mine was being really screwy the other night until I set it to run on core 1 ( 0=#1 1=#2)
2. Administrators Jabo Posted February 11, 2009 Author 2. Administrators Share Posted February 11, 2009 No better I'm afraid Rog. I have found something interesting though - The problem only seems to surface when I alt-tab back to the desktop. This indicates a pretty obvious solution, but I like to be able to hop out and back into the game again while I'm waiting for everyone else to finish. ~S~ Jabo

I'm not sure how Vista responds - but alt-tabbing back & forth has mostly been a no-no for me, throughout the life of the game. I've been able to fix the 'frozen cursor' issue by using the Windows key, with a moderate amount of success, but alt-tabbing out of a running game usually means that I can't maximise the game again and have to do a hard re-set. IIRC it is even mentioned in the manual, that alt-tabbing facility is not built into the game. B
Perfesser
Every time I alt tab out something goes wonky(TS mic hiss or Freetrack lockup) or the game crashes. If I use the windows key it almost always works fine. In your case I might try a system restore to a date before the problems surfaced but since my last suggestion caused you more problems I'll just

Durrr...Not sure m8, will have a looky Hmm, that's an interesting point FT, as I am currently running a higher monitor resolution than usual - I wonder if switching between modes is causing this - Oh well, I'll go kick the tires and light the fires and see what happens.
