Sorry to bother you guys with details of our boring home life, but this is food for thought and a little scary. We just had our WW2 era house furnace replaced. Inside the old furnace door were the manufacturer's documents, with an install date of June 1940. It was so early in the European war, the French hadn't even had time to surrender.

Here's the scary bit: The furnace guys noticed that some of the old ducting had collapsed (corrosion) and was venting furnace exhaust into the house.

Wow, a 70 year old heating system and you never had it serviced or checked??? No shortage of optimism (and CO) in your house then? As a builder of houses for many years I'm always gob-smacked by the number of people who think the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" saying applies to household safety. Or car safety, or most forms of safety.

Sorry to beat on you SkyPup, but it's a lesson that is often learned only through tragedy. You've been lucky this time, but annual safety checks are the best way to go from here on.

cheers
