  1. I voted any so long as it's an even match as that is my preference, however I do enjoy being the underdog too, as experienced with you Glenn in the P11, as there is nothing better for the ego than getting some spiffed up machine smoking with no more than pea shooters!
  2. Hi Trap and welocme to the kennels! I have also updated your profile, you will now see the HH and DD private section where the 4.05 download is linked Would have been done earlier but BG was more interested in Johnny Walker than letting me know we had a new victim..err...I mean colleague
  3. I don't know if the Asus bios tool will work with your Mobo, bios flashing is one of those things that needs to be perfect so I would steer away from that (I have a copy of the utility here as I have 2 Asus boards but would hate to see you lose your mobo from a bad flash). If you have an Asus CD with your system the EZ Flash utility will be on it, possibly along with ASUS Probe (sounds painful) that will display CPU, Mobo temps and all voltages (and record them too for trouble shooting). Floppy disks are very cheap, buy a box....they can still be indispensable which is why as a 'legacy device' they are still apparent on new PCs. BIOS flash is the lower of your priorities, test your RAM first. RAM 'Qualified for your board': (this list may appear garbled its from Here..) This shows what has been tested to be Ok, if you deviate from this list you need to do your own testing. IL2 will tax memory (and system) much more than most other games/simulations.
  4. Also: Sound card drivers are the latest available for your board. Your BIOS is a Beta version, there is 1009 available Here. Asus (your board maker) do a utility that will enable you to update your BIOS within Windows. As you don't have a floppy (no need for Viagra there then) then this is the only way you can update your BIOS unless you can borrow/buy a USB floppy drive.
  5. Your RAM is not a matched pair You can get an ISO image for Memtest86 and create a bootable CD, as your RAM is not a matched pair I strongly suggest you do this as there could be memory corruption at the root of your issue. Pictures...nice. Everyone of those Icons on your desktop is using memory btw SP2, bummer. Sounds like your copy of XP isn't too Kosher.
  6. Some input I'd like to give: AAA over airfields would work as an anti-vulch quite effectively, primarily because if there are no targets the AAA would be idle and would not impact FR or cause lag. If some spirited vulching were attempted the lag that would ensue should be enough to spoil it for the vulcher....and hopefully the victims would still be able to get airborne. Just a thought! Having a LAN side connection for your client would be more efficient, sharing 100Mbs as opposed to your ISP speed is usually a winner all round . The second copy of IL2 running would have caused some memory page swapping, so as you say is not a good idea! Skin downloads. On a Co-op night this will be Ok, but during a momentous event such as we had not so good. Chances are that some (if not all) of us would not have the skins some wish to parade. This would aggravate spawn lag too. Setting the server connection speed is critical, so it allocates bandwidth to the clients without starving them and causing lag. In days gone by it used to be suggested that clients set their speed settings to the ISDN setting, I don't know if that is still valid or not! Clients that do not have the muscle to render the sim at acceptable framerates can also have a deleterious effect on all players. When the server is waiting for a position/condition feedback from a struggling PC a warp will occur. Hosting and administering a DF server is a thankless task, often requiring the host or admins to F2 through the player roster to make sure there are no warpers (intentional or otherwise) and dealing with them. As we are a squad, and a bloody good one at that, this is not required as we can trust each other to not overtax our systems and spoil the event for others. Aim for around 30fps average in heavy maps and you can be fairly sure you won't cause lag or warp.
  7. Also in first post you state 'AMD 3200+'. Dxdiag indicates it's a 2500+, have you under clocked it for a reason? Should be 200 FSB @ 11 x clock. What rating is your memory? CPU-Z will query and display your clock settings, FSB and memory capabilities. If you are OC'ing you need to use Memtest86 to check RAM (worth doing anyway) and Prime95 torture test to check CPU stability (again worth running for a few hours anyway).
  8. 1. Chipset drivers are very dated. Try: These 2. Graphics driver is dated too, have you tried newer drivers from http://www.nvidia.com? 3. Sound drivers are also dated, SoundMax drivers may be available from your mobo/PC manufacturer. 4. Service pack 2, why have you not installed it? A must have IMO.
  9. Lots 'n lots of words Two driver issues. 1. Sound driver is out of date and a debug version, looking up your model number on the HP site suggests this driver available Here ***Caution, this is for a Realtek chip yet yours appears to be a CMedia model*** HP list it as compatible, if your system is now stable you may be well advised to leave this alone until/unless crashes re-occur. If it is the wrong driver it shouldn't install, however if it does and you end up without sound your current driver can be downloaded from CMedia Here 2. Display driver, on board video drivers also dated http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/soft ... pv-38662-2 Lowering the acceleration as you have done should improve frame rates too The later sound drivers I linked above are also supposed to lower CPU stress too!
  10. Hi m8. Please run: start-run-type in 'dxdiag' and press enter. Let it complete it's tests, then click the 'save all information' button. This will prompt you to create a file on the desktop, called dxdiag.txt. Save it, then open it. Do a ctrl+a to select all text. Then ctrl+c Paste the result back here and I'll take a look for you. You may find, in the interim, that clicking on the sound tab in the dxdiag tool, and lowering the Hardware Sound Acceleration level to 'Standard' is beneficial. Another thing to check, in device manager, is for any IRQ conflicts. To see IRQs select 'View' - 'resources by connection' - 'Interrupt Request (IRQ). You do not want to see your graphics card and sound card sharing a common IRQ.
  11. I second Dave's thanks. Excellent work Glenn. Lag was an issue, but could have as likely been caused by over ambitious settings on client PC's, lowering the resolution may well help for future events. Flak is a major contributor...... A great night, time passed amazingly quickly and great to see the event so well supported by both the DD's and the HH's. ~S!~ to all!
  12. Good old Ethereal. So the PC was a Zombie? Sods...
  13. @JensenPark: http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist ... sklist.htm Looks pretty useful.
  14. If you email me your CH profiles I will gladly take a look. I have Pro throttle, Quad Throttle and Pro Pedals coupled with a MSFFB2 stick. I can very likely create the profiles for you that you will be able to use and print using the CH map printing utility

    TrackIR

Sged, I don't think you will find them in stores....I could be wrong. V3 can be expanded with a paid add-on for the extra degrees (lean/tilt/elevate). V3 will more than fit your requirements, I don't know what the price difference between 3 and 4 for is, but if I were buying one now I'd go for V4. But I'm happy with my V3 and it's vector expansion I use a track IR hat with the vector clip, it has 3 reflectors arranged in a triangular array. White LED is a very good idea! A powered USB hub is easiest, a pci add-in card is best.
  16. I don't think it has been updated, last time I used it to 'recover/convert' an on line mission it barfed. Could be down to the nut that was loose 'twixt keyboard and chair though....
  17. Ok Angus, I'll put together a list for you, I'll compile it from the Staples online listing if they have one Does Dawn's MAC have an Airport wireless adapter too, or will you need to get a linksys/netgear/whatever adapter for that too? Feel free to nag me too, by email if you wish, in view of your expected connection date. I should find time to do this by end of UK play on Monday as I have sod all else to do apart from re-discovering my wife Jane
  18. Firstly: Will it be cable or ADSL? I recommend Linksys routers/adsl modem/routers as they have a good company behind them (Cisco) and work well. You need to consider the range, how far from the cable/ADSL connection will your gaming PC be? As it's an older house you need to be mindful of signal degradation through the walls, and any extensions or arches that have been put in will be steel reinforced concrete lintels or RSJ beams. These will have an adverse effect on signal range too. On the PC end you need to buy a USB 2.0 wireless adapter, preferably one with a cable that is designed for a desktop (as opposed to a laptop which tend to resemble a pen drive). You have flexibility with the placement of these adapters and can therefore optimise your signal. An example is my sons adapter (a netgear one) if I lower it two feet the signal goes from poor (6Mbs) to excellent (24+Mbs)...just two feet closer to the router downstairs can make a huge difference! Generally it is best to buy stuff from a single manufacturer, so all Linksys for instance. However if someone has found particular models work well together than that will work for you too. Once the hardware is installed and the network is working you then need to lock it down from a security point of view: 1. Disable SSID broadcast after changing it from manufacturers default. 2. Enable WEP or WPA. 3. Implement MAC filtering so only pre-defined clients are allowed access to your network. I can put together a shopping list for you, and based upon that a guide to setting it all up if you want
  19. I'm in and will 'balance' - no preference either way
  20. Very good Waldo, 'so maneuverable you can fly up your own ass'. His final comment 'it's a f*cked up war' and the 'official translation' was a peach! Thanks for the effort in conversion and posting mate
  21. I had to contribute too This thread is well worth a read, some wicked humour out there Sorry Beebop, I know you posted these screenshots and photos of your rig on our private forums, with strict instructions they should not be circulated, but I felt it was in the communities interest to post one of your non-photoshopped screenies: Your missus posted this too, now I know it's only a 12th of your system:
  22. Best read I've had in a while. Granted all the other stuff I've been reading is technical white papers extorting the merits of one particular vendor over the inferior offerings of their competitors......and it was stuff I don't give a rats arse about........ Bloody good read mate, well done!
