  1. Although crypto-currency mining is undoubtably a thing, I think the bigger issue is that the countries where there are big markets for these components currently in lockdown so instead of spending cash on holidays, days out, airshows (cough) etc people are building/upgrading PCs and so stocks get tighter as a result. Scalpers also are a problem and there is evidence that some companies are supporting this trend (MSI were called out on it recently).

The shortage of memory in the wild has lessened over recent months as factories in the Far East have come back on stream. Certainly I had no issues purchasing a 32GB kit a month ago.

Each to their own Kev, but I think 2K is too much to spend on a graphics card when soon you'll be able to spend half that and get an overclocked 3080 and have change. I'm not sure that the extra cost for the 3090 is borne out by the performance gains. What is happening for definite is that manufacturers and suppliers are hiking the prices of the cards they have which does sound rather like profiteering to me.

Fortunately. in my case my antique 980 will give me 100+ FPS in GBS at 1080p with all the bells and whistles on so although an upgrade would certainly be nice, in the current insanity it's not really a necessary (or viable) course of action. In the meantime I have a big servicing bill coming up for the car and it'll need new boots before the summer so...

  2. Hey AOB, it's also worth ensuring that you have a button set up so you can feather the prop if you have an engine failure - leaving the prop windmilling causes a huge amount of drag so being able to feather the prop is important. Having made two single engine returns so far in this campaign I can vouch for this. I have set up two buttons so I can select either engine 1 or engine 2 plus a third button to feather/unfeather the selected engine.

  3. 3090, at the moment mate, you've no chance without risking a purchase from eBay, but I understand that there are lot of 2080s turning up in 3090 boxes that way.

There are likewise no 3080s but there are some (few) 3070s now being offered (scan.co.uk had about 8 different types of 3070 available yesterday - never mind, I just checked again and they've all gone)

3060's and 3060TIs are faring no better.

As Crash said, EU suppliers are your best bet as Brexit makes shipping out of the UK 'interesting' to say the least.

  4. PM sent AOB, any questions please let us know and someone will help you out.

Starter info pack you say...we used to have something like that during our '46 days but I never got around to updating it when we moved to GBS. I might revisit that one of these days but our usual somewhat chaotic approach to getting new fliers involved seems to work reasonably well.

Well I suppose that is one way of doing it 402nd....

The 485th prefer the “only half the squadron makes it back in one piece with a hop skip and jump finale terminating on the grass” method !
Also giving the ground crew audience value for money is important to us, making the landings last at least 10 minutes is always preferable.

Making it last 10 minutes is just self-indulgent.

  6. The 3070 is less capable than the 3080 for sure, but given what you're intending to use it for (i.e. VR rather than RTX), I think it would be OK. There are issues with supply of the new 30 series cards as well as the new 6800 series AMD GPUs, partly because the high value of bitcoin is driving a surge in mining, but also due to scalpers having bought up all the existing stock to resell on ebay at a huge markup. That said, there's nothing to stop you using your 960 in a new system until these supply issues are sorted and you can buy the one you want. The new Ryzen CPUs seem very, very good and generally outperform the equivalent intel processors in multithreaded applications which may not be so much of an issue for simmers. The improvement in the AMD stock has caused an increase in their prices so while they might still be a bit cheaper, it's not by as much as it used to be.

  7. Hey Chaz! You're very welcome here mate, any friend of Perf's is...well... you know. As I'm sure you are already aware, we're active in DCS and IL-2 Great Battles so hopefully we are already catering for the sims you fly!

I'll send you a PM with our TS server details and you'll be able to get started straight away. One key thing to let you know is that we never 'expect' people to attend, real life has a habit of getting in the way of playing games, so whenever you can make it we'll be happy to see you.

  8. I should say that's plenty Chris. Might be advisable to wait until the new 30 series nVidia cards are available though. Origin and Scan are also good and PCSpecialist are rated by some people (I have a record of spectacularly poor customer service from them but other Dogz seem happy so...)

    Available to chat if needed.
