  1. Ya know what? I like it! As a matter of fact...I was thinking of building a 1/3rd scale S.E.5a for R/C use.....I am leaning heavily toward using this paint scheme...I love it!!

    Thanks David. I appreciate it!

Looks good MT ... I realize these are generic skins but are you planning to offer some customized SE5a skins? If not perhaps you could provide some templates (and whatever font you're using) and we can throw our own together.

    Thanks,

    Joe

    Hey JoeBob,

The Template is in our vault. Here is the link for those that want to play with it and make their own: http://dangerdogz.co...5a-templaterar/

The Fonts that I have used are mentionned in a readme.txt file that is with the template file.

I will be making personnel ones for sure :)

    MT

Thanks MT, I'll take a look at it ... when I can break away for a bit.

Let us know when you plan to submit so we can get out mods in.

    HI JoeBob,

As you probably saw, the call sings version of the skin is already submitted for voting on the RoF web site. I don't know when we are going to submit the Presonnal SE5a skins yet. Since the next patch is probably going to be out soon, there is no real rush to submit them. So..when you have them done, just let me or Mayhem know so we can collect the skins and prepare a pack for submission. As for standradization of the SE5 Skin layout, I don't want to impose one so anything goes. We should however try to keep the roudels at the same place and maybe the white tail end with the checkered tail fin and the emplacement of the DD logos. I'dd like to know what you guys are thinking about that !!

Don't forget to read the included readme file with the template.

    Thanks.

    MT

Oh I agree completely MT, I think that, especially for the RFC and French birds, we should have a level of standardization or "theme" if you will.I think your suggestions are spot on. I, for example, will probably not use the red and blue markings around the nose but I'll probably add an Irish Harp someplace since I'm of Irish descent.

    {This space intentionally left blank for PropNut to make a comment equating "descent" with "shot down"}

I'd like to see a theme applied to the German aircraft as well, it really does add to game to have a flight of similar, but not identical skins. And as I mentioned it makes it easier to identify people in a fight. But the theme would still allow customization to be done.

  4. Great stuff 'Trooper. Thats perfect for me. Gets my vote :goodjob:

Thanks Arthur. Due to the lack of interest / responses, I'm thinking about quitting this project. We'll see what happens. I certainly wont submit something for the Squad, when the Squad did not agree on it.

    Thanks.

    MT

Oh I doubt that there's a lack of interest, it's just very tough to get something that everyone's going to agree on. Anyone who's ever attempted to make a skin knows how time consuming it can be and we all have our own ideas about what makes a good skin. That's especially difficult when you're trying to introduce a level of standardization that will hold true for all DD aircraft.

My recommendation would be to do what you've done, submit a skin for suggestions, take those you like and discard the ones you don't like and then offer whatever degree of customization that you think would be easy to do. Then submit it to ROF ... hell if someone doesn't like the skin ... they don't have to use it wink.gif

I personally appreciate the work you've done on these and would like to see some DD skins out there. If I can help in any way let me know.

  5. Cool...

Did you shoot down any AI or blow stuff up??

We did a co-op against the AI ... they had a "projection" display on a curved screen in front of you. We flew P51Ds against 109Gs and several different bomber types.

  6. I went to Minneapolis on business this week and was fortunate enough to be able to meet with Gustang while I was there. We went to the Mall of the Americas (right across the street from my hotel) one night and had a nice dinner, talked gaming ... complained about PropNut ... the usual.

Then we wandered over to a shop I'd seen the night before, A.C.E.S. - Flight Simulation. http://www.flyaces.com/index.html

Of course Gustang and I have played IL-2 and ROF for some time now and while I didn't expect this to be up to military standards I thought it might be fun to give it a whirl as long as we were there. We paid the fees and they sent us to the back to the "Briefing Room" where we were treated to such enlightening gems as "90% of the flight control is with the Flight Stick, or stick for short. Grasp the stick with your right hand."

Having absorbed that bit of wisdom it went on to discuss the use of rudders to control something called "yaw" and "coordinated turns" ... I began to get a bit worried at that point.

Nonetheless we were ushered to the cockpits ...

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/40394335@N08/6244789868/

Climbed in and put on the headsets ... yes, they had comms too.

They fired it up and it was not, let me make this clear, like IL2 ... It WAS IL2 ... exactly IL2 with ID tags and everything. Well not quite everything, there was no Track IR so we both had to relearn old habits and use the hat switch.

But hey, it was fun anyway and while I'm on the road on business I don't get a chance to fly sims very often ... like at all ... so it was all good.

And I got to meet Tim (Gustang) in real life and that's always nice ... as was Tim, a great guy.

  7. Personally, I think it's too busy for a generic skin, but it's great work (as always)! I really like the checkers on the tail, but not so much on the cowling, not sure why. I like the white tail too, with the white extending along the fuselage, but again not so much on the cowling. Not sure on the bird's (cardinal?) head either, maybe that that space could be reserved for individual designs/monikers. The "DD" lettering reminds we more of WWII than WWI, perhaps it's too big, I dunno, but I do like where they're placed. Perhaps try the simple lettering much like is found on the historical skins?

I agree Gus ... I personally, and it's just a personal preference, like the skins to be more historical in nature. As a general rule the RFC aircraft weren't as heavily customized as the German aircraft were and I prefer that. I also agree with your comments about location of the white paint on the fuselage and the checkering and I don't like the cardinal's head ... again that's just me and certainly not a reflection on the fine work MT did on the skin.

I do like the idea of the lettering on the top wing, it can help in getting the flights organized and keep wingmen together. In addition it's nice to know who you're looking at if/when you get shot down and are spectating. I'm not particularly worried about the size or the font.

  8. HI JoeBob,

Actually what I do need is your .Psd file. Its the photosop document. The template of the DR1 that you are working on. There is nothing I can do with .dds file.

    Thanks.

Okay, I've sent a link to my psd file in a PM to you ... big damned thing though.

    Thanks for looking at it,

    Joe

    Hey Joebob,

I looked at your skin and once I have flatten the image I have adjusted the brightness to -40 and saved it as a .DDS file then flew it in the mid day sun at 5000M and everything looked good to me. What they are really looking for is if some areas of your aircraft are shining like a bright star and if it does its non good. Your look fine.

Great skin by the way. You did a very good job. So if you want to do some last changes before submission let me know and if not then I can submit it for you but I would need your real name along with your e-mail address (this info is needed in the skin txt file). I would submit it with mine soon.

    MT

Very good, thanks a bunch MT. I'll PM the name and email.

  9. b,b,but... screw individuality!... I want a skin like that! :D

But seriously, would switching up the foundation colors be hard to do (I really don't know)? I'd think that would be enough to give each a unique look.

Yet again, MT, that's truly amazing work. Your Spad VIIs are way too cool also.

And here's another question MT ... I have a Dr1 skin that I did and rather like but I have no idea if it meets the requirements of Neoqb for the skins. If I send that over to you would you be able to EASILY (I don't want to dump any massive amount of work on you) check it for compliance and then submit it with yours? Failing that perhaps we could meet up on TS someday and you could help me figure out what I need to do. Frankly reading through the requirements that Neoqb put out was a little daunting.

I can't match your artistry of course but I like it ...

HI Joebob, sorry I was away on a business trip this week and I just got back home. Yes most definately, I can check it out for you. What I will check for are the areas that are shining like a bright star. They dont accept that so it will probably take some contrats and brightness adjustment. If you could host your photoshop document (skin template) on a free hosting web site and send me a link I'll be happy to check it out for you.

    Thanks.

    Mt

Thanks MT, no problem, believe me if anyone knows about being out of town on business, I do.

Sounds good to me, I'll try to get it up on a file sharing site today and I'll shoot you a PM to let you know it's up.

I presume a zip of the .dds file would be acceptable? Zipped it's about 1.7 Meg. And please don't hesitate to make any recommendations or suggestions, this isn't my very first skin but it's close and improvement is always a good thing.

Is there any standardized rule for the use of and placement of the DD logo? I agree with PropNut that more individuality on the German aircraft is probably a good thing, but as a squadron we probably want some standardization.

  11. Yep, 'normal' for a given value of 'normal'

And let's keep in mind that we're talking about people who wear baseball caps with goofy reflectors on the brim and/or headsets with reflectors on one side of their head ... a look that prompted one wife to refer to her husband as looking like "a half retarded reindeer." My daughter burst out laughing the first time she saw me in my Track IR gear.

And our comments during the flights can't help ... "Damnit, someone get him off my butt!"

    Joe

  12. No!! This will be bad!! If he joins the sheep will lose their wool (ahead of sheering time) they will dry up and give no milk!! A plague will be on the land! Pestilence will stalk the people and all will lament! Lament I TELL you! Lament!! We are all dooooomed! (welcome to the pound Joebob)

    BWAHAHAHAHA!

    Joe

  13. Well WH_Joebob, I would be happy to post upcoming events on your group's forum but as we both know...access to that venue is reserved for those who are found to be....worthy of the honor.

And we all know that you are incapable of framing, I don't know ... an EMAIL?

    WH_JoeBob

WH_Joebob, WH_Joeboob, WH_JoeBooB...you do not frame an Email, you compose an email. You frame a picture, or an opponent not an email. But yes, I will graciously "Frame" an email to you the next time we are going to fly RoF.

(for those of you who have not realized it yet...WH_Joebob and I have been friends for some time and this is common banter when we are together)

Well YOU'RE about as common as it gets I'll give you that.
