I wonder if those flashes were the photo-flashes (can't recall the exact name...but I've read a lot of how they had to fly straight/level for a bit after the bomb release so that they could record the drop when the flash bomb went off) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Administrators Share Posted January 3, 2010 You've got the name right JP, yeah, they had to continue on course for 30 seconds after the drop so they would get a shot of their bombs exploding. Failure to do so once led to some tough questions for the crew back at base, failure twice would mean being branded LMF and demoted to the lowest possible ranks including loss of commission for officers. Bomber Command were tough on what was viewed as cowardice to the point where there were several recorded instances of men taking their own lives rather than have LMF stamped on their records.
