Logos Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Hey Mates. I've been AWOL for awhile. I have been digging a lot of holes in search of lost treasure. I've found some pretty cool stuff since the end of April when I first started this sport of metal detecting. I am going to attempt to post some pics of some of my better finds. It's cold and the ground is starting to freeze up so I might be "grounded" from from swinging my tector for awhile. Looking forward to doing more flying now that I can't dig holes. JensenPark Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Cool Logos. Can you fill us in where those were found? Quote
Logos Posted December 6, 2008 Author Posted December 6, 2008 Thanks JP. I live in northern Illinois. Dixon, Illinois to be precise. Most of my finds come from within 50 miles from my home. There is a lot of old history along the Rock River area I hunt. My oldest coin, the 1853 3 cent Silver "trime" was recovered along the Rock River in a small park. Back around the 1830's 40's Abe Lincoln and several other soldiers were chasing a renegade Indian named Chief Black Hawk up and down the river. We have found some evidence from their being camped along the river banks. My MDing buddy found a round lead bullet from a mold. They must have had bullet making parties. I have found several globs of old lead. This is a great sport and it keeps me out of trouble, ie, bars. Thanks for your interest. I've got lot's of goodies and a few hundred bucks in modern clad coinage to clean up. Later. Kevin Quote
Dagger Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 What do you do with these? Sell them, keep them? Quote
Logos Posted December 7, 2008 Author Posted December 7, 2008 I'm a Pack Rat. I keep all my finds. The modern clad coinage that looks like crap when it comes out of the dirt will get cleaned in a tumbler and recirculated. I'm not sure what I will do with a lot of my old relic items. Some I may donate to local museums if they want them. The old coins and some jewelry I will keep until I die probably. I reckon if I start to get get a few nice rings and other good jewelry I might sell that stuff off to support the sport / hobby. I consider this a sport more than a hobby. It's a lot like hunting or fishing. You stalk your prey and you never know what you'll get until you lay eyes on it. Did you guys notice the Sterling Silver Aviator's Wings I found. They are WWII era I believe and I found them a few inches off a sidewalk. They are one of my favorite finds. Take care mates. Logos Quote
Blairgowrie Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 I have always been fascinated with this kind of hobby. Some of the stuff you have found looks quite valuable. That diamond ring for example and some of the old silver coins. Any idea of their worth? And could you post something on your "wand"? Make, model number etc. Quote
Enforcer57 Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 Impressive, especially the wings. What decoration is that? A DSC? I knew a guy who found an old Remington army .44 in a civil war trench system behind his house on his property. When I was a kid at Ft. Rucker, I used to find WW2 vintage shell casings in the ground all the time....I dug alot of holes. Quote
Logos Posted December 8, 2008 Author Posted December 8, 2008 This is my metal detecting arsenal. It's a Whites DFX 300. It's made in Sweet Home, Oregon USA and is one of the top companies in their technology and IMO the very best in customer service and standing behind their products. The DFX is a two frequency machine that uses computer software to determine what the target most likely is before you dig it. Of course it's not perfect but, it is very accurate on telling you what you can expect to recover. I've got three different types of coils for the machine. Small, medium, and large. They each have their niche in the various types of hunting I do. The small 4 X 6 inch coil works well in "trashy" areas with lots of targets close together. Quote
mctav Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Nice finds Logos Just bought my father a Garrett (cant remember model) detector for xmas from the family. Quote
Logos Posted December 8, 2008 Author Posted December 8, 2008 I can try. I am more familiar with Whites products than other manufacturers. There might be a forum sight he can access for Garrett brand detectors. I have learned most everything from the Whites Forum where folks post there finds and exchange information on the sport. I posted a link to the Garrett sight. I think this will get you to their forums. That will be his best bet on learning how to use his new "toy". Once you see what he starts recovering you'll be getting yourself a tector. I am quite partial to Whites myself. I own three of their machines now. One model for a backup or to loan to friends and another submersible metal detector for water detecting. Kevin. http://www.garrett.com/ Quote
mctav Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Thanks. He's a very hands on bloke but not so hot with anything electrical Quote
Logos Posted December 8, 2008 Author Posted December 8, 2008 Yo Mates. This post has some pics of the older coins I have dug. There's a few old token coins, foreign coins, Military Buttons / Medals, and other stuff mixed in as well. The three across the top are Canadian Pennies. I got one Mexican brass coin that was "holed" for a necklace. I loaded two picture sizes, 1024 x 768 & 1600 x 1200. Please let me know which one you prefer. The larger 1600 x 1200 may not fit on your monitor depending on your resolution settings. I love old coins. I think they are my favorite thing to recover. The Military items I recover I hold in respect and honor of the soldier that may have lost it. The few pieces of nice gold and silver jewelry are really cool too. BTW, the 1886 Morgan Silver Dollar was a reward for returning a ladies cell phone I found lying along the Rock River on the bank. The husband found it in Arizona while hunting for Indian artifacts. Kind of ironic and very cool. Thanks for viewing and let me know about the picture size if ya' old Dogz remember to. Logos Quote
