I like my setup with the CH Flightstick, but no matter what, I think the general consensus is right. If you really like flying, and plan to do a bit of it, its worth it to spend some on the hardware. I tried my old sidewinder a while back with IL2 and, Blechh!

Fine! Then I am taking a B-25 with unlimited parafrags and I am going to drop them over every, single square inch of that island from around 3000m until it looks like its freakin' snowing. HAH! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Quaz, Thanks for the help. I will try that when I am home, but I am pretty sure when I tried to put the same port number for more than one computer in the router, I got an error message warning me of overlap, and then it rejected the setup. However, I will try it again. As far as the LAN setup, no. All the PC's are hooked to the router itself. I may have to contact the company regarding this, as it seems the setup is generally good. I am wondering if there is some freaky setting on it which is keeping it from working. LOL! I thought I had it when I setup Port Triggering yesterday on a whim. I was able to connect over the internet, or so I thought. It turns out that even though I put the Internet IP in when I joined the game with my DELL, it actually was still connecting over the LAN. I had to turn off the cable modem to confirm this. Also, Roger, thanks again for the assist yesterday. BTW, regarding the sound issue I had earlier, the sound card the company sent me came, and after I installed it, TADAHH!, no hum no buzz, just sweet, sweet engine noise. The card is definitely not top of the line, but the sound is much better and I no longer hear the computer innards churning.

Okay, here is a breakdown of all the info I can think of: Router is a Netgear. Its IP is 192.168.0.1 The Dell is .2, the Toshiba .3, the new PC .4

I believe I did when I tried it, but I will go back over this from the ground up one more time. Ok, this brings up something else, as I ran across something on the PF boards. When you say the right address, do you mean the port number, or an actual address. On the PF boards someone else mentioned being able to select a number from a list rather than default, and I did not see what they were referring to. The only thing shown in my network tab is the "Connection" select box (ISDN, LAN, CABLE, etc.) the skin download check box, and the Port number entry box. One other thing, this computer has 3 network ports, two LAN type, and 1 IE type. Only one is hooked up, and I am sure I have the LAN in the right one, but would the other two still interfere?

Alright Gents, I tried my best to solve this on my own, but I am stumped at this point and chasing my tail. I am trying to setup the new PC for hosting duties, and I cannot get it show up on the internet, or at least I can't access it with my other PC over the internet, something I am able to do with my Dell. Joining it via lAN is no problem, but no joy through an internet connection. I forwarded the port 21000 through my router, copying what I had done with my Dell, but of course using the New PC's lan IP. I have made sure there is an exception in the firewall of the PC for Il2, and hell, I even turned OFF the firewall completely once to try that out. Nothing. Always timed out. I am using the same versions of the game. I deleted the DELL's listing in the router just in case there was a conflict, even though I had changed its port numbers. The New PC has a static address, and from what I have read and based on what the settings of my DELL were, everything SEEMS like it is setup correctly. Any suggestions are welcome, but for now, I have a few questions meant to eliminate things I could think of: 1) Does it matter if you lan IP's are contiguous? (they were not before, are now, no joy) 2) Does the fact that the New PC's IP is the last one in the LAN matter? 3) Does it matter if in IL2 Setup, the DELL is still listed as port 21000? 4) On my DELL, the DNS is listed as the same IP as my Router, which had worked. Should I switch the DNS on the new one to my internet IP? 5) Does it matter what TYPE of connection I set for the game, ie, LAN, DAL, CABLE, ISDN. I believe I tried them all, anyway, but thought I'd ask... For what it is worth, I am posting a grab of my router page. The 192.168.0.4 address IS the static IP I assigned the new PC on the LAN.

Hey Gents, Had an interesting conversation the other day at work, which in and of itself was astounding. I had this: On my desktop when one of the engineers, Michael, who works here commented on it Somehow we got into conversation where he mentioned his father had flown for the Romanians during WWII. Glenn's eyes light up. "The IR 80?" I ask. The guy was shocked and I think pleasantly surprised that I knew the plane (who says computer games don't teach you anything). "Yes, the IR80." We talked for a bit. I also managed to surprise him that I knew Ploesti was the location of the Romanian oil fields which were fought over so bitterly. What I did not know was that the Romanians had fought for both sides during the war. First for the Germans and then for the Russians when they came to town. Michael's father apparently started flying around the time the switch took place (September 1944?) in the IR80. His career did not last long as he had a run in with a group of 3 FW-190's which proceeded to shoot him down. He managed to crash land in a vineyard and sustained hip injuries which kept him out of the cockpit for the remainder of the war. His father is now 83, and alive and kicking (well, maybe not kicking, because the hip still bothers him). Michael said the IR was not a bad airplane for this time it appeared, but was underpowered. While under the sway of Germany, they tried to purchase better engines from them, but were denied. He also said that the IR80 tended to be confused by western allied pilots as a FW because of the similar shape. He also talked about what happened when the Russians came which was not as entertaining. Basically he said there are different kinds of bad, and the Germans were bad, and the Russians were worse. He said at one point his father was staying at a farmhouse near a field strip where he was operating, and he pretended to be the husband of the farmer's daughter by jumping into bed when the Russians came. Because he was an flight officer and by then flying for the Russians, they left her alone. Had they not... Its amazing what you find when you talk to people. I told him to wish his dad well and tell him I am glad he made it through the war.[/code]

Well, Kudos to Dazza and Waldo, because they both had some idea how to address the hum, although it is so bad that it was only a partial solution. Bottom line is that only by turning down the master desktop volume to 1 notch above 'low' was I able to mitigate the hum to non-aggravating levels. Unfortunately, it stayed at annoying levels because I knew it was there and could here it when there was noise (like engines) to cover it up. It also limited how loud I could make my sound for obvious reasons. Talking to the Tech support guy only pissed me off, because he tried to tell me the problem was in the speakers after I told him that I had tried more than one pair, and headphones. I tried reinstalling the motherboard drivers as he suggested, and it did not fix it. After firing off a PO'd email to Cyberpower, and threatening to return the thing, I actually got a rep to call me to address the issue. He offered to send me an audio card for free to install in order to solve the problem. I told him that as long as I got it soon, and it solved the issue, I would be happy with it. I appreciate the help, guys. Hopefully this will be resolved by the end of the week. Thanks.

Waldo, Thanks for the tip. I am going to try it now, but I may have a bigger issue. The hum is NOT just when it hooked up to the SS as it turns out. It appears on desktops speakers and even headphones. The reason I did not catch it is because it only appears when certain applications are running. While simply on the desktop, there is not noise. When I start media center, the hum appears. When I start IL2, the loading screen there is no noise, but once the game is loaded up, each of the various screens has the hum/buzz, each at a unique pitch. I jump back to the desktop, noise disappears at the same time. Does this still sound like crossover, or something else? Much obliged... Doubletap UPDATE: Actually, while trying to do what you suggested, I noticed something weird while wearing headphones. Whenever something new is graphically added to the screen, I hear it. For example, if I got to the start button, when the menu opens up, I hear a buzz in my ear for second. When help pop-ups appear, I hear a very short buzz, like a pip. While sliding the sound level controls, I hear them as a low, rippling buzz, up and down. Somehow the graphic signals are bleeding into the audio. That would explain the loud buzz from IL2 I guess.

Okay M8's, I've run into a little of a poser. Wonder if anyone can throw any illumination on it? My new PC sound card (I went with the onboard audio for now) supports surround sound. In fact, it has separate outputs for the center, side and rear and woofer speakers, which I have never encountered before. Now, I want to hoop the audio from the PC up to my surround sound system, but THAT only has a Left /Right input into it, and when I hook it up to any one of the outputs of the PC, I get sound, but also a distinct hum. Its not super loud, but its there. I do NOT get this hum when I hookup my laptop in the same exact way. When I hook up regular desktop speakers (powered) I also do not get this hum, and the 3D audio does work fine on them. So, the question is; why the hum on the SS system? Any ideas?

The monitor I was testing it out on is not the one I will be using, so I am not sure what the upper limit is. I will switch them out today. I assume I can get something at least above 1024x768, but if not, I now have something else to work toward getting. BTW, its only a 7800GT, although I understand the peformance difference is not overwhelming. And yes, my movies should increase in quality, or I am doing something wrong. I can't wait to install the editing software and see how it performs. Even if it only reduces the compression render time, it will help immensely...

Well, the new rig arrived yesterday, and so far, so good. I tried the memtest and could not access the webpage, and will try the 95 today, but the real important test seems to have worked: Installed Il2/PF, and ran the Black Death track at top graphics quality at 1024x768 and it was SMOOTH, baby! I also ran it over and over again, overnight, and when I got up this morning, it had not burst into flames nor seemed to have slowed down. The water effect are crazy; looks like glass. I obviously need to put it through some more paces, and get it set up for hosting, but looking good.

We did fly this mission, Gents, Thursday before last. I think I actually have part of a track of it. That's what you get for not reading the mission briefings. And after Bebop did all that work...
