  1. Hey chaps!

    My composite Spitfire Skins have been updated to version 4:

    These now feature better (darker) camoflage and roundel colours (both were still too light/bright before) plus I have removed fuel filler caps from ammo bay doors on the wings as these are only seen on some modern restorations were auxillary fuel tanks occupy the defunct ammo bays; naturally WW2 era aircraft did not have these!

    Mission: Intercept

    Result: 

    The squadron proceeded to patrol area. As we approached White 1 called out a bogey approaching and called White 2 to break. Bogey attacked and was I/D'd as an Me 109. White 2 managed to reverse positions and swiftly dispatched the bandit.

    Squadron continued patrol and a few minures later Red 2 spotted a gaggle of ~10 Me 109s North of the target. Squadron bounced the e/a and enagaged. 8 e/a destroyed. Good cross cover and call outs. 

    1 friendly aircraft destroyed, 1 friendly aircraft force landed damaged near Euskichen.

    Mission: Attack Dusseldorf Rail Yards.

    Result: Heavy damage.

    The successfully squadron dive bombed the target, three large buildings destroyed/heavily damaged and several rail cars destroyed. Red 1 engaged AAA guns immediate SW of target destroying both.

    Proceeded South down the Rhine looking for targets of opportunity. Much heavy flak South of Cologne. Red 1 slightly damaged.

    South of Bonn the squadron spotted and engaged a 5+ Me 109s heading west below and ahead. Squadron bounced the e/a and  shot down 7 in total. Good cross cover and call outs. 

    1 friendly aircraft force landed damaged near Euskichen.

    Mission: Attack Enemy Artillery position.

    Result: Artillery position wiped out.

    The squadron spotted and engaged a pair of s/e e/a just as we crossed the lines; however on setting up to bounce this formation a second group of 3x E/A were spotted closing on White Flight. White Flight ordered to continue pressing the attack on the first formation and Red flight instructed to reverse heading and attack the new formation. Red Leader was jumped by a 6th unseen a/c and took damage to his empennage but a/c was still controllable and fightable. Red Leader ordered all bombs jettissoned and a general melee ensued. All s/e e/a were eventually destroyed, with note being made of the heroic actions of White 1, Lt Barry Cuda; he destroyed 2 e/a before tragically colliding with a 3rd.

    Red 3 & 4 pursued a bandit to the SE and downed it, but on attempting to rejoin were engaged by a single twin-engined type identified as an ME-410. This was swiftly dispatched, however not before damaging Red 3s port motor and forcing him to abort the mission with Red 4 covering.

    Reds 1 & 2 and White 2 pressed on to target and strafed successfully. White 2 was hit by machine gun fire whilst attacking and was leaking coolant form the port radiator; despite this he pressed home the attack on 3 more occasions. With target destoyed and two of the 3 aircraft damaged the remainder of the formation set out for home.

    Red 4's adventures continued when he engaged a group of e/a alone over the airfields NW of Volkel, damaging an Ar 234 before suffering heavy damage at the hands of their escort. He however force landed safely on a single engine at Volkel - though his one good engine expired as he crossed the threshold!

     

    2 friendly aircraft force landed damaged Volkel, 2 friendly aircraft force landed damaged Venlo, 1 friendly aircraft landed undamaged Venlo ; 1 friendly aircraft destroyed.

      Known Issue - If you have an IAM selected (JDAM, JSOW, SLAM, SLAM-ER etc), create a ground designation and then select a freefall bomb, cluster bomb or LGB, MAN (Manual) targeting mode will be selected, instead of AUTO. It is not possible to exit MAN mode, unless you un-designate and re-designate, with the freefall bomb selected.

    • Added additional elements to Controls Indicator for FMC/SCAS functions:
      • When a hold mode is engaged, a blue outline will be displayed around the SAS authority region within the corresponding flight control axis that the hold mode is active.

    Missile launch and symbology logic:

    • Implemented missile masking by aircraft body for radar missiles.

    • Adjusted missile maximum launch distance calculation (green dot in sight).
    • Added automatic launch for radar missiles. When this option is selected, the missile fires automatically when getting within missile range of the target.
    • Added 1 second wait for radar launched missiles.
    • Added missile light symbology, flashing when a launch order is given.
    • Added disappearing missile light symbology after IR launch.
    • Added full functionality of Magic/SW on switch.
    • Updated Magic missile launch delays: 1.8 s for Magic 1, and 0.8 s for Magic 2.

    Mechanical clock:

    • Fixed the non-rotating clock winding/setting knob when it is set by keyboard/joystick.
    • The clock winding/setting knob rotation is not limited by one full turn now, when it is in Clock Set mode.
    • Fixed the inability to rotate the clock winding/setting knob counterclockwise, when it is in Clock Set mode.
    • Updated the clock time set function. Added accelerated input from keyboard/joystick when the key is pressed continuously.
    • Implemented the clock wind up function. The clock spring has a total capacity of 2 days of operation. It is initialized as half wound up (one day of operation).
    • Added a clicking sound to the knob, when the clock is wound up.
    • Fixed mechanical clock accuracy issues. Added clock time error, when the clock spring is almost fully discharged.

    Landing gear fixes:

    • Gear lever is no longer moveable with weight on wheels.
    • Damaging the landing gear now can cause damage to the antiskid and hydraulic systems.
    • Trying to raise the aircraft from the ground with the gear will result in it getting stuck.
    • Fixed bug that only allowed retraction of the gear on the ground when the override button was released.

    FM changes:

    • Adjusted payloads lift coefficients.
    • Tweaked elevator authority.
    • Changed elevator starting position on the ground.
    • Adjusted behavior of the yaw damper in the transonic region.

    Other fixes and improvements:

    • Added control surface test.
    • Added a special option to select the volume of the fuel counter noise.
    • Change default ALR-300 voice messages language to Spanish, when 'Native' cockpit language is selected in Options. French voice messages will be heard only when 'France' is selected as the aircraft country.
    • Added 'Disable Voice Message System subtitles' to Mirage F1 Special Options submenu.
    • Autopilot integral commands no longer update during active pause (solves the issue with jumps after having the AP on in active pause).
    • Corrected throttle animation bug.

    • Radar altimeter. Radar altimeter now works on roll angles up to 120+ deg when pitch angles are between 35 deg on alt above 3000 feet and when pitch angles are between 45 deg and alt is below 3000 feet. Otherwise maximum roll angles are reduced to 15 deg. Radar altimeter ceiling is now 5000+ feet, not 5000 straight.
    • A10C. ARC-164 status button. Fixed, reverted wrong stuff from ARC-164 indication. Minor: aligned ARC-210 indication.

  10. Hi Dave,

    1) As for your system specs:

    CPU = Great! Especially with the recent multi-threading release. 

    RAM = Below average. 16GB is a sub-optimal. DCS prefers 32GB and is happiest on 64GB.

    GPU = Below average. It'll run but you'll have to dial back the eye-candy. If you have the facilities to get hold of even a sound 2nd hand 1080ti then that'd be better.

    DCS is free to download so you can try it out before committing any funds; I would say get it just to see how well it will run on your system.

     

    2) Covered by the others, but I'll add that most days we utilise the DDz server dynamic dogfight mission; lots of target options to suit various aircraft and skill levels. We occasionally run a co-op but generating a mission of that ilk to cover all the varied aircraft types/capabilities etc can be a tricky and time consuming for the builder so they can be few and far between.

    However, what you often end up doing on the DF map is several different pilots choose a particular target and attempt to us the various capabilities of their chosen mount to run a coordinated strike package; one group take out or reduce the enemy ground air defences, whilst another group attempt to keep the enemy interceptors at bay as yet another group go for the main ground target. It becomes a mini-coop in a DF server.

    F-86 is a good choice but an F-5 might be a better choice to play more competitively with the big jet boys. As Crash says the A-4E mod is a great lead in aeroplane with systems not much more complicated than WW2 era, but still a potent little ground attacker with the ability to carry a few Sidewinders for shits and giggles - plus, it's free! You'd need it to install it to join us on server anyhow, so... 

     

    3) Single Player varies greatly depending on the module. All come with a variety of tutorial missions, many with a decent selection of instant action and a number of single missions. Campaign availability varies more; some come with 12-15 mission campaigns to fly bundled with the module (F-15C, A-10C), some even have two (F-14), some only have campaigns available as payware ($12-$15) DLC additions (Spitfire, Mustang, P-47) and some have no campaigns at all.

    However, Eagle Dynamics are working on a Dynamic Campaign Generator engine that will hopefully cater to many or all of the available modules, though the ETA for the release of this is yet to be confirmed.

    There is also a vast repository of user made missions (including campaigns) available for download, for free, from EDs website where they host User Files, which also includes skins, mods and useful documentation; there are gems and there is dross there though so it's worth taking time to sort the wheat from the chaff.

  13. For those wondering what kind of performance gains we can expect when DCS finally is able to push their multi-threading engine update:

    IronMike (of Heatblur, developers of the Viggen and F-14) has his grubby mits on developer version of the engine; he stated on Discord:

  14. As if DCS wasn't complicated enough...

    Ran into an issue with Colin t'other night when he was beetling around in his tank calling out target positions and lasing for me to deliver 1,000lb high-explosive gift baskets. Some connected but some did not despite confirmation and reconfirmation of the given coordinates.

    So...

    Turns out there are at least 4 different ways of representing Lat Long coordinates.

    1. Degrees, Minutes and Seconds (DMS)

    HDDD° MM' SS" : N 43° 40' 56" x W 116° 17' 14"

    a more precise version of this is Degrees, Minutes and Decimal Seconds (DMDS)

    HDDD° MM' SS.ss" : N 43° 40' 55.87" x W 116° 17' 14.12"

     

    2. Degrees & Decimal Minutes (DDM)

    HDDD° MM.mmm' : N 43° 40.931' x W 116° 17.235'

     

    3. Decimal Degrees (DD)

    The format of the coordinates can be cycled in the F-10 map by pressing, by default, [LALT]+[Y]. The default format can be selected in the Options menu (more information in the DCS manual, page 46).

    The following are the available coordinate formats in DCS:

    Precise Lat/Long: very precise representation of the coordinates, up to 1/100 of second by reporting decimal seconds as well;

    LatLong DMS: discussed above;

    Metric: absolute X/Y coordinates;

    LatLong DDM: discussed above;

    NATO MRGS: acronym for Military Grid Reference System.

     

    Depending on what airframe/vehicle you are in/talking to will define which need to be used.

    F-14 crews want DMS (DD°MM'SS")

    F/A-18C crews want DMDS (DD°MM'SS.ss")

    F-16 crews want DDM (DD°MM.mm')

    Mirage 2000 crews want DD (DD.ddddd°)

    A-10Cs have the ability to choose IIRC and are therefore the most flexible.

     

    There are conversions but I have to go now so will talk about them later.

    For now just be aware the target coordinates you give/take may not be the ideal format for your/their system to handle.
