Here are my favourite 3 books - reviews copied from my posts at airwarfare 1) Book : First Light Author : Geoffrey Wellum Pages : 338 Photos : 39 Published : 2002 This is my favourite biography of an RAF pilot in WW2. It describes Geoffrey Wellum’s career from his induction at seventeen, through his training, his active service of two full tours; including the Battle of Britain, over 100 fighter sweeps over France and then Malta. The story is different, from the usual pilots profiled, in that Geoffrey was not an ace , although he is obviously a good pilot, being chosen as wingman by Brian Kingcombe his No 92 squadron CO. So the book is not full of kills but does describe very well the thoughts and fears of a pilot. The first third of the book concentrates on his training and his fears that he will not be good enough to make the grade, it is 100 pages in before he flies a spitfire, but his descriptions of his training and flying are interesting and informative; throughout the book you sense his feelings of joy and sometimes terror in flight. The rest of the book deals with his missions, including one thrilling chase of a Ju88 in near zero visability, and the pilots he met and flew with. His writing style is fluid and easy and I guarantee that most will not put it down once they start. I got a real feeling of understanding and of almost being there with him during reading this book. I really recommend that anyone interested in pilot stories from this period should pick up a copy. 2) Book The Big Show Author : Pierre Clostermann Pages : 345 Photos : 34 Published : 1951; new unabridged version 2004 This is arguably the best biography and story of a pilot in WW2. Pierre Clostermann balances narration and description to give a full insight into this period , the pilots, aircraft and missions they flew. With such an action packed career it takes only 28 pages to arrive at Biggin Hill ,just after the Battle of Britain, and from then on Pierre Closterman takes the reader through the highs and lows of fighter sweeps over France in Spitfires and then ground support missions in Tempests. In all nearly 400 missions including over 30 kills. Pierre faithfully kept a diary throughout his career and the book has an intimacy that really grabs the reader. He was studying for a degree in aeronautical engineering in America when war broke out and so is able to bring a fine engineering and analytical viewpoint to the aircraft he flew, and fought, however at no time does this get dry or boring; rather it offers added insight into his story. This book really opened my eyes to the scale of loss of RAF pilots at the latter part of the war who flew Typhoons and Tempests in ground support missions and against the remaining pilots in the Luftwaffe. And especially to the bravery and courage all pilots must have had to show in the face of continuing losses and death of comrades. A well balanced viewpoint and strong narration makes this a strong recommendation. 3) Book: Alert In The West (I Fought You From the Skies) Author : Willi Heilmann Pages : 159 Photos: 16 Published 1955 I had never heard of Willi Heilmann, but picked up this book after reading Stigler’s recommendation from here http://www.naysayers.com/9jg52/9jg52.html and I am very glad I did. When it arrived I was disappointed- only 159 pages? But these are packed with aerial combat. The book covers a relatively short time period, from just after the Normandy Invasion until the end of the war, and, giving little background, plunges you straight into the pilot’s experiences flying with JG54 in FW190s; first in the A series and then the D9 variations. The majority of the book is his descriptions of aerial combat, and tells the grim story of fighting, retreating and loss as an army degenerates in defeat. The action and pace is driven and relentless. The author has strong opinions on his machine, how it matches up to his opponents and on the pilot’s fate as the experienced fliers are lost to be replaced increasingly with those straight out of training. His views and experiences flying FW190s make an interesting comparison with some views expressed on the IL2 forums … .but I wont spoil this for you- go and buy the book and find out for yourself.!! I don’t think you will be disappointed.

There was a discussion on Sunday about backing up data and restoring data and Rog and I were recommending a program called Norton Ghost. As TS aint the best for discussion then Id like to repeat the benifits of this utility for the squad members 1) Ghost is a small program that takes an exact snapshop of your hard drive( or drives) at the time, this can then be used to recover your system to this exact state 2) you can copy this snapshop to another folder or partition or cd or dvd 3) you can explore the backup and recover individual files or folders e.g. il2 folder 4) the backup can be automatically updated to keep your system up to date. I would recommend that it is useful to i)copy your windows install after installing xp, service packs and fixes and drivers then ii)have a second backup once you have all your main programs installed and patched and iii)finally a third that you keep updated. It works better than system restore in that it does not eat resources and is independant of windows so if windows crashes you can restore your system IT ONLY TAKES ABOUT 10 MINS to completly get back to where you were- a working system fully up to date here is a link on using ghost - http://ghost.radified.com/ where he describes how to use GHOST and how to set up a recovery disc etc. now some might think all this backup is a bit paranoid but just wait until 10 seconds after youve done a quick tweak or patch or fix and you get the blue screen and then windows wont boot - and you look at that $1000 piece of plastic and circuit boards sitting in front of you -doing nothin - I know iv been there and it took about 2 weeks to get everything back to where it was. hope this helps

yeah mate - I have heard they sometimes came loose- aftermarket fans were used by those who overclocked as stock was borderline for this use. might have got away with just cleaning it well but $20 isnt much for peace of mind- check that power supply to card is fitted correctly and if possible put it on a single lead from power supply unit - dont branch any other connections - this helps.

I hope that we keep in touch with FI as I have never had a chance to fly with these guys and like the variety when others join in - the joints ops guys for example are a good bunch. It does make it difficult for the host as he has to ensure good missions with sufficient plane choice when large numbers turn up but weve not had a problem in the past . There was a very good turn out last night and the pings settled down after the first co-op so hopefully we wont ever have to restrict numbers. thanks for your efforts in trying to get it sorted out Jim and hopefully the next meet will be a sucess.

Im having problems with ADSL connection - the helpless desk sugests switching it off for a few hours and trying again ??!!!? mode 1 is take off for me mode 2 is flying and firing mode 3 is unusual items e.g. fire extinguishers and some views In mode 2 I have flaps on the hat 1 button push up, pull down. I have elevator trim on thumb rotary and prop pitch on second mixture is on second rotary on mode 2 + pinky - hat button 3 up is used for radiator in normal mode and supercharger in shift mode and rudder trim left and right these are the basics hope it helps

Dazza - you will need the profiling software to make it work - go to UBI forums and find a post by tully - in community help section is best - and in his sig there are links to profiles- this will help you get started. he has instructions on what button does what in the download. he has good instructions in www.airwarfare.com in guide section for setting up sticks in general good luck

Thats a bummer mate- you search for your best choice, pay yer cash, eagerly await delivery and its a dog- then to cap it all support is as much use as a fart in a spacesuit. this kind of shite makes me really mad. I hope you get it sorted, you should phone and write to the sales staff to complain about your treatment and demand that they get someone competent to support your pc, failing that threaten to return it to them and demand money back and compensation- I hope you guys have the same distance selling laws that we have so you can return and get full refund if necesserry. BTW are you running windows media centre ? XP pro is a better system for gaming- if thats the primary purpose of pc

YOuz are too good - I removed a LOT of AA as I thought it was impossible- the AA is about 1/3 of what I had in at first. I like the bombers circling :twisted: I try to put in something different- at a distance they look like a swarm of fighters waiting for you :wink: Next time Ill try to make it a bit harder :twisted: :twisted: :diabloanifire:
