DDz Quorum Share Posted February 22, 2008 ~S~ Chaps, Went to the Royal Marines Museum in Portsmouth today as we do at work once a year for a fire safety inspection. Got chatting to the health and safety/tour guide chap who is an ex Royal Marine Commando himself. Apparently the word "commandos" is the Boer* word for terrorist ! Didn't know that ~S~ Painless *"The Boer War" was fought from 11 October 1899 until 31 May 1902, between the British Empire and its independent colonies of Australia, Canada and New Zealand and the two independent Boer republics of the Orange Free State and the South African Republic (Transvaal Republic). Rattler
Too true. In the Boer War, the Boer Commandos operated like the French Maquis. Every town and hamlet had a commando, and all males and many women participated in the defense of the country by sabotage.

I'm told by our resident military historian on station that it was spelt with a "K" by the Boers. ~S~ Painless
