Not a clue M8. When you get it you could always try this in a command prompt: netstat -an It will give you a listing of all connections you have open, 127.0.0.1 is your own system, 192.x.x.x is usually your home network, the other addresses you can look up using nslookup 'ipaddress' in another command console. Other than that...hmmmm

Need advice on screen type and resolution for a laptop.
B16Enk replied to Blairgowrie's topic in Help!!
If I were to buy a laptop purely for 'staying in touch' (so it is for email and forum lurking ) then I would go for a netbook, something along the lines of the Asus EEEPC 900. I have 2 of them, both came with Linux and both now have XP pro on them. They are my kids PCs, Jake uses his @ school and gets around 8 hours out of a single charge. The screen is small @ 9" but surprisingly readable and of a good quality. The great advantage is they are tiny, being 10" wide and 8" to 9" deep, so are eminently portable. However you probably would prefer a larger screen, and are not concerned with portability the way a 12yr old walking to and from school is..so.. The Lenovo/IBM Thinkpads have a good reputation that is deserved, using titanium for their chassis keeps the weight down, battery life is reasonable and the screens are good. Resolution wise, high resolution on a small screen sounds good, but can make for difficult reading so you will likely find that you don't use it's full potential and run it at a more comfortable 1280 x 800. Consider the weight too, as I am sure you know a couple of kilos can soon feel like you are toting a dead elephant... The Asus EEEPC range are really good and very reasonable price too @ £200 - £300 new (depending on model). -
Of course, but they are fun to use in a responsible way. I know the recent news from Germany is sobering (to put it mildly) but the vid Tribunus put up is of guns being used in a controlled and organised way.

Yes you can add another Joystick no problem. Where it gets a bit tricky is when you want to alter the response curves, because IL2 will likely still consider the X45 stick to be the primary controller. FoolTrottel (IIRC) created a utility to alter the curves on additional controllers.. It was indeed Mr FT and here is a link to IL2 Sticks: http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=332 Have you considered replacing the switch? Saitek may even send you one... alternatively try posting on the Saitek forums and someone may well be able to advise you on the process, and what switch to purchase..

I'm running ATI on 2008 too. Il2 ran fine, then when I tried again I got the desktop Now I'm getting mission loading errors, map loading failure. Try again and @ 23% I get to admire my desktop again. I suspect a Windows update, have tried turning of DEP and running SFC but to no avail. Too tired to continue, will dig more in the morning.

Have any of you other FireFox users noticed that down loads pause and a message says 'Scanning'? I noticed this on a test system without AV installed and thought 'cool FireFox has some sort of AV capability'. WRONG! It is a bug in FireFox, even with AV installed it is not a guarantee that it is scanning apparently. More info here if interested: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1117975

I am evaluating Avira now, for my XP64. Got a 90 Day trial, and so far it's fine. AV + Firewall + AntiSpam + ..: http://www.avira.com/en/products/avira_premium_security_suite.html Brando uses Avira too (and has done for 12 years IIRC).

+1 on the Alvira Being an un-employed cheapskate my Kaspersky trial expired, Zone alarm doesn't do 64Bit XP, and there was a 90 day trial of Avira suite on my PC Pro Cover Disk.. So far so good

The Firewall in 2008 is pretty good, unlike the pretender in XP as GEC so rightly says. Plus you are behind, I assume and you should confirm this, a hardware firewall in router. That said you used the magic word (or in your case strictly speaking three characters) 'Downloading'. That means that you are at risk of downloading an infected file, being reliant on the file poster having a clean system. In my experience an Antivirus solution is not going to tax a system, you can configure most to only scan when writing files as opposed to reading and writing, this will lower the system overhead. Antivirus is not a guarantee of safety, but it goes a long way towards it. More than one AV solution is a recipe for a an unresponsive system because they will fight for access rights to scan files.

Good news is you have 240 days to come up with a solution http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/how-do-i-resize-windows-partition-with-open-source-software.html

Other Firewalls differ in two respects: 1. When you turn them off they are OFF (Norton has a habit of just saying it is off...) 2. You can tell them that an application changes frequently, so it doesn't 'fingerprint' the executable and compare the fingerprint. Norton in Tonar's case correctly identified that the fingerprint had changed, sadly it wasn't user friendly enough to advise that IL2fb.exe had changed (which it would due to mod switching) and was therefore barred. I added in the 4.09 version of IL2fb.exe and that seems to have been enough to persuade Norton that all copies of that file are safe...

Welcome M8. Pleased to see you are 'Airworthy' again

I have attached my profile. It may help...who knows! Whatever.xml

Not sure this helps Pete. I just tested AAA and 6DOF is fine. Granted this is a 352/AAA install running in AAA mode. Gunsight zoom maintains head roll, it just stops the Zoom movement. Which version of TiR do you have? Mine is V3, software is 4.1 Build 36

OK Tomorrow night?
-
Absolutely. What time is convenient for you Tonar?

Our SEOW does need to be updated, and I will see if I can get that done next week. I have also created a 'SEOW in a box' - this is a web and database server that runs SEOW in a package, that does not need to be installed it just runs.. Good for SEOW Campaign building/testing/hosting.

Yes the 64bit version (curious as to why they say 'AMD64' when it is Intel too....go figure!

Hmm, I'll be interested to see those myself, might as well have the entire product range run on here! They are here Nick: http://www.dangerdogz.com/Office/Maintenance/p2_articleid/4 I'll be adding the tweaking guide over the weekend.

For anyone that is mildly interested in the process of installing, and then converting, Server 2008 I have written an article on the procedure. Remember you can download a copy for free from Microsoft, a trial version, that you can extend the trial period from 60 Days to 240 days! It is Vista but optimised and streamlined, if you have a spare partition it will happily co-exist with XP/Vista etc. The article is here: http://www.dangerdogz.com/Office/Maintenance/p2_articleid/4 I will be adding a tweaking article in the next few days too.
