Its cool except for one thing at least as far as I noticed. All of our previous missions that we and others made are now unplayable, at least on my machine.

The problem is that the new mission format isn't backward compatible, so the old .msnbin files will need to be removed. To remove the old .msnbin files, go into your data/multiplayer/cooperative or data/multiplayer/dogfight folders, sort by file type and remove (or move if you're concerned you might remove something else) anything ending in .msnbin (be careful to NOT remove any .mission files by mistake when doing this).

The game doesn't need the .msnbin file to launch the mission, but it does enhance performance if it exists. So, for missions you intend to use often, it might be a good idea to open them in the editor and then save them again, thereby creating a new .msnbin file for the old mission.

Gustang,

The mission editor wont open any old missions for me. the files look different . The editor actually crashes when I try and load old missions. (gives an error message first. I cant remember what it says though)

I haven't seen that kind of behavior here (yet), AP. Did you already removed the old .msnbin files and does it do this for all old missions or just some of them?

I did notice that my (single player) missions folder had been cleaned out, including all of my groups. I guess that's why they recommended we backup the files (which I didn't listen to, of course). So far, I haven't had a problem opening old missions, which I'll need to do to re-create my groups. It's probably best anyway, since this way I won' be carrying forward old mistakes.

I haven't figured out how to create an artillery spotting mission. I played the DFW single mission that has you spotting for Arty and it's pretty cool. I sure hope that's (and photo recon) an option in MP. Once I figure it out, I'll let you know,

I haven't tried all of them but all the ones I tried crash the mission editor. I did remove some of the msbin files. Those missions work in the game but still crash the mission editor. Oh well I will just have to create new stuff. It would have been nice to retain the old though. I did back up the game so I have all the old stuff. I will try using the old mission editor and see what happens.

I just reloaded the game, and I'll say it has matured nicely.

I might just give it a go a bit more often.

Trying out this new fangled campaign generator. Let's see how this works...

What an absolutely EPIC patch!!

I just had a chance to give it a go. The career interface is really nice and intuitive, but the best part is how they got so many of the small things sorted out or enhanced.

For example, I started a campaign with a N.17 and was assigned a morning patrol.

The sky is overcast as per the met report, my airbase is near a village and I can hear the "matines" being rung on the church bells, a smattering of rain falls. The windsock flutters lightly in the breeze. The lead's radial engine coughs to life and a green clear to take-off flare goes up...

RoF was immersive before (the best feeling of flight of any sim) but had a certain il2 sterility to it, but now it's started to really flesh out a time and a world.

I'm so delighted I've decided to thank the revs by buying up all the aircraft and options I've not yet bought.

Rig upgrade is becoming increasingly difficult to resist!!

After working with the Editor a bit yesterday, I did run into an editor crash when trying to open an old mission. It was an oddly-named directory, so I hadn't yet removed the old .msnbin file. Once removed, the mission loaded fine.

Agreed. This patch breaths some much-needed life into the single-player game.

I started a DFW and then a SE5a campaign and I'm having a lot of fun with both. The DFW campaign is mostly bombing missions, although I did have one photo recon. From what I've gathered, the Artillery Spotting missions are reserved for pilots of higher rank, so I've yet to fly one in a campaign setting (there is otherwise a single, arty spotting example for the DFW).

In a couple of the SE5a missions, I got dinged by a rear gunner while running a DFW down and force-landed in friendly territory. The AI is instructed to dive toward friendly lines when attacked or their primary mission has been completed, so it's usually a race against time. One instance was a coolant leak, which I thought perhaps was fuel at first, but the temp gauge gave it away. The other I couldn't explain, but the engine was clearly not revving properly, so made the (correct) call to turn around an head for home.

I was kind of disappointed with the aerodrome attack mission because the AI decided (rather was instructed) to circuit the enemy airfield a couple of times, exposing the entire flight to much flak and MG fire. Needless to say I watched from a distance as the flight commander was hit by a direct burst. Seemed fitting that he was the only one who didn't make it back.

While it's possible to drag these generated missions into the editor, they are _extremely_ heavy with content, clearly bogging down the editor (on my new machine). Of course, we'll try a coop conversion, but I doubt these will help us online. So, it's probably a good thing we put time into converting the PW generated missions.

Ive had an absolute blast with the new campaign. Trying to keep my Nieup 17 from disentigrating from...well...you name it...has proved challenging. Everything seems to run more smoothly as well, at least in sp. Way to go 777! :thumbsu:

I have started a carrier in September 1916 with the Newport 17 also. I flew the patrol route and was supposed to kill a reported enemy aircraft in teh area. I never saw it but I have enjoyed every minute of my flying time. I guess it happend in WW1 too :)I was enjoying the views and it amazed me. They did a pretty good job with that patch. It runs smoother too. What a beautiful sim.
