  1. Seems Bert might have had a lucky escape there on Tuesday evening after experiencing a structural failure of the left wing seconds after take-off which resulted in the aircraft rolling inverted before hitting the ground very hard still upside-down and spreading itself over a wide area. Worth noting that I accidentally clipped a building with the wingtip while taxiing but decided to proceed with the take-off as there was no visible damage - this was obviously a major error of judgement with nearly fatal quinsequonces. If anyone else suffers a similar mishap, I would recommend scrubbing that sortie! Good job we had no bombs on board, as there was no time to jettison them once the accident started. After consulting a bottle of scotch the MO has cleared me to fly on Sunday...

  4. So you found a nice third party skin for your favourite DCS ride and you've downloaded it. Q1. Where should it go? You have two options: 1. The Saved Games folder A dedicated Liveries folder within Saved Games DCS folder is the place recommended by ED for Third Party Skins = C:\Users\"yourusername"\Saved Games\DCS*\Liveries\"modulename" (* or DCS.openbeta) It keeps the core game folder structure and the files within, sterile. Should you need ever to run a repair on your DCS install, it will flag ANY third party skin content as potentially worthy of removal and if you were careless or inattentive you could potentially lose all of your downloaded skins. It is also the simplest place (kind of...) as it keep all your skins in one place whereas some of the core DCS install Liveries folders are in non-common and quite disingenuous places. However, there are issues... The Saved Games Folder is natively on the C:\ or Operating System drive and if, like me, that is starting to nibble at the limits of it's capacity, having a lot of skins in the Saved Games\DCS\Liveries area will bloat it considerably. Also there is no native folder structure within this Liveries folder for every module: you need to create a folder and name it correctly for it to work. Here is a list of some of the most common modules whose names I have ID'd: 2. The Core DCS File Structure As outlined above there is an issue with repairing DCS by putting your 3rd Party skins here, but if you're aware and careful it should be less of an issue. The main problem will be finding the specific location for them as they are disjointed. As a general rule, Flaming Cliffs 3 aircraft, which include the following, F-15C mig-29a mig-29g mig-29s su-25 su-25t su-27 su-33 Should go in their respective folder here: "Install Drive":\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\Bazar\Liveries\"modulename" WW2 era (except the I-16 confusingly...), including AI aircraft for the Asset Pack should go here: "Install Drive":\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\CoreMods\WWII Units\"modulename"\Liveries\"modulename" Others (including the I-16) go here: "Install Drive":\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\CoreMods\aircraft\"modulename"\Liveries\"modulename" Q2. How do I extract the downloaded contents within the relevant folder correctly? The first and most important thing to be aware of is, unlike other sims, there is NOT ONE SINGLE TEXTURE FILE FOR A COMPLETE SKIN; there is at least 1 texture files (sometimes many more) plus a description.lua file. This last file IS REQUIRED. These should be contained in folder. It is this folder that should be placed in the ...\Liveries\"modulename" E.G.: ...\Liveries\SpitfireLFMkIX\RAF, No. 16 Squadron Where the "RAF, No. 16 Squadron" contains the texture file and a description.lua. If you have any problem seeing an installed skin, the first thing to check is that it is not double foldered. i.e. ...\Liveries\SpitfireLFMkIX\RAF, No. 16 Squadron\RAF, No. 16 Squadron This is a common cause for not being able to access skins that you have apparently installed in game. Q3. I still cannot access my new 3rd Party skin, yet I have double checked the install path is correct. Why dear god, why?! The description.lua contains - among other things - a list of the countries 'allowed' to access that skin in game - if you or the mission maker have created the mission with your particular aircraft assigned to a country that does not have the permission to access the skin as defined by the description.lua you will not be able to select it within either the Mission Editor, or within the Loadout Editor in a live mission.

  5. That is famously the favoured tipple of Captain Lewis Nixon from 101st Airborne, as documented in Band of Brothers. I've yet to try it, despite seeing it once in a bar in Barcelona. Fursday Fun Facts brought to you by BluBear

  7. Mission Date 22/11/44 402nd FS - Interception Patrol, Köln 485th FS - Attack Rail Targets in or around Mönchengladbach 410th BG - Bomb Infantry Positions near Julich Debrief: 370th FG 402nd: Capt FT has covered the major events of the first half of today's mission in his debrief above. Lt. Fenton Rea, continues. White 1, Lt. Fenton Rea, regrouped what remained of the squadron (4 aircraft) and continued to their assigned patrol. After several orbits no airborne enemy activity was detected but aircraft were spotted on the ground at Köln-Ostheim airfield and Rea set up an attack out of the sun, from the East. Splitting the two sections on a North South basis, the AAA was quickly silenced and the sections set about attacking single-engined e/a (ID'd as Fw 190A types) across the field. As fuel and ammo ran low, Rea reformed the flight South of Cologne and then set course for home. The 402nd are claiming 6 e/a destroyed in the air and 14 ground targets destroyed total, consisting of 10 parked aircraft and 4 AAA guns. These ground claims are being corroborated.* 485th: Finding slim pickings at their target, the 485th nonetheless managed to wipeout what little was there before moving on to a wider hunt in the surrounding area, successfully so as they were able to net an impressive 23 ground kills, a combination of artillery and AAA guns falling to their guns and bombs. Not only that but they found some e/a to vent their frustration on with 2 kills going to 2nd Lt. Stellar Artois in his first action. 410th BG It is with profound sadness that we have to announce the passing of Major Sid Viscous. He and 2nd Lt. Crosby were on their mission when they and their escort of Spitfires were attacked and overwhelmed by a significant number of enemy aircraft just after they attacked their target. Whilst both pilots successfully crash landed their aircraft, reports indicate that Major Viscous's machine landed just the wrong side of the front-lines and it appears that he and several of his crew were shot attempting to reach the safety of friendly territory. There is some small measure of recompense in 2nd Lt. Crosby and his crew however managing clear the front prior to setting their aircraft and all are safe. 2nd Lt. Crosby's rear gunner also managed to down one of the Hun fighters in reply. Tomorrow is looking good weather wise, according to the Met boys, so go easy on the celebrations/commiserations tonight boys; you'll need clear heads for the morning. 8. As of last weekend, our GBS Server is running two different 'missions' 24/7. One rotating the set of 4 DF a/c oriented missions (90min rotation), the other running the 'Tankcrew Summer' mission, created/tuned by dd_Friar, with options to battle in open field and in towns, or to practice at a gun range. It will restart itself after 3 hours of running. Yeah, bad luck if/when you kill all possible targets on the map in the first half hour - you better go fly for two and a half hours. Note: Some targets will quickly re-spawn after being killed - you cannot run out now! Note: The TankCrew mission will not be running whilst we are doing the regular Sunday/Tuesday Coops, the PWCG campaign, and any other special/custom stuff being created and hosted in between - like on a Saturtankday ... well, no problem, you won't miss that Tankcrew mission, as you are joining the event, for sure! Have Fun! Edit by Friar - The first couple of rows of targets now re-spawn so you will not be able to kill EVERYTHING!

  10. 1. It should not be there at all. If it is there, the mklink command will not work. 2. Not really relevant, you only need to run it once Edit: ah, I now realize I forgot to mention this little detail, lol. Sorry!

  11. Just found out that it is possible to move your "Saved Games" folder to another disk and Windows will retain the connection to DCS core files, so if like me you were running out of disk space on you OS drive, but have plenty of space elsewhere, then rejoice!

  14. Announcement: For reasons best known to itself, PWCG has awarded us NONE of the aircraft that the 402nd strafed on the airfield East of Cologne this past mission. The AAA guns, yes, the static planes, no, despite these being logged as valid targets in previous missions. I was credited with 5 in the in game score table - as witnessed by Painless - and I know BluBear got 2, Fruitbat 2 and Wingflyr 1. We have a .trk file to prove this, currently in the hands of BluBear should anyone wish to see it. Whilst they will not appear within the PWCG Squadron Logs I will be accounting for them in the tally board. I'm announcing this to all for fair play reasoning and transparency but I'll be damned if I'm letting PWCG get away with this one cos it was a bloody good strafe and we deserve the credit for it, especially as considering past missions of a similar vein, all static a/c were logged as valid targets and we were not to know that our efforts were going unrecorded by PWCG. I will be chasing Pat Wilson on why this happened, but there is already ongoing work on a Beta version of PWCG that specifically covers the logging of certain ground target types that currently are not logged and this might fix this issue.

  15. Having watched the track back, it is indeed a spectacular crash sir! You are one lucky sausage Berty. It also illustrates the extent and complexity of the damage modelling in GBS, quite fascinating really. I'll try and do a little vid of it at some point.

  16. Hi Sid, Poetic license on my part to try and explain why PWCG had deemed you KIA; I was as surprised as you to be honest. I suspect that perhaps there's a dice roll when coming down behind enemy lines as to whether you're captured, manage to evade back to friendly lines or are killed, and in this case you got unlucky. Given you were so close to friendly territory it seemed the best excuse to your demise was the shot whilst evading story...

  17. It's the Hasegawa 1/32 Fi156 C Storch. It came with two figures, one pilot and one standing Rommel so I had to raid the spares box for other figures however Mussolini is a generic old man resin figure off the net, only one I could find wearing a Homberg hat.. A coat of primer cleans them up and prepares them ready for some colour...it's very rare I paint figures so this could be fun Most of the figures won't be seen as the fuselage is narrow and hides most of them and the canopy and frames will obscure much of the upper parts. As for the canopy frames I try wherever possible to get a ready made printed masking set made from the yellow modelling masking tape, I can generally get one supplied for every aircraft I have built. If not, then yes, lots of masking.....

  19. Corporal Snafu and Technical Sergeant Fubar seem to have tamed the Gremlins in 'Maybe, Baby?!' as the aircraft performed flawlessly. White Flight formed high astern of Red flight enroute to target, but slowly overtook. Crossing the line, bandits were spotted swinging into our rear section and Red flight engaged. White continued on to target. I followed Capt. Cloister on his run on target. White 2 had a go and then I was cleared for a bomb strike myself, destroying the remaining locomotive. We searched the town for more targets, but finding none, before heading off to hunt targets of opportunity. Catching up with Red flight we found more targets near the front line and managed to destroy some Howitzers and AA. Unfortunately we lost White 2 in the process. With ordinance depleted, White flight followed Red flight and headed for home. The 402nd arrived over the airfield at the same time as the 485 and the pattern was pleasantly full of returning lightnings.

  20. 😐 Shot...? Is that what the game said or is it a bit of poetic licence...? Not that it matters but I landed safely in a field however I saw the crew's chutes collapsing as they dropped into trees.
