Is it possible to overclock my C2Q Q6700 CPU in windows (Vista 64)?

Is this an OEM/package rig, ie: not home built?

when you look in your BIOS is the multipler locked?

Pre built system, my only input is the graphics card.

Alas it seems that my bios is locked, how hard would it be to update it?

download this ( http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php ) utility, its free, small & really handy.

look under the 'mainboard' tab & post up what it says in the 'manufacturer' box.

I believe that ASUS make a lot of the Acer mobos so its usually possible to just flash your BIOS to a newer 'unlocked' Award version and you'll be away

brilliant, thanks! can you post the CPU, memory & SPD tabs and I'll see what I can come up with for you.

Just to check - you've added in a new graphics card so you don't use the onboard GeForce graphics?

I have the latest bios file downloaded and i'm going to give it a go as instructions are included, thanks for the advice mate and wish me luck.

I'm busy most of tomorrow and out at Duxford on sunday, BTW I have seen a Griffon engined Spitfire fly over my house about 20 mins ago

It still doesnt give me a multiplier option or an advanced option in the bios.

the only changes through CPUZ are version and date but strangely the Go Stepping thing is active but it gives me no options to change it only to enable and disable.

If CPUz has updated then you've flashed your BIOS ok, which is handy for future ref.

you may need to disable the GO stepping to then let you change the multiplier, thats what I had to do with the C1E (enhanced state - ie: drop mutliplier when idle mode).

Hang fire for a day or so & I'll get a def answer for you
