Sunflower
Does the bombsight gyro have to stabilize before the level wings autopilot will function? I'm having a heck of a time getting the wings level a/p to function at all while on bomb run.
Tonar
no the auto level should work at all times. are you saying it doesn't stay level? this is not the Auto pilot Key. this is the "LEVEL STABALIZER" and I think it is located for mapping near the top of the list. other than that, What I have read is that the smoother you fly the plane as you get set up, the quicker the scope site becomes visible because the Gyro needs less time to chill out. which is the difficulty I am trying to overcome. if look through the bomb site while you are on the runway, the site will be up. I have been playing around with how much I can move the plane for correction before the site goes out. I was able to fly the bird through the site and still maintain the Gyro for small movements. Sunflower
ah, indeed, I had not mapped the correct control! I have seen the bombs hit where I wanted them to twice, but several times with the same setup they didn't hit the ground where the reticle suggested they would.... I'll join you for practice on ZvW when I can.
Sunflower
In the A-20, with level stab on and the bombsight tracking in auto mode, the aim point drifts across the ground to the right several hundred meters over the course of the run. Tonar
What is Slip Control? Rudder trim? the A-20 has a Bomb Site?
Sunflower
A-20C I thought I'd pick a plane from 46 and learn it.
Tonar
Yup the trim works, but the controls do not. Just the rudder trim mind you, because the Level stabilizer will counter the Elevator trim. I agree with the satisfaction You get by dropping 4 x 500lbs & a 1000lbs on the unaware.
BBloke
Hi Sunflower.
Sunflower
Thanks for the help! I did a run using the rudder trim and had them going right where the initial aim point was- although the aim point did start moving toward the a/c near the end of the run. Do you need to take the sight off of "Auto" to change the speed and altitude parameters? How do I get the AI to drop on the same run as I? BBloke
No. The best way I find to do the run is line up the vertical with trim so you can at least see when you are slightly veering off course. Adjust the bomb angle to below the target and let it the horizontal line rise during the natural flight path of the plane. Hit Bomb Automation when the horizontal line hits the target. DO NOT USE BOMB ANGLE ONCE BOMB AUTOMATION HAS BEEN ACTIVATED. (This will turn it off) When adjusting the bomb velocity do NOT turn off bomb automation. BBloke
I've just been trying some 10,000ft bombing with moving targets.
BadAim
This is why I picked the P-47.
Tonar
But you are missing all those Machine guns for defence. Thats the one reason I fly the bomber. I feel safer Von Tonar (the chicken)
Sunflower
Just returned to the screen, would have enjoyed a practice session. One thing I learned stumbling through this is that the autopilot can be disabled so that a person can practice gunnery from crew stations without the AI pilot engaged!!! BBloke
Yes, I agree. High alt does make it harder to hit targets.
