How to use GIMP

Hello 

have download GIMP and DDS plug in, watched some really really boring interesting tutorials on youtube and basically failed to find the idiots version.  Can I please request the assistance of a genius to explain the mysteries of how to do some simple editing of an existing dds file?

Adobe PS is the main course, I can't find my old version, and may breakdown and buy a new one.
