  2. I guess it's something to do with your router not providing an IP address, try Start-Run 'cmd' (no quotes) to get a dos window, then ipconfig /all to check if you have an ip address assigned by the router. If not try ipconfig /renew to see if the router can provide one. Let us know how you get on. ~S~ Jabo

That approach would work for me Jim, but most UK computer shops don't have their display machines connected to t'interweb - not sure about over on the contintent. You're in the UK at present Jedi? ~S~ Jabo. An alternative option would be to take a copy of a web page in html format, take it to the store on a memory stick and load it up in IE - that might be useful
  4. Not sure if this affects anyone here, but there is a possible bug in the above driver when run under Vista. My 9800GTX has been plagued by some very strange anomalies whilst using this driver. I have changed now to the v182 driver, and the problems seem to have gone. Just a word to the wise is all. ~S~ Jabo
  5. Looks like a nice machine Jim. I agree with you about the Dells, the XPS machines are great, but are on the heavy side. ~S~ Jabo
  6. Oh no, I've got plenty of tea
  7. This maybe closing the door after the horse has bolted Jim, but I'd steer clear of Lenovo, we've had a ton of trouble with them as they have no DOA policy, and the support is nightmareish. A customer recently bought 30 laptops, half of which were DOA, and three months later only half of those have been repaired...Not good. In fact we have an unofficial department policy of trying not to sell them now, the above situation is not a one-off. ~S~ Jabo
  8. Before I went to SATA HDDs, I used to use a DOS boot disk I put together years ago which did things with fdisk and format commands as a pre-install prep. That doesn't work with SATA HDDs of course, so now I just exercise considerable caution before downloading anything. ~S~ Jabo
  9. According to local history, the destruction of Roche Abbey was due to the Dissolution. Despite the Abbey passing into the hands of the Crown in 1558, the local population decided that they had first claim on the Abbey and its artefacts. Wkipedia in usual fashion states that this was done on the orders of one Oliver Cromwell, despite the fact that the Dissolution started in 1538 and he was born in 1599. Ho hum ~S~ Jabo PS - You should have dropped in for tea Jedi, you were only about 10 miles from where I live!

You are quite right m8, xh558 was the Vulcan used as at the time she was the official RAF display aircraft. If you ever get the chance to visit her at home (Bruntingthorpe near Leicester) you will also see the big model that was also used in the film. One of the reasons the pledge target was met was the mobilization of the 007 fans around the world as well as the aviation enthusiasts. ~S~ Jabo
  12. Re: DT's post about Hollywood - THIS is why I'm so worried about the re-make of the Dambusters film. The original is a classic, and if the film-makers are prepared to change the name of Gibson's dog despite it having a siginificant role in the story...well I shudder to think what else they'll be prepared to change. B-17's anyone? Jon Bon Jovi will probably be flying the lead aircraft... ~S~ Jabo P.S. On the subject of Pearl Harbour - I quite liked the historical bits, but for some bizarre reason, film-makers (in general) seem to think that a story without a romantic twist isn't a story - oh, yeah, and Ben thingy is definitely a twit. His ex is nice though.
  13. Hmm, OK, I'll look into it, but the issue I have at the moment is the noise generated by the PSU fans, I'm running twin 120mm case fans, plus the Zalman CPU cooler, and the GPU fan and together they're quieter than the PSU! Might have to look at changing that first.
  14. I've never investigated water-cooling myself - knowing how ham-fisted I am, I dread the idea of flooding the insides of my rig with coolant. On the other hand, I don't much like the stock coolers either. At present (and for the last 5 years or so) I've been using Zalman CPU coolers which run seriously quiet, and do a damn good job at the same time. My Core 2 Duo runs at sub 40 deg under the maximum load I can generate. My next purchase for the innards will be a Zalman GPU cooler (too much of a wuss to try water cooling). ~S~ Jabo P.S. Oh good, the insomnnia's kicking in again.

    Can You Help?

Oh, just a couple of other things - even if you can't afford to donate (not an unusual situation), you can still make a difference by either joining the VTST club, or signing the online petition, details of which are available at the website (see first post) ~S~ Jabo

    Can You Help?

WE'VE DONE IT!! Nearly... Below is an excerpt from the website ---- Vulcan now truly "The People's Aircraft" Thousands of pledges provide a future for the Vulcan One month ago, the Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST) had to announce that the prospects of seeing Vulcan XH558, the world's only flying Vulcan, ever flying again were looking very poor as the result of the lack of cash, and that notices had had to be given to its employees that their jobs would end on Friday 6th March With the launch of a Pledge Campaign to raise £1million, VTST based its future on the public's affection for the Vulcan and their desire to see it fly. As the deadline of the end of today approaches, the Pledge Campaign has this morning (11.00am) passed £956,835, pledged by over 9,821 supporters, and so has excellent prospects of passing its goal of £1million imminently. This is the third time in seven years that the future of the Vulcan in flight has been saved by the support of thousands of members of the public, making XH558 "The People's Aircraft". Never has one historic aircraft owed so much to so many! Sponsors provide breathing space On their own, pledges can't solve the Trust's immediate cash problem, because they each need now to be converted into cash donations. The Trust is therefore very grateful to its sponsors, Aerobytes Ltd and Judd Power, who have today committed sufficient cash to keep the Trust going for another month, allowing time for the pledges to be redeemed. As the result, VTST is delighted to announce that it is able to continue its activities on a more secure financial footing, and that the prospects of seeing the Vulcan fly in 2009 are now good. Supporters led the way forward For the past month, supporters of the Vulcan have been tireless in their fundraising activities, ranging from the cross-country Vulcan Scramble, to "Pledgathon" events across the UK. VTST is enormously grateful to all the members of the Vulcan to the Sky Club for their help. Inspiring the Young There are well over 10 million young people who have never seen the Vulcan in flight. Following the success of the Pledge Campaign, these youngsters now have an opportunity to experience this inspirational "once seen, never forgotten" sight. Because we cannot assume that all the pledges will be honoured, we are asking the the public to continue to pledge financial support, either through our website www.vulcantothesky.orghttp:// or by phone to our office on 0116 247 8145. We have demonstrated that even the smallest pledge helps, because it is people in their thousands who make the difference. Robert Pleming 6th March 2009 ---- And on a personal note - Thank you. ~S~ Jabo

  21. The six pin plug is a specific one for gfx cards. If your psu is new it should have at least one. Not sure about the eight pin one though, my card uses two six pin connectors instead.
  22. Is that 4.10 beta?

I'm with Jim on this Jedi, the Asus looks to be the better machine. I personally quite like Dell machines, and they build some very nice desktops, but I'm not sure about the laptops - We sell 'em, but I'd rather have an HP or Sony if I didn't want a gaming machine. ~S~ Jabo
  24. Yep, the Su-27 is a much bigger aircraft. The Mig also has outward canted fins compared to the Su's which are straight
