Sooo, this probably isn’t so good. I received my spare GPU back from Painless this morning and thought I’d check it before putting it away again. Took out the 980, plugged the 970 in, reconnected the cables and…nothing. No lights, no fans, no POST - nothing. Unplugged the 970 and put the 980 back in…still nothing. Commencing diagnostics I swapped out the power cord - nothing. Unplugged everything that was unnecessary. Still nothing. Sooo what’s next? PSU? Board? CPU? Thoughts?

Interesting idea Col, I agree that a separate thread would be in order. Either option is fine by me Tom, would Col's idea above give you (and Pat) some extra breathing space to try and sort out the problems? We did have an issue with an overlength pilot name before - could this be something similar?

You'll probably find that they can't source the 3080ti reliably at the moment but a 3070 will have good residuals if you can get a 3080 further down the line. My only concern would be that H60 Hydro, given that it only has a single 120mm rad, I'm not sure how it will handle an 11900K especially if you plan to overclock it. Be careful, the 2018 version they are speccing here has been replaced in the last couple of years by an uprated h60 with a different rad design and better thermal characteristics It would likely be OK, but if the budget allows I'd probably be considering the H80i or H100i instead. Personally I don't like PCS, I've found their customer service to be extremely poor in the past and the parts they use for warranty repairs substandard. I know some of the guys here have used them and like them but I would steer well clear. You pays your money and you takes your choice I guess.

There were some A series 190's IIRC, the one that attacked me was I think. There were definitely some fighters that got away as there were more than 6 when we engaged.

I wouldn't resort to installing a beta version of Windows 11 in the hope it'll perform some miracle - if it does fix it you'll be no nearer understanding the problem and if it doesn't you'll be back to square one - and who's to say it's not a different problem... Assuming TPM doesn't fry my machine I should be there also.

Sooo, having downloaded the checker app and determined that my PC is not suitable for windows 10, I rebooted and went for a fettle in the BIOS. Eventually I found the TPM setting buried down in the Advanced section. If you read the blurb that goes with this, you find that this is just intel's term for TPM 2.0. so I enabled that, checked that secure boot was enabled (it was) and then rebooted. The machine took a few seconds longer to boot up the first time but returned to normal after that. Re-ran the checker and The point here is that most recent motherboards will have this in one form or other, so there should be little or no requirement to go out buying new kit for this. Assuming you may be in a position where you are running older hardware that does not support TPM, there are little plug in modules available which will provide that functionality too - According to Scan, these seem to be retailing for less than £20, but you do need to ensure that you buy the correct one. Therefore, it's unlikely you'll be in a position where a new PC is required to run 11 - and there's nothing wrong with staying with 10 (or 7 Dave😉) It's also worth noting that we're already seeing signs of an uptick in sales of TPM modules as scalpers look to cash in on those desperate to upgrade aging rigs.

TPM (Trusted Platform Module) has been a requirement on motherboards/processors since 2016 - if your board postdates that then you should be OK. Enabling Secure boot is only part of the process for resolving that issue - you also need to find the TPM settings and enable that as well. Problem is Intel and AMD call TPM by different names. Intel calls it something like 'Intel Platform Trust Technology' while AMD calls it 'AMD fTPM. It also appears that the Windows 11 checker app is buggy and reporting a lot of false negatives so may be better not to worry about it just now. MS can't force you to have Win 11 and if your mobo predates 2016 what's the likelihood that you'll still be using it in 2025 when MS stops support for Win 10?

Probably not quite yet but...Full redesign of the desktop - virtual customisable desktops too. Redesigned menu bar across the bottom. Rounded edge to the windows a la Win7, dynamic tiling, power management changes, GPU unlocks etc etc etc - there's quite a lot of stuff in there.

I likely will update too, but given that MS have set an end of service date of 2025 for Win 10, wouldn't that mean that this is complete new OS rather than an upgrade to Windows 10?

So Microsoft's claim that Windows 10 would be the last OS you'd ever need seems not to be the case. Windows 11 will launch shortly and it'll be given to Windows 10 users FOC. Who's planning to upgrade? Were you even aware of this? Are you still using Win 7? And just how badly is an OS built with gamers in mind going to screw up IL-2 and DCS?

I'm still hunting through my boxes of miscellaneous hardware but got nothing suitable yet...a treasure trove of random junk. Anyone remember eSATA? Found an expansion card for that...

Skins pack for the P38 has been uploaded to the Vault - It's basically all the 4K skins you get for the P38 using Chkskins but this does include all the personalised skins used by the squad in the P38 campaign. Might be useful for the new guys flying in the campaign.
