  1. This is cute: http://www.wimp.com/throwstick/
  2. Guys, Is there a way to configure the IL-2 controls for proportional control of dive brakes? I think in dive bombers you'd want the brakes to be full on or full off, but some of the jets (F-86, MiG-15) would benefit from an incremental control, maybe a slider.
  3. And my apologies to you for getting upset over this petty thing.
  4. Arthur, You deleted JP's words and my words and links, and replaced them with your own. That's a form of vandalism.
  5. After JP's post disappeared the other day, I posted a link to the original article. This morning, my posting had been altered and the link deleted. Here is the link, again: http://the-salfordian.com/the-big-fat-greek-gravy-train-a-special-investigation-into-the-eu-funded-culture-of-greed-tax-evasion-and-scandalous-waste/
  6. Gave Mrs Pup a nice handbag from Rome, a dozen roses and dinner at an Italian restaurant. Getting weak in my old age....
  7. Good post, JP. I had no idea things were that far out of control.
  8. Some of us were wondering about the purpose of the perforated dive brakes on the SBD. Turns out it was to reduce longitudinal instability and buffeting in the dive. Good article here: http://www.vectorsite.net/avsbd.html And for the technically minded, a wind tunnel report (from 1941) here: http://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc61452/m1/1/
  9. Someone on comms yesterday mentioned Swede Vejtasa, who among other accomplishments, bagged three Zekes in one mission.....while flying an SBD. YouTube has it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEnDjwXnj3Y and part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1NTUzj7cGw&feature=related
  10. This could very well be a Darwin Award contender:
  11. Thanks for that info, Madfish. The inflight "anti-flutter lock" seemed kind of hokey. The Brits did a thorough analysis of this aircraft but obviously mis-interpreted a few things. Somewhere I read of the Ju-88 having a rear-facing "flamethrower" for defense, but that was apparently the fuel dump mechanism.
  12. Really interesting to browse this: http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1940/1940%20-%203422.html

The Red Tail trailer doesn't look promising. That's a shame, as the the Tuskegee story deserves better. The Tuskegee Airmen were led by Benjamin Davis, one of the first blacks ever to graduate from West Point. During his time at the military academy, he was shunned by his classmates and endured four years of West Point in complete isolation. He still graduated in the top third of his class, quite an accomplishment in those conditions. From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_O._Davis,_Jr.

  17. Guys, The relation between RPM and manifold pressure in IL-2 doesn't seem right. Fooling around with QMB last night; when I reduced RPM (in cruise flight), the MP also decreased, the opposite of what I would expect. This was true for various aircraft (F4F, F4U, P-51, Ki-84). Is CEM modeled incorrectly or am I simply missing something?
  18. Just when you thought you'd seen everything....
  19. Found this on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FICON_project
  20. Watched it last night. It's a very powerful movie but tragic and disturbing. It reminded me of Das Boot, a war seen from The Other Side. Amazon.com has it here: http://www.amazon.com/9th-Company-Alexei-Chadov/product-reviews/B003OXGW5M

  22. I love the British sense of humor! (or is it humour?!)
