    Poetic license on my part to try and explain why PWCG had deemed you KIA; I was as surprised as you to be honest. I suspect that perhaps there's a dice roll when coming down behind enemy lines as to whether you're captured, manage to evade back to friendly lines or are killed, and in this case you got unlucky.

    Given you were so close to friendly territory it seemed the best excuse to your demise was the shot whilst evading story...

    402nd FS - Interception Patrol, Köln

    485th FS - Attack Rail Targets in or around Mönchengladbach

    410th BG - Bomb Infantry Positions near Julich

     

    Debrief:

    370th FG

    402nd: Capt FT has covered the major events of the first half of today's mission in his debrief above. Lt. Fenton Rea, continues.

    White 1, Lt. Fenton Rea, regrouped what remained of the squadron (4 aircraft) and continued to their assigned patrol. After several orbits no airborne enemy activity was detected but aircraft were spotted on the ground at Köln-Ostheim airfield and Rea set up an attack out of the sun, from the East. Splitting the two sections on a North South basis, the AAA was quickly silenced and the sections set about attacking single-engined e/a (ID'd as Fw 190A types) across the field. As fuel and ammo ran low, Rea reformed the flight South of Cologne and then set course for home.

    The 402nd are claiming 6 e/a destroyed in the air and 14 ground targets destroyed total, consisting of 10 parked aircraft and 4 AAA guns. These ground claims are being corroborated.*

    485th:

    Finding slim pickings at their target, the 485th nonetheless managed to wipeout what little was there before moving on to a wider hunt in the surrounding area, successfully so as they were able to net an impressive 23  ground kills, a combination of artillery and AAA guns falling to their guns and bombs. Not only that but they found some e/a to vent their frustration on with 2 kills going to 2nd Lt. Stellar Artois in his first action.

    410th BG

    It is with profound sadness that we have to announce the passing of Major Sid Viscous. He and 2nd Lt. Crosby were on their mission when they and their escort of Spitfires were attacked and overwhelmed by a significant number of enemy aircraft just after they attacked their target.

    Whilst both pilots successfully crash landed their aircraft, reports indicate that Major Viscous's machine landed just the wrong side of the front-lines and it appears that he and several of his crew were shot attempting to reach the safety of friendly territory. There is some small measure of recompense in 2nd Lt. Crosby and his crew however managing clear the front prior to setting their aircraft and all are safe. 2nd Lt. Crosby's rear gunner also managed to down one of the Hun fighters in reply.

  4. So you found a nice third party skin for your favourite DCS ride and you've downloaded it.

    Q1. Where should it go?

    You have two options:

    1. The Saved Games folder

    A dedicated Liveries folder within Saved Games DCS folder is the place recommended by ED for Third Party Skins = C:\Users\"yourusername"\Saved Games\DCS*\Liveries\"modulename" (* or DCS.openbeta)

    It keeps the core game folder structure and the files within, sterile. Should you need ever to run a repair on your DCS install, it will flag ANY third party skin content as potentially worthy of removal and if you were careless or inattentive you could potentially lose all of your downloaded skins.

    It is also the simplest place (kind of...) as it keep all your skins in one place whereas some of the core DCS install Liveries folders are in non-common and quite disingenuous places.

    However, there are issues...

    The Saved Games Folder is natively on the C:\ or Operating System drive and if, like me, that is starting to nibble at the limits of it's capacity, having a lot of skins in the Saved Games\DCS\Liveries area will bloat it considerably.

    Also there is no native folder structure within this Liveries folder for every module: you need to create a folder and name it correctly for it to work. Here is a list of some of the most common modules whose names I have ID'd:

    2. The Core DCS File Structure

    As outlined above there is an issue with repairing DCS by putting your 3rd Party skins here, but if you're aware and careful it should be less of an issue.

    The main problem will be finding the specific location for them as they are disjointed.

    As a general rule, Flaming Cliffs 3 aircraft, which include the following,

    • F-15C
    • mig-29a
    • mig-29g
    • mig-29s
    • su-25
    • su-25t
    • su-27
    • su-33

    Should go in their respective folder here:  

    "Install Drive":\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\Bazar\Liveries\"modulename"

     

    WW2 era (except the I-16 confusingly...), including AI aircraft for the Asset Pack should go here:

    "Install Drive":\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\CoreMods\WWII Units\"modulename"\Liveries\"modulename"

     

    Others (including the I-16) go here:

    "Install Drive":\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\CoreMods\aircraft\"modulename"\Liveries\"modulename"

     

    Q2. How do I extract the downloaded contents within the relevant folder correctly?

    The first and most important thing to be aware of is, unlike other sims, there is NOT ONE SINGLE TEXTURE FILE FOR A COMPLETE SKIN; there is at least 1 texture files (sometimes many more) plus a description.lua file. This last file IS REQUIRED. These should be contained in folder. It is this folder that should be placed in the ...\Liveries\"modulename"

    E.G.:

    ...\Liveries\SpitfireLFMkIX\RAF, No. 16 Squadron 

    Where the "RAF, No. 16 Squadron" contains the texture file and a description.lua.

     

    If you have any problem seeing an installed skin, the first thing to check is that it is not double foldered. i.e. 

    ...\Liveries\SpitfireLFMkIX\RAF, No. 16 Squadron\RAF, No. 16 Squadron

    This is a common cause for not being able to access skins that you have apparently installed in game.

     

    Q3. I still cannot access my new 3rd Party skin, yet I have double checked the install path is correct. Why dear god, why?!

    The description.lua contains - among other things - a list of the countries 'allowed' to access that skin in game - if you or the mission maker have created the mission with your particular aircraft assigned to a country that does not have the permission to access the skin as defined by the description.lua you will not be able to select it within either the Mission Editor, or within the Loadout Editor in a live mission.

  6. 1. Mission Count: If you attend spawn, but disconnect, PWCG logs this as a mission credit to you, even if you left prior to takeoff. This will appear on the 'Roster' screenshot. However, when I manually edit the speadsheet I use to create the scoreboard I only credit the mission against you if you took off and engaged the enemy as I feel this is a more realistic reflection of how operational sorties were logged.

    IIRC there was one mission where you either could not start or disconnected prior to takeoff  - PWCG has logged this a mission, I however have not.

    2. Victory Count: where I'd muffed up the AAR process and forgot to log yours and FTs kills and thought I'd managed to correct and reward to you by being clever - turned out I wasn't as clever as I had thought. The edits didn't reconcile somewhere and prevented PWCG from continuing the career, and over the xmas break we had 2 missions that would not progress to the next day. I eventually traced it to the edits I had made to try and award your kill. Thus for the sake of the campaign I have had to redact that kill in PWCG. However, what this means is that your Scoreboard Victory Count should now always be +1 on your Roster Victory Count. Which I see it is not. This is my mistake and can only attribute to doing these rather late at night or several days after the event and forgetting to account for the unusual circumstance of your current tally, so my apologies, I will update the Scoreboard forthwith.

  10. Hi Nick.

    Good work. The 402nd emblem is an early one from their days training on the P-47 in the USA (hence the 4 bladed prop); the 370th FG as a whole did their entire training on the Jug. Sufficed to say they got one hell of a surprise when they finally settled at Andover in the UK and found out they were getting P-38s!

    In light of this conversion, the squadron emblem was redesigned to better reflect the squadrons association with the P-38. 

    I have only one image of the amended 402nd badge - it was, as were all the 370th FG insignia, unofficial (not approved by USAAF high command) - and comes from a photo of a hand-painted patch on a period jacket:

    The wait is almost over, and the new clouds for DCS World will be introduced in the 1st quarter of 2021. In addition to being visually stunning, the new clouds will block visual and optical sensor line of sight and be synchronized online. We will initially release the new cloud system with an array of weather presets that will cater to most mission building scenarios. Later in the year, we will update the Weather Tool in the Mission Editor that will allow finer control of the clouds with a dynamic weather system based on a more advanced meteorological engine.

I believe I have got to the bottom of the issue with the campaign not progressing; the edits I had made to allow for Reggie's kill on the mission of the 16/11/44 seem to be the issue, as removing all of those references allowed me to roll the mission forward to the 18th on my private test server.

    This means that - in PWCG at least - that this kill is unrecorded. However I will be leaving it in the 485th scoreboard for obvious reasons. 

    To avoid any further issues, could we please avoid jumping in as spectators to gunner positions - it was raised as a potential cause and I have not yet had the opportunity to eliminate it as a second reason for the lack of AAR acceptance, so busy was I trying to establish the primary cause for the failure. I'm sure you are starting to get somewhat incredulous at repeatedly having to fly the 17th November, so until I can run some further tests and definitively announce that it's okay to, please DO NOT OCCUPY GUNNER POSITIONS ON OTHER PLAYERS AIRCRAFT for now.

    Tuesday the 5th of January 2021 is currently a go for P-38 campaign.

  14. Hi Racal, welcome to the pound!

    I'm the resident DCS acolyte round these parts, having been waving the flag for the sim since the A-10C first arrived. I have long been trying to lure the Dogz into DCS's dark and tortuous systems through it's seductive graphics and sense of realism. I have managed to ensnare a few unfortunate souls en route but more victims enthusiasts are most welcome.

    I have a reasonable knowledge of most (though not all, I hasten to add) of the modules available so am happy to help with any you choose; or I can at least point you to another DD or some online content that may be more knowledgeable or applicable to the module of your choosing.

    As to where to start? This is always a difficult question. Each module has it's plus points and limitations. For example: the F-14 Tomcat is an awesome machine for A2A and in some regard for bombing but is not so friendly to neophyte jet users with edge of the envelope handling that can be tricky and the lack of a HUD that some jet users rely on to provide feedback. Then the Spitfire; it is a fabulous dogfighter but a pain to get in the air or back on the ground until you've got a lot of practice in. On top of this it is the slowest of the late-WW2 era aircraft so careless use of the stick can leave you stuck grinding holes in the sky as your enemies Boom and Zoom around you. The A-10C is an incredible payload carrying death machine to ground forces, yet it's slow and requires a lot of practice and learning to employ the many systems - just getting an AGM-65 Maverick off the rail can require a 10-step process if you're using other sensors to find targets. The F/A-18C is an amazing all rounder but with slightly under-powered and slow spooling engines can be tricky to carrier land and as the pilot you're always worrying about fuel as it' s at something of a premium in the Hornet.

    In short, all of the modules have a capacity to frustrate or provide a significant hurdle that requires some measure of stoicism or sheer bloody mindedness to overcome. However, the sense of reward is commensurately edifying when you do finally nail it.

    Because of this it is best to choose an airframe you already have some emotional investment in - something you have admired since child-hood, or have been seduced by the appearance or mystique of before you even discovered DCS, as this will tend to drive your motivation to overcome the challenges inherent to your chosen module.

    Choose a module that calls to you.

    I can't recommend a single module, because all of them are incredible on some level!
