delta7
I always thought level bombing was a black art until I found this- works great and very easy to use so Iv copied it here DeadFall s Bombing Guide Although there are a few pilots that are able to accurately drop their bombs right in the "pickle barrel" from 15000+ft on every run, there are a lot that either havent tried, or do not know the ease of how these runs can be made accurately. I hear a number of people on comms taking their B25's low as they either havent mapped keys or cant accuratly get bombs on target other than divebombing. Flying at 18000ft, you often dont encounter a large number of enemy fighters, and with your fighter escort they usually dont have the energy for more than 1 pass. In the hope of encouraging more people to perform High Alt level bombing runs (hopefully with fighter escort) rather than getting chewed up on the deck I've taken the time to write this up to help others. Is it difficult? Not at all. Need a TAS/IAS chart or specific speed/altitude to hit the target everytime? Nope. Want to learn how? Read on. Key settings. If you havent configured your keys for the bombsight, do it now. Also do not forget to assign a level stabiliser button. First things first. An easy to set up practice bomb run. This is very simple to do and easy to repeat. Run a few of these and you will see how easy it is to hit your targets everytime. Load up FB, and choose the Quick Mission Builder. Select bomber of choice, loadout etc. Leave the map at Okinawa but change your start altitude to 5000m. When you enter the mission you will almost be facing the big concrete runway at Okinawa. This runway has static planes and cars ready to bomb. Ok, next. Level flight. There are many ways to skin this cat, but I find easiest is to use combat flaps in combination with your level stabiliser button. Without flaps and at altitudes around and greater than 15kft the level stabiliser will not hold altitude. It is possible to fix this by using full up trim, but I tend to forget to retrim before releasing level stabiliser resulting in an attempted vertical climb by my bomber, thus combat flaps is my method of choice. Ok, level flight is achieved. Next, look for the target. Jump into the bombardiers position and hit Shift F1. You will now be looking through the bombsight. Raise the bombsight so you can see the island and runway ahead. It will take a little while for your bombsight to stabilise, so it may not be displaying crosshairs immediatly. Use rudder trim to adjust flightpath and line up your target. This will not disturb the sight so you will not loose the crosshairs. Now adjust your bombsight altitude. Set it to the same value as shown in your speedbar. If you correctly used combat flaps, it should not change 9 out of 10 times from this point. Line up the crosshairs on your target and hit the bombsight automation key. Here is the key part to a simple successfull drop. Trust your bombsight crosshairs!!. If the target is sliding up or down the crosshairs adjust your bombsight speed to compensate. This will be an ongoing process right till bomb release point. Increasing bombsight speed will move the crosshairs down, decreasing = up. Use rudder trim for left/right adjustments. If the target slips too much you may need to turn off automation, and re-align the crosshairs before turning automation back on. Continue to adjust speed to keep the crosshairs directly on target. Check your altitude and make a final adjustment if nessesary. Wait for bombrelease. Sit back and watch the fireworks! **Note. If bomb delay is set to 0, you will see the impact without touching the bombsight. Now raise combat flaps turn off level stabiliser and head for home. Dont forget to jump into those gunner positions to hose down those pesky fighters setting up camp at the rear of your bomber. Hit escape click refly and your lined up again for another bombrun. delta7
Here is some notes to the above 1) you have to bind some keys to work the bombsight 1) level stabaliser 2) bombsight automation 3) bombsight altitude plus 4) bombsight altitude minus 5) bombsight speed plus 6) bombsight speed minus 7) bombsight elevation plus bombsight elevation minus 9) bombsight sideslip left 10) bombsight sideslip right 11) rudder trim I have it set up on my x-45 that mode 3 is bomb mode with these set 1) level stabaliser
Perfesser
This method does work. Thanks Delta. The only thing you want to add is to know the height of your ground target ASL and subtract that from your bombsight alt. I hit what I'm aiming at about 60% of the time from 5000m
DD_Arthur
Check out this great little tutorial from Joe-90.
