SkyPup
ROF arrived yesterday and I installed it just after dinner. Emerged from my basement about 0100 this morning, reeking of engine fumes and cordite. This sim is sweet. A lot to learn yet, but having a ball with these WW1 birds. Thanks, MT, I really needed another addiction!

Got to stop working so I can fly more I'll be around this weekend so perhaps we could fly together. I'm glad you like the sim. MT
Cold_Gambler
Hehe, welcome to the club! It's pretty cool, eh? Flying over the trenches, artillery shells bringing up great gouts of earth, rain spattering the goggles... NeoQB did a really great job at getting the immersion in, it just feels right; even better than FSX (comparing the Jenny). For some reason I find it a lot easier to fly "full real" (i.e. without icons) than IL2... It just seems to be easier to spot the other a/c but I can't figure out why. Enjoy, maybe I'll catch you guys in the virtual skies someday (haven't even try online yet). C_G

Would be cool to organize a time and date so we could all fly coop tohether. there are a lot of ROF pilots in the Dogz now MT
SkyPup
Would love to fly with you guys on line, but I gotta learn to crawl before I can walk. Still experimenting with settings and trying out the various aircraft. The default aircraft are good, and I also bought the DH-2 and E-III. Both are nice. The visuals in this sim are terrific. Cool to land in an open field, bounce to a stop, and watch the grass gently waving in the breeze. Or to botch the landing and see the pieces of wreckage scatter in exquisite detail. I agree that things are more immersive with the gauges and icons turned off. They block the view of those beautiful cockpits. The start screen shows my video card running at 97%. If I go over 100%, does the video card borrow system RAM and end up with a performance penalty?
1. DDz Quorum Sid Posted December 11, 2010 1. DDz Quorum Report Share Posted December 11, 2010 Ordered Iron Cross edition - should be here next week. I knew I'd succumb in the end - it looks so good! Cheerzen
1. DDz Quorum FoolTrottel Posted December 11, 2010 1. DDz Quorum Report Share Posted December 11, 2010 Got the Demo version. Runs fine, looks fine... yet I do not get the sense of 'flying' that much... is it IL2 that has spoiled me there? Am I having too fond memories of Royal Flying Corps Gold? I do remember sensing speed in that one, having to use heavy side slipping in the Camel just to get her to land... I kinda miss that in ROF... Oh well... HI Skypup, I think that Propnut should be able to answer to your question related to your memory usage but the bottom line is I beleave is to get it to be under 100%. the lower the better for your computer. So try things out and see the defference. I run mine at aroud 63 % and boy is it ever nice. Of course I have an ATI Radeon 6870 running on win7 64 bits 6 gig RAM and a Intel i7 920 Mhz CPU. Running ROF on 3 22'' LCD Monitors on Eyefinity mode. Its awsome.

HI FT, I know the feeling of speed when flying an Albatros D.Va is not like when flying WW2 fighters and it should be that way. Get some stick time done on multiplayer dogfight servers, you'll see...You will experience WW1 AC speed and its quite fast I might add Ordered Iron Cross edition - should be here next week. Kimosabi
I feel the flight pretty equally in both RoF and IL-2. Sense of speed though is much more present for me in RoF than in IL-2. Take the Neuport 28 for example, flying low, just found the sweetspot for fuel mixture and the rotary is screamin while you dodge trees and whatnot. I don't know about you guys but I definitely get a good sense of speed there. It bleeds like crazy though when you start maneuvering so better keep it smooth. LOL I play the game on 97% memory usage and it works fine at 50FPS. It does get smoother if I decrease my settings a bit but I can live with a bit of a compromise. Based on my limited (and somewhat old) experience in glider and Cessna flying I find RoF to give the most "immersive" feeling of flying of any sim to date. Entirely subjective, of course. Neat thing I discovered yesterday: I was flying the Dr.1 and I held the blip switch too long so the engine stopped... but I was able to dive so as to get the prop to windmill and start her up again; I could hear only a few cylinders firing at first but the others kicked in too after a short while. It's details like these that really "make" RoF for me.

You really have the feeling of being in the cockpit flying this heavy and ugly yet most beatiful beast, it is the way it react to your commands (very slowly looking around taking altitude and observe the landscape changing while climbing then line up to your target and level bomb the crap out of it and come back to base, hopefully while being escorted of course. I love this sim ! MT
SkyPup
The graphics and flight model of ROF combine for a convincing flight "feel" so for me, it's quite immersive. The engine sounds and wind noise are nicely done too and add to the overall experience. Added two more aircraft yesterday, Pfalz D-XII and Fokker D-VIII, both really fun. Still just mostly tooling around to get the feel of these birds and jump into an occasional furball. One puzzling thing: Some of the airfields don't have a windsock, or maybe I just don't know where to look. Flying ROF last night and my PC crashed for no apparent reason. I'm wondering if this sim is pushing my machine a little too hard? It's the same PC I've used for IL-2 for the past two years without a system crash. Skypup, if it was an ROF.exe failure, we all have them once in a while and the game crashes. Jason at 777Studios said that there will be a patch out 1.016b wich will fix that problem hopefuly for every body. The patch will be out within the next few hours. Look for it. As far as the wind sock goes, mot all of the mission makers will use them so we will see some airfields without them but hey we can land these AC anywhere right !! As MT said the system crahes due to the new patch have been addressed. The 1.016b "hotfix" patch for this has been released and next time you log in online you'll be prompted to update. re: the windsocks, I was surprised at this too and posted a thread up at SIMHQ about this: My link If you try the Quick MB you'll see that the airfields do have windsocks. You can also add them in by using the RoF FMB (which is a COMPLICATED SOB - WAY less intuitive and user-friendly that the IL-2 FMB! There's a 148-page pdf manual for the RoF FMB, which I've DL'd and printed, but I'm not sure I'll ever invest the time to learn it... I'll probably take a look at some video tutorials that have been made though). The best news is, though, that the 777/NeoQB team are working on a new career mode to replace the current one (see here: My link which looks to be a HUGE improvement over the old and which is rumoured (I couldn't find any formal confirmation) to include functional windsocks at every airfield... I'm not usually one to gripe but the absence of windsocks is pretty egregious. Cheers, C_G

SkyPup
The more I fly ROF, the more I enjoy it. The developers have obviously put a huge effort into this simulation. Just flying over the countryside in these old warbirds is a pleasure. It definitely gives me the sensation of flight in an open cockpit plane, and landing at those little aerodromes is fun. The stall/spin characteristics are very believable, probably the best of any sim I've flown. I'm also starting to see how different it was handling these planes without a tailwheel. The tailskid is a big drag source and comes in handy as a brake on landing. It took me a few takeoffs to realize I needed some forward stick to lighten the tailskid. Not sure if I'll end up flying on-line combat. Just experiencing these old airplanes has made the sim worthwhile for me. Thanks to MT, I bought ROF on sale for 20 bucks, quite a bargain. The add-on aircraft are a nice option and reasonably priced. I expect eventually the more obscure aircraft will be available to us (RE-8, Rumpler, Halberstadt) and I'm looking forward to that. When you consider what a terrific simulation IL-2 has been (10 years of development) and that ROF is still a "young" sim, we have a lot to look forward to.
