I've got a redundant BU0836 - otherwise known as a Bodnar joystick emulator board. Only used a couple of times, normally retails at £20 (including postage). Anyone interested in making their own button bay? Make me an offer! Jabo

Thanks Mayhem, I tried these with no joy, so went and got a BU0836X and it works a treat! I guess having discrete signal and ground connectors for each switch is the reason. Got three switches wired up now so I can test with multiple 'on' conditions. All looks OK for now though. Your little circuit is spot on! Jabo

Not quite, the columns are working perfectly in game and in addition the rows are not strobing at a constant rate its more a random flicker. Jabo

Perhaps I should be looking at the BU0836X instead. That seems to have an individual ground for each switch. And it has 32 discrete inputs so no need for matrix wiring... Jabo

Where are the digital ground pins? I don't think I have any
