  1. Point is, how many people are qualified to say how a P-51 handled vs an Fw190? There will be people who say, "oh, my Spitfire Vb is 10 mph slower in the dive therefore the new FM is porked", but they're only comparing the previous FM with the new one, therefore 'historical accuracy' is something of a misnomer.

All I'm saying is don't write it off before we've seen it, reviews are subjective, the only point of view that matters (to you) is your own.

Compare this with the whiners over at 1c and the Ubi forums when 4.10 introduced 'realistic' bombing - I definitely wanted to shake one or two of them warmly by the throat while yelling "HAVE YOU EVER DROPPED A BOMB FROM A TEMPEST?? NO?? WELL STOP F**KING COMPLAINING THEN!!!"

  2. Link is here.

Sorry, it's memtest not memcheck, this link will take you to the download page. My preferred way to use it is to download the .iso and burn it to a CD. Then boot the machine from the CD. Memtest will run automatically. Simples!

  3. Rog is absolutely correct CG, SSD drives are great for large file transfers, but not so hot for the small ones. I also think I read somewhere that the disk degrades quite quickly too?

If you really want a high speed drive look into SATA III or a Velociraptor (Western Digital).

Don't assume all your gaming data will be OK because it's on a separate drive. IL-2 is OK, because all the game files are held in one folder and there are no entries in windows files, but that's not necessarily the case with all games. You may get away with it, but equally, you may not.

  4. Hi CG, just a couple of points -

    1. It's very, very, very unlikely that you'll be able to swap boot drives from one machine to another and get them to work especially in this case where you're radically changing the architecture. I've never found a foolproof way to do it and the voices have managed to convince me it's not a good idea in any case so I just reinstall each time.

    2. Definitely increase the memory - Don't forget that over 3.5(ish) GB of memory cannot be accessed by 32-bit OS's due to limitations of the address bus, so If you're going for 4GB (or more) then you need to be going for the 64-bit option. Good news there is that the retail box versions of Win 7 come with both versions (although you only have one licence)

    3. There is no direct upgrade path from XP to 7 so, yes, you'll have to do a fresh install and you'll be reinstalling your software (if you've got IL-2 saved on a separate drive you won't need to install that). See Point 1.

OK, technically three points but meh.

  5. :iagree:

I'm with Shadrach and don'f forget either that this is exactly the same complaint levelled at ROF when it originally came out with two aeroplanes and a host of niggles - mainly that it wouldn't run on anything remotely not 'top-end' and furthermore, the developers then chose to release the game again with the issues resolved thereby getting their beta testers (me included) to pay for it twice. Brilliant if you can get away with it (that said I will concede that the support for the game from that point on has been very good).

I believe we can be reasonably confident though that Oleg and co will not be following this path, so we can look forward to updates which will improve the playability of the game and as the community upgrade their machines over time (just as with the 'old' IL2) we will see faster frame rates and fewer glitches.

  6. When using two separate joysticks, it's a good idea to redo your axes assignments from scratch. So delete pitch and roll axes and assign them to the msffb. I don't understand why you wouldn't want the rudder on the twist axis unless you already have pedals. If you do though, delete the yaw assignment and reassign using the pedals. Ditto the throttle. Il2 will sort out which joystick it is automatically. For example, my sidewinder is stick 1, the x52 throttle quadrant stick 2 and the button bay prototype, stick 3. It all works nicely together.

  7. Ah that explains why they got rid of it. Could never understand why they wouldn't want an orignal DX combat veteran on their books. I guess it was a part swap for Velma or the Sea Fury?

    Still, the more the merrier.

  8. Very nice BB, the Horsemen were a highlight a couple of years back, so it'll be good to see them again.

Although it'll be nice to see 'Tear back at DX, in a way I would have liked her to have retained the markings she had while over here, especially since they were the ones she'd had since her combat career at DX during the war.

  9. During my time with the DDz, I've gone from a Saitek Cyborg 3D to the X52 Pro and now the Sidewinder 2 (although I'm still using the X52 throttle). While I love the X52 for it's myriad of buttons and things and being well put-together, the Sidewinder is edging it at the moment. I REALLY like force-feedback. Once the button box is built and I've got the facilities built into it that I miss from the X52 then I'll be happy (for a while).

P.S. Neither of the old sticks failed, in fact I think the Cyborg went to Australia!

  10. I've not noticed this Arthur but I suspect the drop in framerates is due to more work having to be done to show the engine problems (flames, oil etc) and would certainly explain why they shoot back up again when the problem is resolved. Currently I'm running little other than 100% mixture on the Spit but I've not really tried much high altitiude stuff.

Ditto with the bombers, bear in mind that the game is not fully optimised for multi-core processors (yet) and as such the additional load caused by having to display other objects moving independantly of AND relative to the position of your aircraft when they all have additional levels of animation and general detail perhaps it's not that suprising that the frame rates can drop dramatically in combat

Don't forget that we're almost all running uber machines for 1946 due to it being years old, but those same machines (for the most part) a) aren't so hot compared to CloD's requirements and B) aren't being fully utilised by the software in any case.

I hope these little niggles are just a question of time before they're sorted.
