    XP 64 Bit

I'm using the 9.1s. There are some graphical anomalies with them (not so evident in IL2 I am pleased to say) and performance wise they seem very good. You are using the 8.8s by the looks of it, judging by the file version of ati2dvag.dll.. We are quite limited on the version we can use with the 4870 series card, so far the 9.1s have proved to be the best for me in respect of IL2.
  2. Make sure the old CDRom drive is empty before you remove it! Other than that, check that the new one is an IDE drive and not SATA (I managed to buy a SATA DVD drive by accident - not that it mattered). OEM drives tend to come without burning software, so you will have to source this independently. Nero (http://www.ahead.de) is very good a reasonably priced. If you just want CD/DVD burning then try http://www.poweriso.com Has advantages of being light, burns and creates images and also has a virtual cd driver to mount ISO files with.
  3. Looks good Jim!
  4. Pretty much yes. After you have applied the Mods/Patches you will have an identical version to the retail DVD version after patching. The DL version had (or at least did) a slightly different IL2FB.exe due to copy control IIRC.
  5. Wow. That is a mighty fast rig M8. My bloody AMD bag of shite barely scrapes past 800 odd, disgusting considering it's a 6000+ with 4Gb RAM. AMD are losing the plot, although I suspect a Phenom (larger cache) would fare better, but would still not be in the same league as those new Intel i7 monsters..
  6. Great! Shame that your manual does say, in two distinct places, that you must use A1 and B1 for dual channel/two DIMMs, and that all other combinations are for Triple Channel. Got to love their Technical Author....or not!
  7. May not be your bag Streaks, but $180 for Vista is a big bite considering it is about to be phased out (or bypassed as is the case) by Windows 7 which is getting some good reviews. An alternative for you, but it takes slightly more work to get it right, is to download the free trial of Windows Server 2008 and convert it to a Workstation OS (there is a free utility to do this and it will also assist in extending the 60 day trial period to 240 days). I'm using it now with great results, much more responsive than Vista Ultimate I have on same PC and on a par with XP64.
  8. Well the version of English that Asus wrote the manual in does tend to imply you can run dual channel with 2 sticks... However the selling point of this new architecture is the triple stick setup... houseofhelp, the corsair forum, may shed more light for you m8.
  9. Best 64Bit Firewall is Kaspersky (thanks Jabo) Comodo does a 64Bit version, but I found it randomly crippled comms with other systems on my network, YMMV. @ GEC I think part of the issue here is it is an i7 board that does triple channel, but Andrew is trying to get Dual Channel to work, I'm not particularly up to speed with Intel hardware.. But there is no harm in trying alternate slots. Straw grasping time...which chipset drivers did you installm8, the ones off your driver CD, the ASUS site or the ones from Intel Chipset Downloads? I would go for the latter. Yes the BIOS does not care what OS you are running (there is a Plug and Play OS option that hands interrupt assignment for attached devices over to the OS but this won't affect your memory issue IMO) - I think you are being asked for the OS because of the 32Bit memory limitation. You need to state your issue is: 1. RAM installed in slots A1 and B1 2. Post screen indicates 2040Mb installed 3. CPU-Z indicates 4096 installed 4. 64Bit OS indicates 1.99Gb installed 5. Make and model of mobo and BIOS version 6. Make and model of RAM Good luck m8, and let us know how you get on (obviously continue to post questions here )
  10. Scratching my head here now M8, this is pretty Kookie (sp?) stuff. Getting into realms of contacting Asus Tech Support I think, you have followed the steps outlined in the manual and put the sticks in the right slots. You probably already know this useful; resource: http://www.corsairmemory.com/configurator/product_results.aspx?id=763615 (Corsair's own memory selector for your mobo) Their forums are excellent too: http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=130
  11. OK I'm a little confused (for a change
  12. Err. You have a 4870X2 card right? And that has 2Gb DDR3 memory, that is where your RAM has gone! This is the memory mapping limitation of 32Bit XP you are experiencing. When you get your XP64 you will see your RAM again
  13. My experience of drivers and the 4870 is that there is a minimum driver version that supports the card. Attempts to use earlier drivers (via the atiogxl.dll in the IL2 folder trick) resulted in IL2 being unplayable, even the menu was almost impossible to use. So I would venture that the Omega drivers will not work with your card. You can tell which drivers support your card by referring to the release notes with each driver, available on the ATI site. 2Gb RAM missing - so it does not show in post? If that is the case then a BIOS update may remedy this, are the sticks all the same make/speed?
  14. Which drivers are you using? With my ATI 4870 and the latest 9.1 cats Perfect works well, although I have noticed some anomalies (JP's screen shot of his downed 109 have what is best described as moving artefacts in the shadow areas). Mind you my card is a single card, are you using Crossfire? Does disabling Crossfire help? It is possible, as Knight said, to use the atiogx.dll from an early Catalyst driver pack, I have not found it to be successful with the 4870 though - it does work with 4850's which is odd.
  15. Probably has, we just failed to notice...
  16. Nice find! I got it to check my drivers too, and it gave me this nice little report: Driver Status Computer Information Reports it as Server 2003, as it is XP64, and made a mistake about video RAM - 1Gb but later it says 512Mb. Impressed!
  17. Sorry Jim, only just seen this.. My his system is a mess isn't it! First thing is the chipset drivers: http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/via_hyperionpro_v522a.zip You may have to force the CPU to AGP Controller as we did with Tonar's system Linked here for you. Realtek Soundcard: Depending on which model it is (got a mobo make and model?) Choose from 2, 6 or 8 Channel to match his sytem Graphics driver is just not there...but I know you know where to go for that! Once chipset is updated Device manager/dxdiag should at least know what make and model it is now.
  18. Good find Snacko! XP, XP64 and Vista (32 and 64 bit I think) compatible too!
  19. Fireman you should be ashamed of yourself: No link?!?!
  20. Ditto - but advanced view didn't show how the monitors were used, as in 'Extended' vs Clone vs. Split
  21. To post images: 1. Get a copy of Irfanview (it is free) if you don't already have one: http://irfanview.com/ Get the Plugins too, very handy! 2. Install it and the plugins. 3. Now when you take a screenie (use ALT+Prt Scr to capture only the active window not the whole desktop ) run Irfanview and do a CTRL+V to past screenie in. 4. If you only want a part of screenie (you forgot to press ALT key for instance) use the mouse to drag a box around the area you want, then click 'Edit' > 'Crop Selection' It will now crop the image. 5. Save the screenie as a Jpeg file. 6. Attach it to a post here as per this screenie:
  22. +1 Main screen is 1680 x 1050 @ 60Hz LCD and second is 1600 x 1200 @ 75Hz Double click the ATI Icon in the system tray, select under the View menu (if in advanced view) 'Basic View' and you get this: Select 'Extended Desktop'
  23. On it's own, without the (modified) September and December updates?
  24. +1 Also as part of the troubleshooting exercise it is safe to say that removing extraneous applications/devices (especially if they feature in the BSOD as KMixer did) is a primary step. As I see it we have the following questions outstanding: 1. Did a Disk Check succeed, and did it find issue? 2. Voltages are they monitored and how do they look. 3. Temperatures - as above. DFI boards are good, I have 3 of them (AMD platform though) here. Monitoring utilities are good too. DFI SmartGuadian Download
