1. DDz Quorum Friar Posted October 7, 2008 1. DDz Quorum Share Posted October 7, 2008 Ok, following my leaving work and me taking my PC with me, I now have a little dilemour. I have made it the main PC (the on which I fly) and have now installed the sound and graphics cards. It has the same CPU as my old Dell (2.80GHz) but has slightly more memory at1.5gb as opposed to the 1gb in the Dell. This machine, a HP d330 uT(P133T), running xp pro sp2, has the ability to take a maximum of 4gb of memory where as the Dell was maxed out at 1gb. I am using the same 17" CRT monitor and run at 600x800 resolution Now my question is.... Should I spend approx £45 pounds on expanding the PC3200 memory (which has to be done with matched pairs, the current slots are taken with 2x512 and 2x256),with 2x1gb to replace the 2x256, to 3gb or should I do something with the graphics card which is a Geforce 6800 with 128mb of on board memory. I cant do both and cant spend much more than £50-60 pounds. Any offers on what would give the best improvment per pound?
1. DDz Quorum B16Enk Posted October 7, 2008 1. DDz Quorum Share Posted October 7, 2008 1.5 Gb is ample. Money would be best spent, if it has to be spent, on an improved GPU but.... You will be spending on AGP technology Same goes with spending on RAM, that will again be old money. If it were me I would look at getting my mitts on a newer AGP offering, however nVidia AGP parts seem to be in short supply. Try these ATI cards from OverClockers: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productli ... &subid=403 Or this single nVidia offering from Scan: (geforce ECS 7300GT 512mb) http://scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=789603 All well within your budget (except the 3850 pro @ OverClockers ). I recently switched from nVidia back to ATI and I can't say I noticed any difference in quality (performance yes but I'd expect that with an upgrade). 1. DDz Quorum Friar Posted October 7, 2008 Author 1. DDz Quorum Share Posted October 7, 2008 Cheers Roger, food for thought........ Now I have to decide if the jump from the 6800 to the 7300GT is a worthwhile one.
T_O_A_D
I concur Vid card will be the biggest improvement in your case. More memory won't hurt, but you will only see faster load times, no eye candy.
Shadow
I am using the same 17" CRT monitor and run at 600x800 resolution That's the first thing I'd look at upgrading. For a reasonable price you could have a 22" flat screen running at 1680x1050.
