I'm trying to work out just how you do that while keeping the horizon steady off the nose.

Must be all aileron/rudder but how do you keep the nose up without going neg G?

I'm not up to Bob Hoover caliber of aerobatics but I did land a gooney bird one day in Pontiac, Mi. In the middle of a blizzard with visiblity down to 1/2 mile and 4 inches of snow on the runway and 1 eng shutdown. And during the approach we lost one of our nav radios so it was kind of a fun day all around.
