I would say 40% of the time I join with the wrong version still. HL is now littered with modded and non modded servers so you can't just leave it. If he has one install, it should still see the same Il2fb.exe, but just start the wrong version, if he's not using the switcher to ensure he is in the right version for the server at hand.
