ATI 3870

I have just upgraded from a X1900XT 256mb to a 3870 512 DDR4. Latest driver listed on the AMD/ATI site is 7-12 for this

card on XP 32bit.

With this driver I get 20, 40, and 300+ fps (worst, ave, best) ~5fps average

I dont think the CCC's are compatible between Driver releases.

Kling m8. I think you are confirming that you have reached the limit of what il2 will do. I was thinking of getting a 8800 GTX but have decided to hold off until Bob comes along.

You could be right Jim. I still have some more tweeking to with the Tray Tools. The gains are getting smaller, and frame

rates in game seem fairly constant at 20, 45, 60 in Black Death.

It was definatly not worth £164 for the small gain that I have. The X1900XT was a great card for IL2. Maybe with a better driver

the 3870 will come good. Still, nothing venured nothing gained.

On a brighter note, I now have 333 FSB speed, giving my E6300 CPU 2.3 gig from 1.86 standard. Woo hoo!

This was achieved by following BBloke's advice and pushing the ram voltage up to 2.1v from 1.85v as per Corsair spec.

Made no difference to frame rates though.

Cheers m8, it was fun playing around with the bios and I learned a lot about speeds voltages temperatures etc.

I just have to retain that knowlege while I'm hammering nails in at work.

The nice thing about waiting for the game to come out, or at least having the specs released, is that you can then use a 1-generation removed video card to upgrade to.

Its now running pretty good in game but I'm still getting anomalies like this 'mist in the hills'

Is there a simple way of getting rid of that?

Well I now have it playing IL2 acceptably with good frame rates. I was interested to see how it would perform with a modern game.

Installed Call of Duty 4 and wow, the intro movie alone just blew me away! Great game, but too intense for this old geezer.

Graphics wise, cod 4 is very impressive with the 3870.

Update. Installed the new Cat 8.1 driver after reading Badatit's post on Ubi.

Bloody Marvellous.. glad to hear its all as it should be and the improvement is a big boost too.

They seem more involved in the newer cards which is good to see especially with improvements like that.

LOL, sorry Pook. I just got a new credit card with zero interest till November. Its like free money.

I posted my results so others would know what to expect if they go down a similar route.
