  1. The high seat , two crew and wide-track U/C are due to the firefly being designed for the navy as a "reconnaissance fighter". The Admiralty never followed up on their sucssess at Taranto (The attack that started Yamomoto thinking) and never used the carriers as strike platforms. As such the Firefly was only ment to spot ships and subs for the fleet and to chase off bombers and the odd Condor. It was never designed to face short range shore based fighters. In the east it was fitted with rockets and used as a strike aircraft and actually managed to shoot down a Ki43 "Oscar". It was reported to have good low speed handling and was much better suited to naval operations than the seafire

  8. We could use UTC / Zulu time? as used by NATO and the whole of civil aviation. or we could invent our own dog time at GMT+3 just to confuse everyone
  9. You will love this game... I've been flying IL2 for 5 years and I still get that sick feeling before a formation take off. No matter how good you set the sim will still test you I hope to back online soon so will be seeing you online
  10. That was some fantastic flying.... the skill comes in how fast he was able to react to the problem and work out how to fly with whats left. Having a petrol powered model Extra helped.... Ive seen them knife edge at low level indefinitely. Never managed it myself...usually the first time I knew it had a problem was when it hit the deck
  11. Under XPs implimentation of USB2.0 you are restricted to 127 devices per Host Controller. There is no limits to how many of each class you can have on the same bus. So in therory XP can support 127 joysticks, pedals, yokes and throttles. Windows does number these devices in some arcane way. (My MSFFB pro always ends up as device 1) I read some where that IL2 only supports devices 1-4.
  12. Do you guys across the pond not see reruns of TopGear? You should catch the the show where they built a British space shuttle using a reliant robin car ... Or the show where they drove from Orlando to New Orleans in cheap cars + pickups
  13. After the intrest in the Xwing and TIE skins for IL2 I didnt realise there was so many SF fans in the Dogs I know this is old and you probably have all seen it but watch this link Star Wars "COPS" You have to listen carefully to the voiceovers and RT chat. I laughed my ass off
  14. What this story fails to mention is the fate of the village of Charton. If you follow Charton Road north you end at a crash gate halfway down the runway. There was worry that the Brabazon would not be able to take off from the existing runway so the village of charlton was compulsery purchased and the peolple rehomed in Patchway. The Village was bulldozed and the runway extended to 8000+ ft to handle this monster aircraft. I think the maiden flight got up in less than 4000 ft
  15. I had the same nagging thoughts as I had relatives who were in the royal navy. And if you think about it you are sending sailors to the bottom But playing the game does give you an insight to how brave these men were and how difficult their job was. Don't forget that allied bomber command spent the war either indirectly or directly targeting civilians. All it brings home is war is an appalling waste of brave men on both sides If you want to explore submarine warfare the atalntic was the difinitive place. The action was consentrated due to the amount of shipping involved and the arms race between hunters and hunted. The pacific was just too vast and historicaly many patrols drew a blank . 1000's of miles without spotting a single ship. The campain gets easier towards the end as japan is left with just a few ships . The japanese antisub weapons just did not advance at the same rate as the allies in the atlantic With the SH3 the campain gets harder and harder towards the end. in 1945 just getting home is a challenge as the allies get more armed ships , more aircraft, better weapons and tactics. If you get spotted you will be sunk. It is this stage of the campain you develop a respect for the vollenteers who lost 75% of their number
  16. As the model is more detailed than the GWX2 mod for SH3 and the ship is flying the japanese flag it has to be Silent Hunter 4.

  21. We had the baclk of the house extended and I managed to sneek 400m of Cat5E into the build... most rooms have a socket with 3 RG45 and 1 phone. I still have to use wireless due to cupboards being placed in front of the sockets etc....My wife swears that its not done on purpose...... directly infront of my data socket is the ONLY place the bookcase / fishtank / hamstercage will fit in that room.
