Looks pretty good.  I've updated and installed the UK scenery - a six and a half hour process:huh: - but other than a little, local trot around I've not explored it yet.

With the new height map the Jurassic Coast looks very authentic except for the freakin' trees!  Not only has it trees on the beach a' la CLoD but also trees up the cliffs!

Interesting to see Heathrow in the near distance at the end of your movie.  I wonder if Boris will one day be able to afford the courage of his convictions and build a new London Airport out in the Thames Estuary?

    6 and half hours 🤪

I probably shouldn't mention it took me less than hour!

Well I downloaded my first free mod earlier, which was very easy it transpired, the QE2 Bridge at the Dartford crossing, as the world update missed it out.

Oh and curiosity got the better of me...... because why wouldn't you try this, lol.

I like that there is a momentary pause as the game tries to decide what to do, then just goes ah well bugger it.....

  2. 402nd debrief.

It is with a heavy heart that the 402nd report the death of their squadron leader, it is a very sad day in the 402nd, his excellent leadership will be sadly missed, not to mention his laid back presence at the bar in the the mess in the evenings.

We were preceding along our patrol route, when we initially spotted 5 enemy aircraft at our low one O'clock, in two elements, a three ship and a two ship. Major Arjen Eftee led the attack and dived on the three ship, whilst the second element started to dive on the second enemy element. During the dive, the second element noticed many more enemy aircraft under the cloud coming into view  slightly behind the first aircraft spotted and pulled out of the attack to maintain altitude advantage. Alas this was to late for the lead element, and Major Arjen Eftee's aircraft was seen to impact the ground after the dive down.

Captain Kevin Fruitbat as ranking officer, took command of the remaining planes in the flight, with the first priority to extricate 2nd Lt Dennis Falcon out of a very hairy situation. Fortunately he still had plenty of energy, and so was instructed to shallow climb on what ever heading he was currently on, whilst Captain K Fruitbat and 2nd Lt Patrick Last flying as is wing, maneuvered to position themselves to cover his initial escape. It was during this point that the Captain realised his radio was fitted with a faulty radio crystal and was unable to directly talk to the 485th, and so all messages had to be relayed through a ground controller. After this work around was figured out, the 402nd urgently sent position, altitude and bandit number chasing us, requesting a heading for intercept with the 485th to give support.

The 485th replied with a heading and that they were 10 miles north of our position but lower. Not long after this, with 13 bandits confirmed in tow we sighted the 485th and quickly ascertained they were still climbing, so the order was given to turn west to give them time to get more altitude. The enemy obviously had not spotted the 485th as they turned to follow the 402nd. This allowed the 485th to latch onto the back, and battle was joined, at this point the 402nd reversed course and entered the fray.

At first the 402nd maintained combat formation and flew purely defensive against the more numerous enemy, as it appeared in the confusion they weren't fully aware that the 402nd had been joined by the 485th, until this was no longer tenable, and battle was fully joined. In the ensuing melee, the 402nd claimed 3 confirmed, with one apiece to each pilot, a Fw190D for the Captain, and Bf110's for the Lt's, along with damaging at least 3 other enemy aircraft. During the fight, both Captain K Fruitbat and 2nd Lt D Falcon received damage, but were able to continue.

Finally the last of the enemy aircraft was seen to go down, and the call to return to base was given. Shortly after regrouping, Captain K Fruitbat gave command to 2nd P Last, as he decided that his aircraft was too heavily damaged to return and land, and so looked for a area devoid of trees to bail out over. The remaining two ship returned to base, and landed safely.

Without the quick assistance given to the 402nd by the 485th, It would almost have certainly been a much bleaker day for the squadron, in what was already a bleak day.

Although crypto-currency mining is undoubtably a thing, I think the bigger issue is that the countries where there are big markets for these components currently in lockdown so instead of spending cash on holidays, days out, airshows (cough) etc people are building/upgrading PCs and so stocks get tighter as a result. Scalpers also are a problem and there is evidence that some companies are supporting this trend (MSI were called out on it recently).

The shortage of memory in the wild has lessened over recent months as factories in the Far East have come back on stream. Certainly I had no issues purchasing a 32GB kit a month ago.

Each to their own Kev, but I think 2K is too much to spend on a graphics card when soon you'll be able to spend half that and get an overclocked 3080 and have change. I'm not sure that the extra cost for the 3090 is borne out by the performance gains. What is happening for definite is that manufacturers and suppliers are hiking the prices of the cards they have which does sound rather like profiteering to me.

Fortunately. in my case my antique 980 will give me 100+ FPS in GBS at 1080p with all the bells and whistles on so although an upgrade would certainly be nice, in the current insanity it's not really a necessary (or viable) course of action. In the meantime I have a big servicing bill coming up for the car and it'll need new boots before the summer so...

The memory shortage is specifically linked to DDR6, which doesn't relate to the 32 gig you recently bought. This is the main reason for the short supply on new cards, and why NVidia also have stripped back how much is going to be on 3080 cards from there original design intention. The difference between 10 gig onboard vs 24 gig on board (plus better bandwidth) is a major plus for the 3090. Indeed a 3080 has less on board RAM than my current 2080 Ti, and is one of the main reasons why I'm not particularly considering it as increasing the supersampling ratio in VR eats VRAM, plus real world performance comparisons show a 17% performance increase with the 3080, vs 33% vs the 3090 over my 2080Ti, which isn't enough to warrant it imo for me, and I'm sure that it won't be enough for what I want to do personally re Reverb2. If it wasn't for VR I wouldn't even be considering an upgrade as my 2080Ti runs everything in 4K maxed out (nearly in DCS but everything else anyway) already.

Ultimately, what a user is prepared to pay, comes down to there own disposable finances at that time, and why they want it, the same argument could be levelled at someone who buys a Ferrari as opposed to a Ford Focus, or indeed a cheap second hand car.....

As to getting a 3080 for less than 1000 in the near future (within a year anyway), good luck with that, I hope you will be proved correct, but I sincerely doubt it. Of course we could all wait 3 years and buy a 4070, which will no doubt be better than a 3080 and a lot cheaper, tis the way of things....

I also think it is a very silly price to pay however so are quite a few non essential things. It will probably the last expensive toy I will buy and it should hold some of its value for a few years.

I just equate it to if golf was my hobby.... membership fee's, clubs etc....

@DD_Arthurprices of top end cards had more than doubled in the space of a few years pre pandemic.

Just no.  Thats just too much.  Prices and availability will come down eventually.  I don't think it's due to bit coin mining so much as a world shortage of chips at the moment.

I don't really share that appraisal (hope to be wrong) or your optimism at all I'm afraid. It is definitely due to both (specifically ddr memory shortages), and crypto currency mining is only growing. Prices have gone up @400 pounds since release.

I have a sneaking suspicion that that ground moving target mode for the ground radar would get divided by zero if that traffic was actually modelled for real :D

I have a sneaky suspicion its going to be nerfed somewhat as it gets more work, because its rather good at finding any moving vehicle out to 40 miles at the moment!!!!

    Good fun though!
