  5. Crash, I found the problem when I installed Saitek software and had profiles for both the previous X45 and the Saitek pedals and more recently the X52 and the Saitek pedals running at the same time. It wasn't just at startup, it was also when I activated them both before flying. Both pieces of kit had different programming software so I used them both along with their individual drivers. Things played up, ie. mouse moving itself and folders misbehaving on the desktop, so I removed the pedal programming software and just used it's driver. Problem solved, the driver allows it to work and I can set it up via the 'hotas' screen in game. There aren't many things I want my pedal set to do other than rudder and brakes so it isn't a problem. 6. From Wiki, V1s did fly with a person piloting: 'The first test flight of the V-1 was in late 1941 or early 1942 at Peenemünde.[6] A myth arose that early guidance and stabilisation problems were resolved by a daring test flight by Hanna Reitsch in a V-1 modified for manned operation. The myth entered popular consciousness from Reitsch's fictional exploits in the George Peppard film Operation Crossbow. Reitsch's first flights in the modified V-1 Fieseler Reichenberg were late in the war when she was asked to work out why test pilots were unable to land it and had died in landing attempts. Her discovery after simulated landing attempts at high altitude where there might be air space to recover, was that the craft had an extremely high stall speed and the previous pilots with little high speed experience had attempted their approaches much too slowly. Her recommendations of much higher landing speeds were then introduced in training new Reichenberg volunteer pilots. The Reichenbergs were air-launched rather than fired from the catapult ramp as erroneously portrayed in "Operation Crossbow".'
  7. It didn't want to play, so I removed the '_(film)' bit off the address - each time I copied the address and pasted it, the last curvy bit, close bracket/parantheses always appeared in black not blue. The reference to the film is at the end of the first paragraph. YW Dagger, saw it years ago but it stuck in mind, particularly the ending.
  8. Was it colour or black and white? 'Operation Crossbow' springs to mind http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Crossbow Cheerzen Sid
  9. Excellent photo mate, good to see you're getting some credit for it too!! Cheerzen Sid
  10. It's the noise, that engine.....coupled with the shape there is nothing so evocative
  11. I have no problems recommending 'pcspecialist' Friar as that is where I got this one from. They are a little slow in answering queries by email but a phone call is dealt with there and then. I found their price competitive and the components on offer reliable (in the last 18 months anyway). As to the spec that is another persons input.....
  12. Well well, some progress.. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1179158/War-hero-wins-battle-Trafalgar-Square--months.html Well done Dogz, obviously made a difference!!
  13. Thanks mctav, in my view your quote also sums it up for me. I am impressed, and grateful, that a couple of days ago when a rant couldn't be mustered due to the fact I'd already shrugged my shoulders in resignation to the views and attitudes of Westminster, the interpretation of my feelings was understood and confirmed in writing by all contributors both eloquently and forcefully. I am proud of my personal history and heritage, also my countries, and am extremely grateful to those of these islands and other nations that fought and are fighting still to preserve it. This heritage is inextricably linked with the fates of these other nations and I feel a bond that has been confirmed on this thread. I am particularly annoyed about the subject of this thread because it is very close to my heart. There is much debate and opinion over the Battle of Britain but what is fact is that it was a very significant period of history for these islands, especially for the South - East and the capital. I have been here http://www.aeroflight.co.uk/mus/uk/1-b/b_of_b_memorial.htm many times, I try to go every time I'm down that way, and each time I am moved by the serenity of the site but am also humbled by the magnitude of the effort of The Few. Looking across to France and up into the sky you can imagine the battle going on, the contrails snaking around the blue as the RAF attempted to stop the Luftwaffe coming across the Channel. The museum and memorial is very appropriate. It would have been a similar view over London. This memorial http://www.bbm.org.uk/ is within the city so let's not say that there has been nothing done to commemorate AND it is in Westmimster. However, it took a massive effort to get it built from public funds, which, by the way are also being used to keep it clean. Perhaps Westminster Council feel that this one permanent memorial is adequate? This is my point, that the interested and passionate public have to lobby and cajole to get anything meaningful and significant done at this present time. We should not have to be doing it to the extent that we do and this is one of many issues that add to my frustration with those in elected positions of responsibility that should be acknowledging these national heros on our behalf. There is nothing complicated in doing this, although it is plainly difficult due to the current thinking of those that obviously don't think outside of their compulsory box of modern ideas. ~S~ Sid
  14. Lost for words really, just seems to be another thing to shrug shoulders, sigh and walk away from....bunch of tw@ts http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1177570/Statue-Battle-Britain-hero-deemed-traditional-Trafalgar-Square-plinth.html If anyone deserves a permanent memorial, this hero does
  15. You're welcome. I enjoyed the scrap too...love it, irrespective of the outcome. Next time? Can't wait..... Cheerzen Sid
  16. I accept that these are good for my pooter, but yesterday I dropped these into my main IL2 folder. I haven't changed much regarding standard IL2 stuff for a while but gave these .dlls a go. They aren't the ones that install with the 4.09b stuff that the AAA universal installer puts in, they are a set put up as one of a few sets in early 2008 as an aim to decrease 'jaggies' on coastlines and rivers For me, with an Nvidia card, they give a crisper look to everything. Back up your 'il2_core.dll' and your 'il2_corep4.dll', found in your main IL2 folder, somewhere and drop these in. Hopefully, see a difference 022708_core_dll.txt

    Oh the pain...

You've seen the setup... In reality, there are three stages to setting up a stick like this. Firstly you need to work through the 'Control' settings in the game and assign keys to tasks - fun, but you will need an idea of what you want on keys. Secondly you set up the stick using the SST software based on the key settings you have done. Thirdly, spend too many hours tweaking it to satisfaction.... Sid
  18. Ahh....still nothing better than the Mk1 eyeball
  19. I know narrrthink about your mobo OT, but my Asus Extreme came with onboard 5.1 sound and a 5.1 Creative Soundblaster Audio Exteme card I had put in. I have tried both and come to the conclusion that the Creative card has better sound and more options for setting it up. I have disabled the onboard and have run with the card for months and have no intention of replacing it. If I do it will be with my backup Audigy 2 from out of my old rig........ As to the plugging in, I'm not sure it would - that would be for someone else. Another option is to plug the speakers (if you have some) into the card at the back and run Teamspeak from a set of USB headphones that plug into one of the available USB sockets on the front. This keeps game sounds and TS seperate and works fine and dandy once the correct selection has been made in the pooters sound setup. Cheerzen Sid
  20. I have installed Mech4 a couple of times but always get no further than the first mission. I like the visuals but i can't get on with the GUI or the pilots' controls and weapon selection - I really ought to give it more time. My lad had a copy of Mech2 but I have never been one for strategic games, I like to get up close and personal.... I am SOOO used to Mech 3 and love it's ease of use, simplicity in weapon selection and use and the campaign storyline. Perhaps with the limited time I have for games other than IL2 I am sticking doggedly to 3 because of familiarity rather than taking the time to move on and learn something new. I hadn't played it for a year or so because I got fed up with Windows XP and the 'bouncing' tanks syndrome. It didn't always do it but when it did and they stayed airborne I couldn't move on - hence the reason for getting 98. I don't recall what inspired me recently but I have always gone back to Mech 3. Have you tried it online? I did once many years ago but never went back.
  21. Lol, perhaps we ought to start a new thread dedicated to Mechs.... This installation on the 98 OS is the first time ever I felt the force feedback through the stick..great fun.
  22. Great stuff, thanks. I'll give Gimp a go.
