Disabling Non-Essential programs

I just read a post by B16Enk (Community Forum) where he recommended disabling non-essential network applications, windows update, virus update..etc. I had trouble with FS Autostart, is this another path to take down some applications kicking in and dropping me to desktop. I have to clk on the sim in the bottom tray to recover.

How and where do I disable these functions. Thanks

Fsautostart baisically automatically shuts down some services. you can choose to do this yourself by following this guide

As for programs - you can usually disable them from launching on startup by either right clicking the icon of the program in the box next to the clock and looking for properties and looking for an option to disable or type msconfig in run box and look in startup tab see explination here

there is also a program called enditall which does the same thing as fsautostart so you could try this but it is shareware now.

One word of warning- before tweaking back up your system !!!!!!!!

make sure you only disable those programs and services that you know are not important - do not disable your firewall or antivirus if you are online

Windows update can be configured to 'advise' of updates but not download:

Control Panel -> Security Center -> Automatic Update

Select 'Notify me but don't download updates'.

This will then put a yellow shield in your system tray when updates are available.

Antivirus, most packages can be configured to do the same.

Messenger programs, Yahoo, MSN Gtalk etc. I would sign out and exit those.

Often overlooked, some have Disk De-fragmentation programs that will work in the background when they think the system is idle.

Disk Keeper seems to regard low disk IO as an indicator of an idle system and will commence a defrag whilst IL2:FB is running.
