Graphics Settings:

Attention Pilots,

As we prepare to release version 1.019 for ROF, we need to share some information about the changes we have made to the graphics engine.

The first thing you will notice is an updated ROF Launcher and Settings screen. The Update screen is unchanged and works as before.

Compare the 1.018 to 1.019 Launcher below.

1018_Settings.png

1019_Settings.png

You’ll notice some new settings in the pic above.

1. The Launcher now includes a News tab that allows us to alert you to cool new happenings in the ROF universe.

2. Objects Draw Distance

3. Very Far and Maximum Forest Draw Distance

4. Super Sampling On/Off

5. SLI/Crossfire On/Off

6. Sound now has a 128 sounds option.

Let’s look now at each new graphics setting and what it does.

1. News - The News tab is so we can announce anything we want to our community quickly. It could be anything as the module is a simple HTML powered module. Of course, you need to be connected to the web for it to work.

2. Objects Visibility - The object draw distance affects ALL objects other than trees. This means that Airplanes, Buildings, Vehicles, Balloons and their associated effects such as Flak are drawn much further out. At maximum draw distance Objects are drawn at 8500m. Their draw distance is no longer connected to the FOV setting. This is what you have asked for and we have tried to deliver. We have found in testing that if you can already run ROF successfully you should be able to run 100% Draw Distance with little or no impact on game performance.

On a related note, buildings now fade in as you approach them just like the trees do. No more popup buildings.

With regards to Multiplayer, this setting is a Client side option. For technical reasons this will never become a Server side option. Again, the large majority of users will be able to set this at 100% with no issues.

3. Forest Visibility - We have added increased draw distances for the trees if you have a good graphics card. Very Far and Maximum settings draw trees much further out than before to help match the new draw distance options for Objects. Too many trees can hurt performance so it is up to you.

4. Super Sampling - was an experiment to find a simple way to decrease the “shimmer” some complain about. It does just that, but it is has a huge performance penalty and should only be attempted by those with powerful systems. Our Super Sampling is option runs at 2X setting and even that crushes most systems. Sorry, but this is not a magical solution and your mileage may vary.

IMPORTANT NOTE – NEVER RUN SUPER SAMPLING IN CONJUNCTION WITH AA AND AF SET MORE THAN 2X. If you do you will probably have 1FPS and/or Black Screen. It’s best to run Super Sampling with AF set to Bilinear and AA set to 0. The picture will still look good. Clouds and other particle effects do not like Super Sampling and your frame rate will suffer as a result. Again, some will like this feature, but most will not. To get rid of the “shimmer” completely will require a whole new graphics engine and that is not possible in the near-term.

If you don’t like our Super Sampling option you can still try the nVidia Inspector tool and use the 2X Sparse Grid Super Sample option that tool provides. It will improve your image, but it too causes a performance hit. You can Google nVidia Inspector to find it or search our forums as there has been discussion about it. For a 3rd Party tool it’s quite powerful. But use at your own risk. We are not responsible for any damage caused by its usage.

5. SLI/Crossfire - nVidia SLI and ATI Crossfire support has been adopted by ROF with this version. Multi-GPU usage should offer some nice performance improvements for those with low or mid-range systems that have a Multi-GPU setup, however there are some caveats as you will read below. We utilize the Alternate Frame Rendering technique which is the best solution for a sim engine like ours. You will find below the recommended settings for both SLI and Crossfire drivers.

SLI Settings:

SLI4.png

Crossfire Settings:

CCC1.png

CCC2.png

CCC4.png

It should be understood that Multi-GPU support introduces all kinds of special problems for our engine as well as other game engines. One issue that is native to Multi-GPU support is the so called “micro-stutters”. We have done our best to negate micro-stutters and in almost cases there are no stutters. However, with an SLI/Crossfire system you may encounter a small stutter when the sun comes into view. There is not much we can do about this; even nVidia acknowledges these issues are a challenge for SLI systems. Also, when the sun is blocked by part of your plane it takes longer for it to disappear. As before, there is nothing we can do about this issue.

Finally, there are situations where stutters will occur when particle effects get between your camera viewpoint and the sun. Examples where you may encounter stutter with SLI/Crossfire are:

-In overcast skies when you skim the bottom of the overcast or the top of the overcast.

- When you first enter a cloud or skim the edge of a cloud.

- When you fly through the brown fog in No Man’s Land.

Again, this is when your viewpoint looks at particles and the sun is on the other side of the effect. The stutters are caused by the engine trying to determine whether or not the sun should be visible. We have tried to eliminate it, but we have discovered after many wasted days working on this that there is nothing more we can do. We apologize for this, but we have found that the exact circumstances where these types of stutters may occur is not that often and the trade-off for more frames in all other circumstances is worth it for those that already own a Multi-GPU system.

Additionally, single video card users may also turn on SLI/Crossfire support and gain some performance. The reason for this is because Multi-GPU support turns on some optimizations that even single cards may find helpful. However, this may introduce the same possible micro-stutters mentioned above.

Also, some of you will try to enable Triple Buffer to help with any micro-stutters you perceive. Be warned that some users have experienced flashing textures a result of enabling Triple Buffer in the drivers.

After months of testing and a lot of headache, our official recommendation to users about adopting SLI/Crossfire for ROF remains the same. Our engine was not designed for it and implementing it was very difficult and as I mention above the results are somewhat mixed. We still recommend that you invest in a really strong single card solution to boost your ROF frame rate if you feel it necessary. We suggest you save the money you would spend on a second video card and use it to buy a better processor if need be.

6. Sounds - We have added a new 128 sounds option to the sound settings. This should help make sure no sounds ever cut out when you are in combat. This does however take up more memory, but we have detected no issues in testing with this setting.

1019_Sound.png

If you absolutely have no use for or simply do not like our new graphics options and want to return your settings to 1.018 standards here is what you will need to set them too. But please be warned that to accommodate these new items we had to make some fundamental changes to the engine and even though the settings below will be very close to 1.018 your performance may not be exactly the same. But it should be very close. Simply reduce forests to Far, reduce Objects Visibility to 50 and turn off SLI/Crossfire. The rest of the settings just set it to what you had before.

1019_1018_Same.png

We hope this give you an insight into what to expect graphically with version 1.019 and it will help you avoid any surprises and guide you in your setup.

Automatically Set ATI Settings:

If you have your Anti-Aliasing set to Manual (Unchecked 'Use application settings' checkbox) then you will get NO AA in RoF! Even if you tell your ATI CCC to force AA on to 4x, 8x, or 16x, RoF will ignore this and you will have no AA in your game.

You can check the 'Use Application Settings' checkbox each time you play RoF or leave it on all the time. Or, you can make a ATI CCC Profile from the Options menu in the CCC to set your driver settings to turn this on, and also start RoF for you. You can have the CCC Profile Manager create a desktop shortcut that turns this feature on and also starts RoF for you. Then all you need to do is double-click this icon and the ATI settings will be customized for RoF and your game will automatically be started for you.

Updating:

You can check out the official RoF forum to see if there is a new update available (look under NEWS http://riseofflight.com/Blogs/default.aspx) or you can just click on update button just after you clicked on your ROF Desktop Icon. Just chose update instead of Start and it will check for update. It will then download and install the new update if there is one. If it is a large update I would recommend using a torrent then once downloaded you can just click on the file, tell it where your RoF directory is tnen it will install it for you. There is always a Torrent link posted normally by Han on the RoF Forum under Community / Main forum and look right below the top page under Global Announcements link: http://riseofflight.com/Forum/ Take a look, click on 1.019 - version is ready! Look at the very bottom of Han's post and there is the torrent file for you to download.

Tweaking and Customizing your game:

__________________________________________________

WIN7 and ROF THE FOLLOWING TWEAK IS NOT NEEDED ANYMORE AFTER UPDATE 1.021 WAS RELEASED. IT INCLUDED NEW DUAL-CORE SUPPORT FOR WIN7 (as of 31 Aug 2011).

http://riseofflight.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=276&t=5688

Rof & Win7 & Core 2 Duo Tweak

FlyingHigh (a RoF Community member) had a lot of stutters and freezes with RoF on his system.

(WIn 7 x64 & Core 2 Duo)

FPS was:

Min/Max/Avg : 7 / 41 / 22.596

He wrote a small utility that rebalance processors usage by rof.exe.

Now his fps is: Min/Max/Avg: 33 / 44 / 37.928 and it is rather smooth and playable.

He then tested it on two systems with Win7 x64 Core 2 Duo. After same tweak for his second win7 x64 dual core system avg fps is x3 times better now (13 -> 40).

Note that It might not help for dual core configurations with other OS or quad core processors , but you can try it and see if it works.

Quick start:

1) run RoFBoost.exe (as Administrator or disable UAC).

2) start RoF.exe

3) Load any mission (quick, single, career, multi)

4) What to do:

- Find RoFBoost icon in system tray, do right mouse click, select "Affinity Core 1"

- switch back to game and check performance

- If it doesn't help and perfromance is still poor - select "Affinity Core 2"

5) If there is no difference in performance after tweak - it means that you have some other bottleneck in system performance.

This procedure doesn't affect your hardware.

It just telling the main rof.exe thread to use one of the two cores as "ideal core" during the scheduling process.

You can do the same thing using Process Hacker program, but rof_boost tool is more easy to use and more user friendly.

He tested it for Win 2003 Dual core configuration and got some performance and smooth improvement too. Not so significant as for Win 7, but rather noticeable.

You can download the RoF boost tool here in our vault: http://dangerdogz.com/forums/files/file/531-rof-boostzip/

Hoping that it will help someone!

Setup your game controller responses curves for Pitch:

HI,

I have found that adjusting the response curve for Pitch for every Airplane I own has made a big improvement for me. To do this it is best to go into the FLY NOW missions and chose an Airplane. Load up the mission and take off.

Also what I did is chose 50% fuel, no boms and select the basic bullets load. I figured that it would be the conditions in wich I would normally fly anyways. While your in the air hit the PAUSE KEY and the mission will pause.

Then click on OPTIONS at the bottom of the screen and follow this instructions:

rofresponsespitch.jpg

Once you have saved it, close the options screen and hit PAUSE to resume your flight and see if the Airplane is still wanting to pull upwards too much. If it does, PAUSE the game again and repeat the process ( adjusting the pitch curve further down ) save, exit OPTIONS and resume the game and see the difference and keep adjusting until you find what you are looking for. Do this for all the Airplanes you have.

Once your all done, all you have to do is go into options before you fly and chose the response profile for the Airplane you are going to fly.

I hope this will help aomeone. :)

Have a Happy Flight !

Backup your Game Control Assignments:

To backup your game controller key assignments just backup the following file to a safe place:

data\input\input.map

Setup your TrackIR:

- Re-centering your view:

The game itself, as well as TrackIR can get off centered. So, sometimes just centering your TrackIR is not enough. You also need to recenter the games view. The numpad 5 key (in game) as default is your snap center view key. You can, just like the Gun sight views adjust that. Use the same techniques but hold the numpad 5 key, adjust your view, press F10 to save then release both keys. enable TIR then it should work. You best do this in a flynow mission with the aircraft you want to make the change too.

Remove the Game Intro Video:

If you want to get rid of that NEOQB or 777Studios Intro movie when you start the sim and save around 10 seconds of loading time then all you need to do is rename or remove the file named '' LogoNQB.bik '' that is located in your sim folder under \Data\ I have renamed mine -logoNQB.bik and it works. However you might have to do this procedure again after an update.

Hosting:

How to setup your Router:

Open both UDP and TCP for all these ports: 80, 443, 28000, 28001 and 28100

Limitations:

Hosting has it's limitations due to the amount of data being transferred and processed. For Example: Figure 1 player is a constant 250k upload speed, 2 players jumps over 500k, when it hits 5 you're over 1 meg constant upload speed. This also exponentially increases the more clients join. For example when you have 20 people in, 1 extra player could increase the constant upload bandwidth by at least 2 megs (insane eh?). Since ROF streams to a master server, you need major amounts of bandwidth for the server to stream with and to calculate the clients are joined (combined effort).

How to Fly:

Please take the time to learn and practice Engine Management. The DDz RoF community is flying ''FULL SWITCHES'' in orther words, we fly with the following settings on only: Subtitles and Warm Engines. We find that with these settings, we are getting the most realistic flying experience that RoF has to offer. You will have to learn how to dive without over reving or over cooling your engine (proper use of radiator settings), set the proper mixture at different altitudes to make sure you are constantly getting the best RPM as possible, use your navigation skills using your map and a compass (that is if your lucky enough to have a compass). Please don't be intimidated by this. Let me tell you that after a short while, you get pretty good at this :) Also see Requiem's training videos (just below) to learn tips on how to take off and land and learn how to operate the bomber's bomb sights.

Here are some good videos that will help you learn how to manage your engines: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=reqiem+engine+management&aq=f

How to Setup Gunsight views in all your aircrafts:

You can map a gunsight view to the joystick hatswitch so that it over-rides TIR when the hatswitched is pushed and returns view control to the TIR the moment you stop pushing the switch,

Here's how:

How to make a gunsight view (or any other fixed view):

1) Get into the cockpit and turn off your TrackIR (or just disable it). A free-flight mission is best so you can do it stationary on the ground.

2) Pick the numpad key (0-9) you want to assign to a view (e.g., gunsight view). Hold that key down!

3) While holding down the numpad key, use the HOME to PAGE DOWN keys and the mouse and zoom controls to get the exact view position, zoom and direction you want.

4) Continue holding down the numpad key and press F10 to assign that view to that numpad key. Only now release the numpad key. Press the Escape key and save. Do that for each plane.

5) Finished!

6) Repeat for the other numpad keys if you want other views.

Main point - hold the numpad key you want to assign to the view down through the entire process.

When you press the numpad key (or use the hat switch), the view will now snap to your pre-defined view for as long as you hold the key down. On my Sidewinder FFB joystick, the positions of the hat switch correspond to the numpad keys by default, so hat up is numpad-8, hat down is numpad-2, hat upper-right is numpad-9 etc. (if not, you should be able to map them to the key anyway). If you can't move the view with the numpad key held down, try hitting F9 to cycle through the different view modes.

Of course, the views you set are particular to that type of aircraft, so you can have different gunsight views on, say, the Dophin and Pfalz D.IIIa.

I have a gunsight view in all aircraft mapped to numpad-8, which is "hat switch up". On those rare occasions when I can get into a firing position, all I have to do in the game is to push the hatswitch up, immediately TIR is over-ridden and the view goes to a fixed, zoomed gunsight view for as long as I hold the hat switch up. The moment I release it, my viewpont goes back to the standard pilot head position and TIR resumes. It's absolutely brilliant and a very clever bit of thinking on Neoqb's part.

Doing this you can map a whole series of fixed views to your numpad keys or hat switch for each aircraft, all of which will over-ride TrackIR the moment you press the key or use the hat switch. You can set a view ahead with the pilot viewpoint raised as much as possible to see over a wing, or you can set one crouching down over the gunsight or zoomed in on compass, fuel guage etc. All these views will be fixed and you cannot pan from them or look around from them with the TrackIR. My usual views include gunsight, ahead-left leaning as far left out of the cockpit as possible, ahead-right the same, straight up (can never get enough "up" from my TIR), down to either side, again leaning over the cockpit and zoomed views of various instruments depending on the aircraft in question.

I was incredibly confused by the RoF view system at first. It's not well explained in the RoF html page linked from the settings menu. However, once you've cracked it, it's very good indeed and answers almost all the problems we have in flight sims with TIR. Definitely worth taking the time to sort it out.

Can't help with the load times!

Cheers,

RD

WIND ANGLE PROTRACTOR - TO BE USED FOR BOMBING WITH THE HANDLEY PAGE BOMBING SIGHT

I have found a very cool and fonctionnel protractor to read the wind correction in ROF. No math to do. Just move the protractor's wheels, read the wind correction and apply it to the proper instrument in the Bomb sight :)

P1000879.jpg

I foud this tool in the Russian ROF Forum last night. I could not read the instructions but its very easy to figure out. I have uploaded a file in the ROF Download section called WAC.rar In this compressed file you will find a file called ""how to read it"" that I have made to explain how it works. There is a template for you to use to make your own Protractor. I have printed the template on a transparent plastic and made my protractor using a white cardboard. Easy to do and it is helpfull :)

My hat goes to the creator of this template and I think is name is ISAY.

Hope it will be usefull to you. I use it all the time when bombing with the Handley Page. Its a quick and efficent way to find your wind correction factor that you need to input in your instrument.
