Logos Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 ~S~ mates I have seen a few of you are model builders. I have not built a model for decades. I am kind of getting the itch to do so and would like some pointers from those DD's that enjoy this hobby. I have been looking on e-bay for a 1/32 F4U Corsair. I have seen some old Revell kits for this and wondered if it might be a good start for a modeling noob to get back into the hobby. Also, do any of you airbrush your kits. Is this a better way to get a nicer finish? Quote

Rattler Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 I use a Badger Anthem 155 airbrush, with a compressor and 5 gallon airtank, and I'll never go back to a regular brush or spray bomb. Quote

GreyKnight Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Logos, I got back in to Model Making after Rattler & Delta7 started posting their efforts. I too went straight for an airbrush and got a cheap, double-action, airbrush off eBay for £15 ($30 US) They still have similar items... Ebay Air Brush I tried the airbrush propellant cans, but they are a waste of time and money. So in the end I just went for a basic Revell compressor from my local Model shop for €99 ($148 US) But I'm sure you could find cheaper, better compressors if you look around. Since I've been painting 28mm miniatures since a teen, I use my existing Vallejo Acrylic paints for airbrushing as well. Vallejo do all the colours you need for WWII aircraft too and are fantastic paints to use for both. Edited by BBloke (tidy up the URL length) Quote

delta7 Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 here are a few sites I use for reviews, tips etc http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/ http://ipmsstockholm.org/ http://www.hyperscale.com/ aircraftresourcecenter have pictures of the kit you mentioned - go to gallery-propeller-corsair. note this will be a big piece of plastic and take up a lot of space- it also appears to be a poorly detailed kit and not up to the surface detail of more modern kits. but you might be able to get aftermarket parts for the cockpit etc to get lore detail. perhaps you might be better to start with 1/48 scale - this is a nice size to work on and you can get more modern kits- tamiya and hasegawa make nice kits I am still using brushes but plan to get an airbrush soon - the finish is so much nicer- one thing that really sets off modles is the varnish at the end - use future floor varnish to seal and get good surface for putting on decals then put a mat varnish on top to reduce sheen- future is also good for getting cockpit glass looking good and as a protection against glue smudges and paint smudges- see http://ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2005/ ... nopies.htm Quote

Logos Posted October 10, 2007 Author Posted October 10, 2007 ~S~ mates. Thanks for the support guys. Much info at those web sights D7. Perhaps 1/48 scale for starters might be a good idea. Man, those guys go bonkers detailing them planes. I think I will stick to basic elementary build to start with to see if my old fingers still work with tiny things...hmmm? Quote
