  1. Likewise, nice mix of planes you had there - it's been ages since I last saw an AN-2 (largest single-engined biplane ever - apparently) Jabo
  2. Personally, I think nVidia cards are fab Kimo, I've used them for ages now and will in all probability continue to do so into the future. As far as I'm concerned, I've always found them to be really good - fast, reliable and reasonably straight-forward. The lack of issues with drivers is also a big plus - each time a new one comes out, I chuck it onto the machine and everything runs as it should. Windows 7 even handles the download for me...doddle. Only slight downside is the fact that they do run quite hot so you need to consider the cooling, but that may well be the same for ATI. Jabo

Yep, the Duo scores 1149 against the Q6600 (1215). The bizarre thing is that the processor test shows a 30% improvement in performance, but everything else takes a hit. If nothing else changed I should be seeing a 10% overall improvement, rather than the 5 and a bit I have. It's not so much the processor which is intriguing me, but why everything else is worse. Jabo

Point taken m8, but why have other component tests now got worse scores Jabo P.S. The new proc is not really for IL2, but I have an eye on other games and (of course) SoW - Two weeks apparently.
  5. lol, that must have stung the following day.

Oh, lord, you invite new people in and they seem all nice and sensible and stuff, and then within a couple of months they're as bonkers as the rest of us.
  7. 'multi-coreness' - lol. Thanks chaps, unfortunately very under the weather today, so birthday drinkies have been postponed. Still, got some new books to read so being ill has it's advantages Means I might also have the chance to get to the bottom of Sid's processor problem (more later ) Jabo P.S. wibble.
  8. Pond (lol - more like a lake) and new lawn looking good Jim. Does Helen have plans for getting you decorating indoors during the winter? Jabo

Well, the 6600 gives me a whole 5.6% improvement in Passmark (whoopy-doos), but here's an interesting thing, the CPU test reports a 30% improvement which is probably fair, but all the other component tests (memory, gfx etc) give a worse score than with the old CPU in - up to a whopping 20% (Worse!!!) for the 2d gfx test. Why is this? (Oh and Kev, we were wrong, it's not power related) Jabo
  10. ~S~ Condor, welcome aboard. You'll find that the settings we generally fly are a little less stringent than UKDed 1, we normally have externals on for example. As far as training is concerned, best to jump in and learn the hard way, unless you have enough spare time to enrol over at JointOps (some of their instructors fly here - see Painless). It's still learning the hard way tho - lol. You'll need a few addons for the game, but the patriarch should be about with the necessary links before long. Jabo
  11. Likewise Jim, that could have been nasty. On a safer subject, how's the grass?

Thanks Kimo Both chips are rated at 2.4GHz, so there's not much difference other than the additional cores. I think I'll benchmark the rig now, then chuck in the 6600 and benchmark it again. I don't think the MSI board gives me anything I don't currently have on the Gigabyte other than eSATA (which I don't use) and half the number of USBs on the back (which I do) so assuming the 6600 is good then that board and my C2D will be the basis of a new rig for the GF. Jabo
  13. Hey chaps, I've just come into the (legitimate) possession of an MSI P7N Platinum mobo based on the nVidia 750i chipset, it's also got an intel quad-core processor (Q6600) installed. The question is this...Do I swap this board/processor with my EP45-DS3 Gigabyte & its Core 2 Duo or do I swap CPUs or do I do neither?
  14. Yep, that was JR. As a fairly frequent Radio 4 listener, I happened to hear that on the radio a couple of days back. Interesting to see video footage as well. Jabo
