BBloke
Here's a short clip from a game. Can you name the game it was taken from?
Rattler
I can't play it. What codec do I need?
GreyKnight
I would say... Silent Hunter IV?
BBloke
You'll need XviD or DivX to view. www.xvidcodec.com
cannon_fodder
As the model is more detailed than the GWX2 mod for SH3 and the ship is flying the japanese flag it has to be Silent Hunter 4.
BBloke
Correct to you both. Silent Hunter 4. (with a couple of mods I believe)
GreyKnight
I'll try and grab a picture from an old game tonight too.
1. DDz Quorum Friar Posted February 6, 2008 1. DDz Quorum Share Posted February 6, 2008 I have often thought about the Silent Hunter series, but somehow running a german submarine sinking royal navy ships when my dad was in the navy just does not seem right and often ran the risk of u-boats himself, indeed he told me once of a situation where there were survivors in the sea from another vessal that had been hit but they could not stop because they knew that there was a u-boat in the area. However if there is a pacific version running a us sub sinking japenese tonnage, that may be different.
GreyKnight
Friar, Silent Hunter III is German U-Boots against allied shipping. Silent Hunter IV is an American sub against the Japanese, so you're in luck there.
cannon_fodder
I have often thought about the Silent Hunter series, but somehow running a German submarine sinking royal navy ships when my dad was in the navy just does not seem right and often ran the risk of u-boats himself, indeed he told me once of a situation where there were survivors in the sea from another vessal that had been hit but they could not stop because they knew that there was a u-boat in the area. However if there is a pacific version running a us sub sinking japenese tonnage, that may be different. I had the same nagging thoughts as I had relatives who were in the royal navy. And if you think about it you are sending sailors to the bottom But playing the game does give you an insight to how brave these men were and how difficult their job was. Don't forget that allied bomber command spent the war either indirectly or directly targeting civilians. All it brings home is war is an appalling waste of brave men on both sides If you want to explore submarine warfare the atalntic was the difinitive place. The action was consentrated due to the amount of shipping involved and the arms race between hunters and hunted. The pacific was just too vast and historicaly many patrols drew a blank . 1000's of miles without spotting a single ship. The campain gets easier towards the end as japan is left with just a few ships . The japanese antisub weapons just did not advance at the same rate as the allies in the atlantic With the SH3 the campain gets harder and harder towards the end. in 1945 just getting home is a challenge as the allies get more armed ships , more aircraft, better weapons and tactics. If you get spotted you will be sunk. It is this stage of the campain you develop a respect for the vollenteers who lost 75% of their number
